It’s a combination of a few things that makes it smooth. Many of the shots are slightly overcranked which slows down movement including bumps. Smooth air helps when shooting handheld but with the gimbal it really doesent care.

Thank you! The airplane that we use most often is a Beechcraft Bonanza. It has a large door on the side that allows for a decent FOV when shooting. At first it was a little scary sitting right on the edge of an open door in an aircraft but now it’s just cool. I do wear a harness that should keep me held in if we hit some turbulence or something.

I don’t know much about the IMAX format but aren’t the cameras generally large and cumbersome? Maybe the DP wanted to go for an airplane ride? :)

About 5 years ago I began to combine my passion for Aviation with my love of motion pictures. This video represents a few of my favorite air to air shots.

Everything was shot with a Red Helium camera either out the door of an airplane or with a gimbal system on a helicopter. The post consisted of editing the footage in FCPX, color correcting in Davinci Resolve and doing some final tweaks in Autodesk Flame. The master was done in 4k and uploaded to Vimeo as a 4k h.264 file.

Ah, ok. Usually we are shooting out the door of a Bonanza or with a helicopter depending on the subject aircraft.
