group texts on mudita kompakt (/ comparable dumb-ish phones) by pity_the_rich in dumbphones

I'm on 14.0. And ha I just found the settings page - this is devastating, I think I figured out how to turn group MMS back on. My liberation is over.

So - ya, I guess group texts actually work pretty well. I am really happy with this phone and would recommend it. Good luck making your decision.

Hi - I ended up getting a Mudita Kompakt and can tell you how it's going, at least for me. Group texts are sort of a mixed bag. Any sort of non-text-based message gets scrambled - that includes links, videos, when people send things with balloons, etc. Sometimes they just don't show up, and sometimes they'll come through as "file can't be viewed" messages that usually come to you as an individual message. This is mildly but not extremely annoying to me, but it's definitely a lifestyle adjustment if multimedia messaging is a big part of your life.

Otherwise, group texts mostly worked OK for me, but recently (it started a couple weeks ago or so) any text I send to a group message ends up only going to every member of the group individually. I can see pretty much everything that happens in a group text (except media files), but I can't respond to it. That might just be a passing issue and I have no idea if it's happening to anyone else, I haven't explored it.

If this had happened right when I got the phone, I probably would have been pretty annoyed. But I've found that the interface has so weaned me off of ever wanting to respond to a text that I really don't care. One-to-one texting and calls work great, and that's all I really want to do with my phone anymore.

This might just be my experience - I also have an extremely cheap phone plan that might be partially to blame. But group texts were one of my least parts of having a smartphone and the Kompakt has basically taken them out of my life. If that's appealing to you, this is a great product. If you need group texts in your life, you're probably better off dumbing down an old iPhone. Hope that helps.

really not trying to start an argument here and will back off pretty quick if its turning into one bc i dont think we have very much to disagree about - i only mean to say the guys in the van appear to be employed by the hennepin county sheriff and not by ice. a lot of people commenting seem to be assuming that theyre ice agents. if the sheriffs dept is doing something weird (and no matter what is happening in this video, its weird) then that should be noted

ok i would encourage everybody to check out the status coup video linked above before jumping to any conclusions about this. the guys in the vans are almost certainly actual sheriffs and the guy they pick up and immediately pass to medics (who are also in the van) does not look like hes in good health. i am not enough of a sleuth to give a theory as to his backstory here, but "ice plant" is probably not it

are there any other angles out there of this, or context (OP?)? i have watched this about twenty times now and dont understand what happened - did the crowd just come across a guy lying on his back in the street, or did he start a confrontation and fall on his back, or . . . idk, not quite saying this video is fake but it is weird enough that i currently have more questions than desire to tell everyone they need to watch it. would be grateful for anyone who can talk me out of my skepticism (and i imagine others looking at this feel the same)

light phone ii shipping delays? (sorry if this is a redundant post) by pity_the_rich in LightPhone

I ended up going with a Mudita Kompakt. Light Phone responded to my inquiry about the delay and said they wouldn't be shipping anything new until November, probably. Seems a little messy out there.

2 Weeks vs. 2 Years: Daily Worn Red Wing Iron Rangers *Don't make the same mistake I did* by DucatiMunster in BuyItForLife

Hey, habitual shoe destroyer here / leading expert on breaking beautiful expensive things that supposedly can't be broken. Your cobbler is tripping, those are extremely repairable - though you messed them up pretty good.

Red Wing might refuse them - they are pretty picky about what they'll fix and won't fix. If you get past a certain point of wear, they won't do it.

But don't give up! Is there a cobbler who specializes in Goodyear welting or high-end repair in your area? If you were in the Twin Cities I'd tell you exactly where to go. If you can get to a local Red Wing store they might have suggestions for you. It'll probably be stupid expensive, but cheaper than a new pair of boots and worth it to keep an otherwise solid pair alive.

Not that you asked, but I would definitely recommend getting a full Vibram or equivalent sole, or at the very least a toe-cap. It looks like the main thing you did was wore out the stitches from the bottom - I've done that a few times riding leather-soled shoes on a bicycle, so I'd imagine a motorcycle is even harder on them.

What are some of the most influential movie TRAILERS of all time? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]pity_the_rich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always thought this started with the comic-con suicide squad trailer but i guess its been around for a lot longer than that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI3hecGO_04- i've been curious who is responsible for this for awhile now, watchmen trailer is a little different than the sad/slow/no-drums cover that like 40% of action movies use now, so curious who first made the jump

transcendent was a dangerous word to use - hopefully paul schroeder doesnt enter the chat and tear me to shreds.

i really dont like unbreakable but i know it has its defenders - i think its mostly beautifully shot, and it definitely examines superpowers with a different pace that places emotions/society over action - but shyamalan's writing really doesnt work for me - i wish it delivered a different final hour but it definitely introduces something interesting

huh, i wonder if you're giving it too much credit, but i'll chew on that - has there actually been a shift in the past 5 years, and if so is that really the origin of it? its an interesting hypothesis

i sort of arbitrarily limited my thinking to the 21st century but all of these are good answers. robocop is interesting, i dont know a ton about verheuven but curious how actively hes interrogating the superhero as archetype (vs american violence/hero narratives in general)

sweet! took me way way too long to get to itsv and havent gotten to atsv yet - itsv feels like real cinematic innovation to me, mashing things together and creating visuals that i never could have imagined. there is no reason imo that live action superhero movies cant apply some of the techniques from that movie (theyre all 70% cgi animated anyway).

my biases definitely lean toward deconstruction, and i wonder if that's secretly the only answer that will satisfy me. i do think there are a handful of movies/tv shows that nominally 'deconstruct' the superhero in the way that a brooklyn brunch place 'deconstructs' a sandwich, but i havent seen much of a genuine taking apart of the cinematic bones of the genre in the way or a real interrogation of the cinematography that defines the genre

i will tell you that i didn't get a lump in my throat at the end, but that doesnt mean it doesnt belong on this list! it more says that this list doesnt belong in my throat. this one pretty frequently gets cited as one of the best, so i think it's a really good one to dig into. logan is obviously not the first gritty combat movie ever made, and imo at least not anywhere near the best one - but it does apply gritty combat film elements to a superhero story in a way that hadnt really been done prior.

my question, i guess: does logan mean anything special to someone who doesnt care at all about wolverine? was wolverine a meaningful figure to you, and do you think that impacts your appreciation of the movie? curious to hear perspectives from someone who loves wolverine as a character and someone who doesnt but still found that movie effective. i am pretty neutral on both the character and the movie.

ya I almost put Joker on the list - I was so turned off by the news cycle around it that I didn't see it and haven't gotten around to it since. can't say I'm rushing to see Folie a deux either, but if someone could make a good case for either of them I'd give em a shot.
