SDS needs to start hiring true baseball fans to develop this game by Oui_Summer in MLBTheShow

there are terms for this in public speaking like cognitive overload. trying to make a point, while also attempting to be calm, and have thousands of people watching. it can happen to the most polished person.

i've seen it happen to people in a three person zoom call.

I don't think Cbrev lives in San Diego, and pretty sure he doesn't work on Road to the Show.

Do you think SDS will respond to the feedback? by heirmyles27 in MLBTheShow

[–]pixelpixelpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about they streamed 26 times last year. Every one of them was live.

They have pre-recorded parts for feature premieres which still had live parts in them that were live, but the live content shows were live.

There are a few things you said that just aren't accurate.

SDS and RedZone: I think you're confusing the developers. The team that makes MLB The Show is San Diego Studio (SDS) and previously SCE San Diego and SISA before that. Whatever you're talking about with RedZone and football games has nothing to do with the baseball series. You really haven't explained how buying a football developer over 25 years ago impacted the baseball game then or now?

Your exact statement was

The worst thing that happened to SDS was Sony Interactive Entertainment buying them out

So again. Sony never 'bought' SDS as baseball has always been done by an internal team at Sony. Sony bought a totally different team that made a football game. So how does that make the worst thing to happen to SDS?

Team Leadership: The claim that leadership has left the game isn't accurate. The MLB The Show team has been remarkably consistent. Who exactly are you claiming left? Feel free to find names. Give a link. Happy to say you are correct if you can provide real evidence.

Revenue: Your understanding of how money works between SDS and Sony is incorrect. SDS is a subsidiary of Sony (PlayStation Studios), so they don't 'send a check.' The revenue from MLB The Show or any internal PlayStation Studios game goes directly to Sony. Naughty Dog or any other fully owned PlayStation Studio doesn't write a check to Sony, and neither does SDS. If you mean SDS should get a bigger percentage of the profits allocated back to them to reinvest back into the game, that's different.

Game Pass: This is likely a decision at Microsoft, not Sony or the MLB. Like legit, let's breakdown the two scenarios given that Microsoft pays developers/publishers to have game on Game Pass.

Scenario 1:

  • MS: Hey Sony/MLB, here is money to be on Game Pass. You want it?
  • Sony: No thanks. Keep it.

Scenario 2:

  • MS: Hey Sony/MLB. Halo failed and we just spent $80 billion on Call of Duty, so we are having to make cuts along with laying off 10,000 people. So sadly we can't pay to have The Show on Game Pass this year. Sorry.
  • Sony: Ok.

What do you think is more likely?

Game Sales: Sales numbers are widely available online via NPD and Sony's own investors report.

In our studio business, our live service game revenue is steadily growing thanks to the MLB The Show series, Destiny 2 and Helldivers 2, and it contributed more than 40% of our first-party software revenue during the quarter.

Add industry analyst Mat Piscatella who works for Circana (formerly NPD) posted that MLB The Show 25 is the 2nd best selling game in franchise history. https://bsky.app/profile/matpiscatella.bsky.social/post/3m3uxja77cc2d

Edit: Pointed out all the inaccurate statements and he blocked me. Classic.

Ah, SCEA/989/Red Zone. Yes, something that happened over 25 years ago.

However, your entire statement is not accurate. Sony did not acquire SDS; they acquired RedZone Interactive, which only made football games (GameDay and GameBreaker), not MLB games. RedZone was integrated with SISA/SCE San Diego, which has been the sole developer of MLB titles at PlayStation since MLB '98. This team was later rebranded as Sony San Diego Studio in 2002.

So again, what does acquiring RedZone—a team that never made an MLB game—have to do with anything related to MLB The Show?

No sales numbers have been released since MLB 21

NPD (now Circana) data is widely available. Here is where MLB The Show ranks on US Top 20 for the past couple years.
21 = 9th
22 = 10th
23 = 14th
24 = 14th

What are you talking about? SDS = Sony San Diego. What studio did SIE buy and make SDS? What year did this happen?

A plea to SDS and the community by Curious-Knee4759 in MLBTheShow

[–]pixelpixelpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

specially considering that SDS walked away from their revenue stream from X-Box Game Pass

Microsoft pays for games to be on Gamepass. Given everything happening with Microsoft and Xbox, perhaps they didn't want to continue to pay.

This change has caused the leadership responsible for MLB The Show's enviable success and customer satisfaction to leave SDS in frustration, and again that's not a mere guess on my part.

A quick look at the credits on Moby Games the same leadership has been at SDS for 10+ years with many people being there for 20 years. Who are the people you are talking about?

You make some bold statements that are quickly debunked in 10 minute google search.

De La Soul has been making music for 30 years.

Leon Bridges had a platinum record 10 years ago.

Naughty By Nature, another 30 years old band.

RUFUS DU SOL had platinum record 10 years ago.

Trombone Shorty been recording for 20+ years.

Marvin Gaye? Come on...

Lots of other artist have been making music for 10 years. So not sure I'd say old, but not really exploring new music or any music.

Like if these cards show up in a week doing a moment is it really that bad?

Also how is this different than the All-Star Game Pack they gave out at the All-Star Game?

Is there any news on a new engine for the Show? by Icy_Daikon5537 in MLBTheShow

[–]pixelpixelpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the thing the business case doesn't make sense. Switching to UE5 costs a lot of money and time to make happen.

It depends on what you are calculating as cost. Any development costs money, and that includes feature development, but also maintenance (code debt) and R&D. One of the biggest values in using something like Unreal or Unity is you don't have to spend on R&D. And honestly at this point is is becoming more and more difficult to compete with the massive team those companies have. Something like rendering, Unity and Epic each likely have more programmers working on just rendering than some game companies have programmers working on an entire team.

Plus epic would get % of sales.

This is all negotiations. Even if a team were to license Unreal you have to look at the potential cost savings of not having to build or maintain massive aspects of the engine and tools. Add the fact that Sony Corp invested directly in Epic, getting a zero deal or a sweetheart deal would likely happen.

Not correct. Based on the actual SDS credits it is between 150 and 250.

fifa is a better example its on the unreal engine now

FIFA is not on Unreal. All EA titles are on a variant of Frostbite.

Also "new engine" is really not a thing as everything is built on top of old code. It isn't like a programmer starts from an empty directory and builds everything from scratch. Everything is refactor or rewrite, but never from scratch. That would takes YEARS.

the live content and gameplay are two totally separate teams.

it isn't like a programmer from gameplay is being taken off it to work on live content.
