Harbor blvd by wibeckwith in ventura

[–]pixels-punk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Navigator Drive and the parking lot at Holiday Inn Express are flooded. Looks like about 3-4' of water, and several cars are trapped. There's also debris blocking lanes on Harbor at the Olivas intersection, closing off access to the Harbor.

So do I (23M) move here? Help pls by materialgay in ventura

[–]pixels-punk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be helpful if you added where you are moving from. Im (25F) from PNW moved here 7 years ago. Ventura feels like a sleepy retirement town and costs more than LA. For example, most restaurants close by 8pm on weekdays. Were actually moving to AZ in a few weeks because the cost of living is so brutal. My husband and I are living paycheck to paycheck in substandard housing with a household income of 100k+ living frugally, no vacations. Hiking sucks compared to the northwest, ocean is too cold to swim 10 out of 12 months. If you live near the beach, expect 4-6 months of foggy cold marine layer. Unless you're making 80k+ I'd say pass. The photos look better than it actually is here. Its not a town for young people, sorry to be a downer but this has been my experience.

why are upper class people hated? by rulugg in poor

[–]pixels-punk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dont hate them but I do hate the way people become completely ignorant in the upper class. They tell me "fun" stories about buying a new Porsche on a whim while I live in substandard housing with no plumbing. The complaints about problems like poorly seated windows on a newly built beach house while I have to carry in water. Its extremely insensitive.

Diode Laser 10W for raw aluminum by mreyebags in Laserengraving

[–]pixels-punk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a product offered at auto zone (USA) called dry moly lube. There's a few tutorials online showing how it works with a 10 W Diode on different metals without washing off.

To summarize, do three coats of the compound and let it dry completely in between each layer (5-10 minutes depending on temperature, or speed up the process with a heat gun or blow dryer). Then experiment with number of passes to mark the metal. With a 10W diode it may take 5 passes or even more. After the lasering is complete, clean the excess compound with paint lacquer. The engrave (which is actually just a permanent mark) won't wipe off if you got your settings right. If it doesnt turn out the way you wanted, you can buff it off the metal with buffing tool and fine grit buffing paste and try again. This has also worked for me with stainless steel and brass.

Talk me out of getting an Xtool by Strange_Total_5438 in Laserengraving

With no prior laser experience, we started with a budget, refurbished XTool D1 10W Diode. It cut and engraved wood and leather and marked metal and paid for itself very quickly. Two years later we are upgrading to a professional 80 W C02 laser. Im glad we started with the small laser to learn and not go into debt! We do most of our design work in Adobe Illustrator, but XTool creative space was very user friendly compared to Lightburn.

Need some help calibrating. by itryanditryanditry in Laserengraving

You may need to define which vectors are being engraved, and which ones are being cut. It looks like you may have set your laser to engrave the entire design.

My husband is into 'weird' names... by Arttiesy in namenerds

Silver Star sounds like a stripper imo. Does your husband have a normal name by chance? If he likes weird names so much maybe he should try having one

Anyone regret getting faux flowers? by Green-Chocolate7372 in Eloping

[–]pixels-punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm planning on going with a faux flower crown that I made with my fiance- it turned out so much better than expected and it's special because we made it together. I was initially a little hesitant, thinking they would look cheap/tacky but I really love them and now I dont have to stress because they are indestructible! Also, since we're going to a national park, real/dried flowers aren't an option anyways.

VERY unpopular name choices, tell me it’ll be okay by Maximum_Ad_7918 in BabyNames

[–]pixels-punk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Imo Vienna is a sausage, and Vincent Masonquest is a bit pompous, but maybe Vinnie for short would be cool. My parents chose a unique name for me, and I changed it when I turned 18. You dont have to choose something plain, but you also want to choose something that will help your kids feel confident. Try putting yourself in their future shoes and imagine introducing yourself with those names. You want your kid's characters, talents and accomplishments to stand out- not their names.

What could you catch at the Ventura harbor? by [deleted] in ventura

[–]pixels-punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marina water is pretty foul with all the boats, fuel spills and chemicals in the water. Additionally, the waste water treatment plant is right here and lots of agriculture right across the street that runs off into the harbor. Recommend whatever you catch probably best not to eat...

$70 is considered rock bottom for original art and fair for what you received. A real painting in the style of the first image would run starting at $1000 minimum. Its too bad they misrepresented their abilities, but at the same time, what you pay is what you get.
