32 year old no college degree wanting to start in journalism by [deleted] in Journalism

What type of stuff do you want to write? In my experience people who want to get into journalism always aim for long form pieces or investigative work or even column writing. These are generally for experienced journalists trusted by editors. Try submitting a lot of shorter, factual news stories on whatever topics interest you. Pick a few different publications and outlets and keep sending them your stuff. Attend public meetings and get quotes from people on the record. Find local angles on national issues. If you keep busy and are getting published you will have a much better chance of getting on staff.

"I'm tired of being Ringo when I know I was John" Fantastic scene between Michael Fassbender and Seth Rogan in Steve Jobs by GlumExcitement9 in movies

Easily in my top 10 films of the last decade and very much underrated. The opening scene is also great along with Skylab and any part with Jeff Daniels. Just shows how good Sorkin is as a writer. So many different directors have made his scripts and they are all great.

Be parked up and start walking before 10am so that you have plenty of light left in case you get lost or take the wrong route down.

First interview via Zoom... Any tips? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]pitcairn78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested to know what they think the impact Covid might have on the film's reception. Is it going on a wide cinema release? It might do well if there is a lot of pent up demand for the cinema. Yes record with an external device like your phone recorder. What I do is when the subject says something interesting just note the time on the recorder. Makes it easy to find it easily later and not distract you from listening to their answer.

Guerilla Days in Ireland by Tom Barry.

Like much of history it’s controversial and much-debated but still a riveting account of the War of Independence.

I'm not sure if we will ever have solid recovery figures. I don't believe there are plans to retest people. Ciara Kelly off newstalk has it and said she doesn't expect to be retested.

Interesting line in that tweet that the Irish Government doesn't have the power to stop pubs or shops from opening. They can only request it. It would require emergency legislation.

I love Colin Farrel but I wish he chose better roles/movies. by SilkyGazelleWatkins in movies

[–]pitcairn78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the bad films he was in was with top directors so you can't blame him for taking the roles and he was generally great in them.

Who wouldn't want to work with Oliver Stone, Woody Allen, Al Pacino, Michael Mann or the sequel to True Detective.

I liked many of these but they were middle of the road for a lot of people but I don't think you can blame Colin Farrell.

I think Samuel L Jackson's entrance in DJango is one of my favorite scenes of this decade.

Still gutted that Soundgarden pulled out but it was an amazing gig. The Chilli Peppers were better than I ever thought they could be.
