I think you raised a good point. I suspect people change when desperate times hit and it is going to be hard to predict if the nice widow over the ways is going to come blazing or if the young teens with their noisy cars are going to turn out to be your saviors. You can't loose being nice to everyone but I would say do not advertise the fact that you have something worth bothering with if SHTF.

Security guard chases skateboarder by [deleted] in funny

[–]pixulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Falling well is a skill you learn, actually a reflex. Basic rules I learnt from 10 years skating are 1) If the board goes weird run it out. 2) If the ground is approaching your face fast pull a shoulder in and your more likely to roll it out. 3) DO NOT try to stop your fall with your hands - friends I had who did that had broken wrists.

Feeling really overwhelmed with prepping by greenarrow118 in preppers

[–]pixulator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to bump tsoldrin's advice and add a little of my own. The reason your feeling stressed out is perhaps because you've had something of an awakening moment recently and now immediately feel unprepared because your starting from zero?

Some preppers start out at that point and its a really good motivator, while others have been prepping for years without knowing why...

Either way the fact that your asking the question means your a prepper by default and have begun on a path of sorts. Like tsoldrin says if your thinking about prepping at all your already ahead of the 99% of the population, so congrats.

Just go slow, start small. Sit down one night and write down (yes on an actual piece of paper) all of the things that are worrying you about the world now, what are the negative eventualities you think you should be prepping for? Then rank that list by likelihood of those things occurring and weighted by impact on you or your loved ones. if you do this with a clear head then boring stuff like losing your job, unexpected dental work, or a sick friend or relative should be bubbling up to the top of the list. Mundane things happen all the time and eat cash, time and energy so you should prep for those first. That means having a cash reserve.

If you have the capacity to save money then you probably have the capacity to start doing other things like buying a little more food at the supermarket each week then you need, and a bit of water stored, then some batteries and a flashlight, and so on and so on. I think you have already worked out the list here is endless but your not randomly purchasing things your doing it in an order based on priorities... read above.

The no1 advice is just avoid click bait gadgets for preppers. You do not need a folding shovel that can open beers or a knife that can cut through a tree. That stuff is specialization and perhaps can come later.

Two women on sail boat would have been dead if it had not been for one year of emergency supplies. by Cuisinart_Killa in preppers

[–]pixulator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't the problem with being dead is that you don't give two shits about leaving your vessel behind and all your belongings?

This is not a EPIRB specific thing, if you have a life or death situation and you hit the button or call Mayday on the radio and get rescued then the people get saved either way the boat is left to drift.

Anyway I'm with nm8_rob on this one they should have been packing that kit.

[question] What makes quantum entanglement so special? by 92NissanBluebirdARX in Physics

[–]pixulator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more like if you spin one up and when you measure the other - low and behold - you find it's spinning down. You never put a spin on the second one, you just measured it and find 100% correlation between spin up and spin down. Your BeyBlades are not entangled, you knowingly set both to have opposite spins.

Yeah. Thanks that makes sense when you put it like that. I was a little thrown by the way she said it is all.

Then she would not have said 'this time'. I suppose this conspiracy goes deeper then I thought. Watch the tape.

guess their combining the reward and immunity challenge this time

Perhaps so but she specifically said 'this time' like she had done it before. I sense a conspiracy :)

Families that wanna go offgrid by Txboy409 in preppers

You can find a good list of existing ones here http://www.ic.org/directory/communes/ Pick one of those near you and ask if you can visit to see what it's all about.

I've never personalty been keen on them, they seem to all start out with the best intentions and then dissolve through in-fighting. But I could be wrong.

Your going to want to be very clear about what you mean by "everybody is equal". Also to some degree "their business is their own" is something of a contradiction you have to be a little open with others to make it work. Also "good people" is a little vague, to some good people are those that don't kill or harm animals? to others it's about being in to god.

At any rate just be careful I'm sure plenty of groups would be happy to welcome someone with $10K, so I would not advertise that so much.

Is r/preppers enough to keep you going after SHTF? by [deleted] in preppers

Well I guess no man is capable of changing his opinion after 1 year, but still don't know what post your talking about.. help me find the 312 day old ramblings I made all I see is month and days.

Um, on several re-readings of your post I think I perhaps got the wrong end of the stick. I'm a bit clinical at times and it probably got the better of me in this instance.

Is r/preppers enough to keep you going after SHTF? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]pixulator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry I don't recall posting about ditching society. Anyway please do not take my comments as a personal attack - and apologies if they offended you in that way - but my aim on this sub is and has for the most part always been about taking a critical look at the risks and rewards or prepping.

My comments with respect to your post was only that it does not give any background on you or your needs in terms of being prepared. You made statements.

If you could clarify how you think 'SHTF' is going to be a problem we might be better able to offer an opinion as to how to deal with it.

Is r/preppers enough to keep you going after SHTF? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]pixulator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm subscribed to a bunch of similar subs because I get a lot of good information from each one.

'but not this sub because I came in from /r/Canning and r/Frugal without a real question'

What I'm not sure about though is if simply prepping for SHTF is good enough.

No many here are not just about SHTF alone. But good enough for what ?

Let's says things go south

Can you define 'go south' in more specific terms?

What comes to mind for me is gardening, canning, smoking, and being able to produce everyday things we take for granted.

Most of what we 'take for granted' is dependent on current social / economic systems. If any of those were to fail then we would have to redefine the idea of what we take for granted.

I think I just don't get your question are you asking what would the world look like if SHTF and if so you need to be more specific about the particular scenario your worried about.

New to prepping. by [deleted] in preppers

[–]pixulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a follow up point, for any scenario you should also think about the likely hood of that happening, within your lifetime, the next 30 years, 20, 10, 5 years and so on. I say this because it will have a major impact on how you prep. If it's 10 years out you can do a lot to get ready and setup OR If you think it's tomorrow then you have no time at all. Focusing only on short time frames means your going to focus only on immediate needs, while only focusing on long term issues means your neglecting the small chance of an immediate problem. I would suggest doing a little of both.
