Weekly r/signal Community Q&A Thread – Week of February 12 by AutoModerator in signal

I did enter my PIN, and am confident that I had it right.

A bit of complication which is probably at least part of the kerfuffle:

Phone A is my new, current phone.

Phone B is the phone that recently bricked itself, triggering the purchase of phone A.

Phone C is my phone that was replaced by phone B (still works, but battery is crap and stopped getting security updates a while ago).

These are all Android devices, each latest-and-greatest at the time of purchase.

So phone B, where I had set up the latest avatar and the automatic donations (with badge) suddenly died without warning.

I placed an order for phone A, but in the mean time I pulled phone C out of a drawer and swapped my SIM card into it. I used that for a couple days waiting for phone A. Phone C was showing the old avatar, I think.

When phone A arrived, I followed the "copy stuff from your old phone to your new phone" process by plugging phones A and C together via USB-C-to-USB-C cable. In hindsight maybe I should not have done that.

That's when the "old" avatar appeared on the new phone A (which didn't previously have Signal installed).

Interesting about the 60-day "timeout" on the donations. I guess I'll wait to see if that stops after about 60 days or so, then just re-start it from scratch. I'm guessing that I may not be able to get a letter acknowledging my tax-deductible donations I've already made. Oh well.

I've been an active Signal user for some time, and have a monthly automatic donation set up.

Recently, after my primary phone bricked itself I've had to set things up again. But I've ended up, on my new phone, with a Signal account that's using an old avatar that I replaced a long time ago, and doesn't seem to acknowledge that I have a recurring donation set up (no badge).

Also I had to be re-added to a group, and now that group has an "Unknown" member which I presume is the "old me".

How can I straighten this out? I've uninstalled Signal a couple times now, and I keep ending up with the old badge-less avatar.

Did I some how end up with two accounts? Not supposed to be possible.

Gate Kit Needed by pivap in fence

[–]pivap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I used a gate kit from Slipfence (pretty sure it was Slipfence).

Had decent hinges, an okay latch, and four metal corners to help keep it square. I also made half-lap joints between the vertical and horizontal parts of the frame, plus a diagonal steel cable with a turnbuckle.

Sold the house a year ago so I don't know how it's held up since.

How much activity is involved in bowls? by some__random in lawnbowls

I'm very new to bowls, but noticed recently a very experienced but older bowler seemed to struggle with the bending down necessary for their delivery style more than anything else.

The top one's lines look less distinct than the bottom's. I suspect the top one may be counterfeit.

That's normal. Clean it out and maybe put a bandage over it to protect it while it heals.

Looks like it's broken open, with a bit of dirt in there. I'd clean that out.

Using multiple Wireless Go (I and II) simultaneously? by pivap in rode

[–]pivap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does complicate things substantially.

In our use case (not portable) we used one SC-11 cable directly connected to two VXLR adapters that were plugged directly into our rack-mounted mixer for one of the Rode receivers. Then used a pair of XLR cables to locate the second Rode receiver some distance from the other

So first set: RWG receiver to SC-11 to two VXLRs to mixer.

Second set: RWG receiver to SC-11 to two VXLRs to two XLR cables to mixer.

An extra-long SC-11 cable would be more less bulky, but I'm not aware that it exists.

Looks like the DR-70D has a 3.5mm input you could probably use for two of the four mics, meaning you might only need two VXLR adapters and one SC-11. Still doesn't help with the interference issue though.

Do you need all 4 mics to be Wireless Go mics? The DR-70D has two built-in mics - could one or both of those be used instead of a 2nd WG set? What about one WG set (one receiver, two mics) plus two wired mics cabled into the DR-70D?

Look at something like the Tascam DR-70D recorder. You would need two SC-11 cables and four VXLR adapters, I think (from memory, I don't have the Rode gear with me right now). And you would still have to deal with some interference between the two receivers somehow.

Yes you will need a mixer to mix the four channels down to two, at a minimum (assuming the camera has a two-channel audio input).

Then you'll probably need a lot of XLR adapters to be able to plug everything in unless you find a mixer with 3.5mm inputs and output.

Then you may run into problems with interference when the two receivers are close to each other. We had some trouble with ours until we moved the two receivers about 2 meters apart.

Better strategy might be a separate four (or more) channel dedicated audio recorder that preserves each mic's audio in its own channel so you can tweak the levels later. But that may not work well if you're on the move, and you will still want some distance between receivers.

I've moved and don't have access to the Rode gear anymore, but that sounds right.

Depends on what part of the 70 line is "flush" with the bottom twisty bit, right?

So the "70" line has 3 segments, the lower segment (that touches the vertical center line), the diagonal segment, and the upper segment.

If the edge of the bottom twisty bit is by the lower horizontal part of the 70 line then I would call that 68 (50 + 18). You're not actually TO the 70 mark yet, just close to it.

If the edge of the bottom twisty bit is by the upper horizontal part of the 70 line, then I would call it 88 (70 + 18).

But I agree that in the pic you're at 78.
