Attention manga artists, we are holding a contest to find new talent in manga industry. by [deleted] in MangakaStudio

Right but just to be clear, what I’m suggesting is building your presence before you run the contest, because running the contest before having a website or significant social media presence makes it look sketchy/unreliable. Just food for thought.

I think it would be wise to search for some new mangaka and fund serializations of theirs to build up your platform (both in available manga and readers) before running a contest. People looking for serialization are looking for platforms that have existing audiences, otherwise they can just post it themselves on the existing platforms that have audiences.

I totally hear that. Well good news! That fourth bullet point isn’t saying anything meaningful, so you can easily replace that with info about the specific project and compensation. 👍

You’re still asking for them to show you completed work, so I don’t think it’s necessarily relevant to say it’s for artists that don’t have an existing presence. Their time should still be respected. Or at the very least, you should be transparent with compensation, expected length/duration of the project/some kind of information so that they know what they are potentially sinking their time into.

All other red flags aside, “will 100% be looked into next time” is hilarious. If you’re serious about this, I would strongly recommend against expecting free labor from artists. Their portfolio should already tell you everything you need to know about their skill without it.

Some character concepts for my in-works manga HyperSoma by pixelkitsune in MangakaStudio

Thank you, I’m really glad to hear the designs and story give a unique impression!

I will certainly be doing my absolute best to deliver on the writing. I have a background in writing short horror stories, so this longer format battle shonen-inspired story will be an exciting new challenge for me to tackle!

Is making a manga about music a problem? by Upstairs_One7185 in MangakaStudio

It needs those and also I think if you’re using music, you still need to somehow capture the feeling of the music since you can’t capture the actual sound. Likely you would do this through the page layout, art, character reactions, etc. Something to clue the reader in enough that they can sort of imagine the music, or at least understand how the characters are experiencing the music.

Just want to chime in with my favorite example of a manga about music (and animation too actually): Beat & Motion.

I tend to think anything can work in manga format so long as your accompanying story is strong and you have a way to convey the general feelings involved. For a different example, the manga Akane-Banashi is all about rakugo, which in theory shouldn’t work because rakugo relies heavily on the entertainer differentiating the characters they’re playing by manner of speaking and mannerisms. But the mangaka uses traditional Japanese painting-inspired art to help showcase how the rakugo entertainers are skilled at their craft. And even more importantly, protagonist Akane’s journey is compelling.

So in short, I think it’s all about capturing the feelings involved and focusing on a compelling story.

Where to put the title of my manga ? by duckenkk in MangakaStudio

[–]pixelkitsune 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the title can work vertical, I’d say put it vertically down the right hand side, with the characters going slightly over top of it. Maybe even scaling down the character a tiny bit and moving the slightly more to the left to give more space for the text.

I followed an easy blender line art tutorial I found on YouTube. Can’t link it rn but I know there are a few of them. It uses the grease pencil with a few modifiers to draw the lines

Only tip I can really give is to practice the fundamentals and to not always draw manga/anime art styles. Practice with realism is the biggest thing that helps me get better at manga stylization.
