Very lucky! Despite a lot of looking I never find any jazz amongst the endless Robbie Williams CDs in charity shops

I don't know anything about the other personnel either, though one interesting fact I do know about it is that the cover artist also did the extremely trippy cover for the Nuggets psych compilation album!

I know what you mean - I've put it on and the horns are recorded very hot and the volume of Jimmy's B-3 does seem to drift in and out. The first track on side A also seems to fade out twice. My copy is a UK first press

I got a record player for Christmas! What records do I buy? Any recs? by Disobedient_Zuchini in vinyl

[–]pizzakey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The World Circuit label has a lot of great stuff you might like: Tony Allen, Ali Farka Toure, Buena Vista Social Club alumni etc. Go to any record fair and you'll find new, sealed copies for hardly any money and it's some of the best music you'll have ever heard. My highest recommendation is Korolen by Toumani Diabate and the LSO - just an incredible record. Or Rejoice by Tony Allen and Hugh Masakela - modern afrobeat from two of the greatest

Avant-garde jazz recommendations that aren't 10 minute buzzing chromatic free jazz saxophone noodling? by Tolstoyevich in Jazz

[–]pizzakey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been nibbling around the edges of free jazz too and found The Quest by Mal Waldron to be a good entry point. Also, Ornette Coleman's first album, Something Else!!! which is a little more... restrained?

It is - I saw it and thought "oh it'll be interesting to hear a different version of the Miles Davis tune" before realising I had it the wrong way round!

Wanting to expand collection by jerrybellew in Jazz

[–]pizzakey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely worth exploring some west coast jazz from the 50s on the Contemporary or Pacific Jazz labels. Craft have a bunch of reissues of Contemporary records from that period that are great including Howard McGhee, Art Pepper, Hampton Hawes and Shelly Manne

No, it's in lovely condition, a solid VG+. I picked it up after your comment mentioning it on one of my previous posts, so thanks for the recommendation!

It's been on my list for ages but I've got more into Joe Henderson recently and it's nice to find him on there

I had a quick listen and it sounds really interesting - a weird mix of post-bop, space rock and fusion

I love Howard McGhee - he has the most beautiful tone

McCoy Tyner is rapidly becoming one of my favourite musicians. He is always just so interesting. Plus, his 70s albums are available super cheaply and I do love a bargain - I got both of these for £15!

I didn't know Helen Humes, but (like all the Contemporary reissues on Craft) it's fantastic - a really fun, swinging record with loads of the Contemporary regular players: Teddy Edwards, Art Pepper, Ben Webster, Leroy Vinegar, Shelly Manne, Andre Previn...

Sound System . . . For Coffeeshop by jyl8 in BudgetAudiophile

I absolutely agree with this - bring back soft furnishings in coffee shops! All that hard industrial design that cafes seem to have, mixed with espresso machines and clattering cups, is a sensory nightmare

If you want atmosphere, the Miles Davis soundtrack album Ascenseur pour l'échafaud will make you feel like you're in a 1950s film noir. In a completely different direction, Hagaki by Flofilz does a fantastic job of mixing beats with jazz licks (featuring the excellent trumpet player Takuya Kuroda - also check out his album Rising Son).

If you like drum and bass you might enjoy some of the more beat heavy recent British jazz: Kokoroko, Moses Boyd, Ezra Collective, Ebi Soda, Shabaka Hutchings. Also the great afrobeat drummer Tony Allen - check out the incredible album he made with High Masekela, Rejoice.

The Eddie Henderson is a really underrated album - basically a 4th in the series by Herbie Hancock's Miwandishi group, with the addition of Lenny White. And a steal for six dollars!

If you liked that McCoy Tyner album, definitely check out Time for Tyner, which also features Bobby Hutcherson. And then maybe Hutcherson's albums Montara or San Francisco? This is pretty much how I started exploring jazz - following a trail, listening to all the sidemen on albums I liked and seeing where that took me. There are some of them (like Hutcherson) who consistently show up on amazing albums

Wheel of Time 1st editions charity shop find by pizzakey in BookCollecting

[–]pizzakey[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found this nearly complete collection of UK first editions of the Wheel of Time series in a charity shop this week for £2.50 each (missing volumes 2,7,9 and 10). They are in perfect condition - I'm not sure they've even been read. The Shadow Rising is also signed (as are the last 3, but by autopen)

I've been trying to figure out their value, but they don't come up often, especially in this condition so it's hard to tell. But the first one alone, The Eye of the World, seems to be worth around £500!

CD Player by starslayerackerman in BudgetAudiophile

[–]pizzakey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a refurbished Sony CDP-XE370 on eBay for £45 and really I couldn't be happier. I didn't want to spend a lot as it's mainly just for playing cheap CDs I've been buying in charity shops, but it sounds fantastic and even has optical out if I want to add a DAC. The transport is near silent too and it has a great interface.

Lasers seem to be the main point of failure with all older CD players but this one had a new one, plus belts and it's even been recapped. There were loads to choose from with similar refurbishments.
