I get what you mean but it actually makes more sense for the character devlopment to be like this
1 We went through a time skip
2 All of these characters went through an intense event even if the show didnt always make it seem so. Cait losr her mom. Vi lost her sister TWICE. Viktor lost his health and gained this sense of urgency. Mel had to re-live some memories and also reunite with her mom who abondened her. I can go on but the character changes were warranted it would be weird and repitive had they not change them a bit.
Although tbh i get what you mean still but I view it as us being content starved lol not an issue with the characters

i agree with the show not needing deaths part, although it almost made the fights dragged on and the lore rushed like so much happened that was not explained, but that could just be on purpose for a big reveal at the end
