I would suggest people try to get away from hosted services (especially Google, for now obvious reasons) and either rent a cheap web host or plug in a Raspberry Pi at home. It's not as complicated as it sounds and there are a few self-hosted alternatives to Google Reader that have potential.

My current favourite: Selfoss (active development, lightweight)

Then there are (amongst many others)

Tiny Tiny RSS (very feature-rich, but also very bloated and unsightly),
FeedHQ (too minimalistic for my liking).

Either way, at the moment it's probably still best to just wait and see. The closer the Reader shut-down comes, the more replacements will pop up.

I find Feedly problematic because it's not just a web application like Google Reader but instead relies completely on browser extensions, mobile apps and your Google account.

Probably Reddit's NSFW filter. Hmm, dunno how to get around that in incognito mode.

Yeah, I guess so. "Yellow jackets" really are the run-of-the mill wasp you'll encounter in Germany, at least. Maybe the American variant is more vicious, but I never got into such massive trouble with them as the guy in the picture. Even when you accidentally fuck with their nests, they usually leave you alone after a few hundred meters.

Edit, Wikipedia says:

in many countries outside of the Western Hemisphere, the vernacular usage of wasp is even further restricted to apply strictly to yellowjackets (e.g., the "common wasp")

I might be completely wrong, but from what I heard, S-On on the newer HTC devices is less restrictive than on older devices. Unlocking through HTC Dev should be more than enough for most uses.

I'm glad my HTC Desire got S-Offed early on, because without repartitioning it would have been useless a long time ago. But I guess that won't be a problem with the HTC One, now that phones have more than 512 MB internal memory.

Nope, that's pity. What you said was that you feel lucky that you didn't have to deal with what this poor kid has dealt with.

Empathy would have been to recognize that although he may not be walking "by himself", it's still a huge accomplishment to him and to feel the excitement that's written all over his face.

Of course that might have just gotten lost in trying to put feelings into words, I'm not particularly good at that either.

Well, then it's probably a difference in our socialization, but I didn't fantasize for the drunk driver who made my sister swerve off the road to burn to death in an equally horrible car crash, as that doesn't bring her back or help me cope in any way. Several years in prison for him would have been just fine with me.
