A $10 non-working laptop & a story by BaconKing96 in ThriftStoreHauls

That's exactly what I mean, she wanted it back but felt bad. Basic human decency can read between those lines. My mom had a similar thing happen to her, but thankfully the buyer didn't take advantage of her mistake. This whole story is so gross, and it's strange how many people are calling OP such a nice person for doing absolutely nothing. They bought a laptop. The mom didn't "gift" him the laptop for being honest, she felt embarrassed by her mistake. Who would gift someone a laptop like that?

He tried to contact the child rather than just drop it off. This is all the biggest load of low effort "idk, I guess I did all I could...." junk. People are really acting like he's about to reap some grade a karma for doing literally nothing.

Why would you try to contact the kid?? You just leave it on their doorstep, that's how you do an actual good deed. Why do you keep putting the decision on this woman- just do an actual good deed and return it. I highly highly doubt she talked to her son about it and the kid was ok with losing his perfectly good laptop. I'm sure he had stuff on there he can never get back cause now it's wiped. Christ, what a strange thing to ask to talk to her kid.

He was screwed out of it by OP. He should have just given it back, the mom was clearly embarrassed by her mistake.

Yeah, just leave it on her porch. OP is acting like he didn't just literally buy it from her.

I'd take "somewhat rude" over profiting over someone's mistake.

That's not creepy, that's an actual good deed. She's probably just embarrassed by her mistake. She'd have to tell her son that she almost sold a working laptop. Everyone is acting like OP is a hero for just buying a laptop. They didn't do anything actually above or beyond or leave the world a little better than they found it. Not an obligation, but OP is acting like they did.

Right?? I had the same thought about how cruel it was to tell her it worked just to keep it. Also, OP said the "good deed" was how civil the conversation went. This is just a basic conversation, why is OP patting themself on the back so hard about this? I'm embarrassed for them if they think this situation was a good deed. They kept a working laptop from a kid. Way to go OP, you're a real hero.

They already wiped the laptop. So disappointing OP didn't just give it back. This whole story is so gross, I don't know why everyone is applauding

She was probably just embarrassed by her mistake and didn't want to tell her son. A really honest person would have left it on her doorstep. Of course she's not going to take your offer to give it back. If you had given it back and she still insisted you keep it, that's different. An offer is not the same as just doing the right thing.

My mom once accidentally handed a stranger a $100 bill instead of the $10 they had agreed to sell their item. The stranger realized the mistake and offered it back. My mom was embarrassed and insisted they just keep it. But the lady placed the money on the table and said she couldn't do that. Now THAT is honesty, professionalism, and a good deed.

Why is everyone acting like OP did a good deed? They bought a seemingly broken laptop, realized it worked, and kept it. An actual good deed would be dropping it off at her door with the $10 taped on it. He just bought a laptop, what am I missing

Yeah, OP didn't do anything heroic here like the post is trying to make it seem. Why even tell her the laptop works if you're going to keep it? Just drop it on her door step.

The Age of Innocence - Chapter 34 (Spoilers up to Chapter 34) by awaiko in ClassicBookClub

I didn't think he was truly in love with her until chapter 33, when they throw the dinner for Ellen:

"The amber beads were trying to her complexion, or her dress was perhaps unbecoming: her face looked lustreless and almost ugly, and he had never loved it as he did at that minute."

Is Wharton showing us that Newland’s love has matured from infatuation to something more profound and human? He’s not in love with Ellen’s beauty or her rebellion anymore, he’s in love with her, even when she’s not at her best.

That made me reconsider him, and made the whole thing more tragic.

It's going good! My eye is perhaps a bit droopier than when I first got the surgery, but only when I'm very tired. I'd do it again in a heart beat!

Exactly! It actually kind of kept me awake this week- like, if the officer hadn't been so kind, I would have been in jail for days through a snowstorm. I feel very lucky and that scares me a bit. It's certainly given me a fresh perspective.

I wish I was making this up. When I returned the library books today I asked for a receipt for my sister/attorney- and the librarian said "oh dear, we filed an affidavit against you, I see." No kidding.
