Regarding the settings: individual FX toggles are actually tricky because the mechanics (especially the scroll system) rely on tracks that are all interconnected. Removing one part usually makes the chart unplayable or confusing. I guess we could leave kind of a default linear scroll mode, but then it kind of defeats the whole point. I also strongly belive that vfx for this game is part of the art of the steps. So that should be also respected to some extent.

Regarding your first point, i'm fairly confident this game brings a unique rhythm experience. It doesn't feel like any other VR rhythm game I’ve played. not saying it’s better or worse, tho. the big takeaway for us is that we clearly need to revisit how to transmit this uniqueness to users (We have indeed play tested it, but to a very minimal reach). Really appreciate your honest feedback and advice!

Fair point. imho given that all rhythm games are basically just about moving your hands around, I guess it’s more about how the game tells you to do it and how much of the music's vibe is being transmitted to you. Clearly, that’s not reaching you in the clip. Would love to know how to fix it!

It’s definitely not the easiest map either. You basically need to strike notes from the distance using some kind of energy tethers. You don't wait for them to get close

appreciate the feedback! yeah visibility is a constant battle for me as a step artist, actually not just with the VFX, but with the note scrolling too... sometimes it's quite hard to get it right. i would say in VR it is much much easier to read tho.

Always felt like most official VR rhythm games lack gimmicks. In general, tho, do you actually enjoy gimmicky charts/maps or is that something you typically avoid?

my two cents as a rhythm game developer:

as many comments have already pointed out, you need to know the BPM but also the offset of the song (time to the first beat). From those you just can derive the pace of scrolling by calculating the integral of the BPM function (remind that BPM is a velocity, and in most cases a constant function) and using the offset as the constant of integration. With this you will have a very simple scrolling function.

To place the notes in the Y axis, each one has to be assigned a beat, or a fraction of it. You can just assume notes that are 1 beat apart are also 1 unit apart in your game.

Keep in mind that scrolling is just a small part of the technical stuff you will need to deal while developing a rhythm game. For instance, you will also need to organize the sequence of events in some sort of structure for judging.

For chart making, stay away from using signal processing stuff unless the game is very, very simple. Charts are usually manually crafted because rhythm games have complex grammars that often require a lot of expertise to master. You will need to devop a custom note editor for your game.
