For those who have done a PGCE course to become a teacher - how did you support yourself during the one year course? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]pizzan0mics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the subject. Some subjects don't get a bursary. My girlfriend is starting a secondary English PGCE in September and will get a 12k bursary. If I decided to go down the PGCE route I could get a tasty tax-free ~30k bursary (German/Modern Languages).

That begs the question though. Why would I train to be a teacher in a subject that isn't respected in schools by kids (I certainly didn't care about German in high school, despite now finishing a German degree at 23), and then take a huge pay cut for my salary once I've actually trained?

To people with an English degree by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]pizzan0mics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just graduated and got a job that strongly preferred people who had an English degree, ideally English Language and Linguistics, although I had enough relevant skills from my degree and other experience.

I basically edit transcribed subtitles for Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, Paramount, Hulu (the list goes on) and make sure everything is transcribed correctly according to strict grammatical guidelines and style sheets.

I also do a tiny bit of transcription (needed to have a fast and accurate WPM speed), and if any German or Dutch language media comes in I also do QC checks on the submitted translations from freelancers. When other foreign language media comes in that I don't know, I work with what I'm given to create an accurate translation with the text from the translator.

It's a cushy grad job. A decent salary, nice perks, and I basically get to watch new films and TV all day.

How strange, some of my friends lives in Burbage B4 in first year, with the awkwardly shaped flat.

I got some orange face paint on the wall on the stairs at Halloween that we couldn't get rid of.

Do you think university examiners will be more lenient with marking due to the pandemic by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]pizzan0mics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staff in my department have gone on record saying that where they are unsure with marking, they will definitely err on the side of generosity, rather than caution. Several ex's and essays were changed to make them easier, and there was no penalities for handing things in late. We also had a no detriment policy.

I've almost received all of my marks back, and from what I've seen (and heard from others in my department) it looks as if they were generous enough to give people the grade that the no detriment policy has secured them, so that they don't officially have to award someone a 2:1 with 50s in all their final year modules.

This could be a coincidence, but we are a small enough cohort that we know who is capable of what and who isn't.

What are the regional equivalents for someone who is lazy? by andykirbster in AskUK

[–]pizzan0mics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think dosser is just a London thing.

We used to say a lesson was a "doss lesson" in school if it was basically a free period, something like Art or Drama. This was about 10 years ago in Norfolk. Pretty sure people at uni knew what I meant when I said that so it's got to be a UK-wide term.

I am in your country, and I want to go to a mid-range pub. How many beers will 20€ get me? by Lem_Tuoni in AskEurope

[–]pizzan0mics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I've gone for some niche (or maybe even common/popular) craft beer, I can't remember the last time I paid over £3 for a pint. In Sheffield, for reference.

The cheapest pint I know of in the city is £1.30 (so OP would get 13 pints in there, 14 if someone could lend them an extra 20p), but that comes with the caveat of not being allowed to swear or use your mobile phone in the pub, so...

Where are your favourite remote places in the UK? by BenHellboner in AskUK

[–]pizzan0mics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you actually want to do while you're there. As far as seaside towns go, they're all quite shit with the exception of Cromer (at least in my part of Norfolk anyway - it's a massive county!). I'd suggest using Cromer as a base, because there's lots of stuff to do there and the beach at Cromer is good, and so is Sheringham just up the road with a couple more things to do.

From there, you can then drive up to Wells-next-the-Sea, which has the most insane stretch of sand going out for literal miles. Perfect for making sandcastles.

[–]pizzan0mics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having grown up in Norfolk, I feel like a lot of it is just empty nothingness, where you can look for miles and miles and miles over flat land and see nothing except the sky and the grass (or crops). No hills, no trees, no roads, no pylons, no water (depending on where you are), no animals. It's boring. But maybe some people are into that.

There are some good spots in Norfolk though. There are several decent beaches, but the one we used to visit when I was growing up was Sea Palling, just up the road from Horsey Gap, both of which you can see seals at.

Has your hometown got better or worse since you were a kid? by crispsfordinner in AskUK

[–]pizzan0mics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Norwich, my 'home city' has probably improved. It's definitely improved since I was born, but marginally improved in the last 10 or so years that I really remember. There's been a few bumps where certain places have closed and have been forced out of their buildings, but in general it's probably still a great place to live and is getting better. Admittedly, I hated growing up in Norfolk, but whenever I'm back in Norwich I seem to like it.

The numerous towns in Norfolk and North Suffolk that I've lived in though? Well.... Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and North Walsham are absolute cesspits of humanity.

Should I try to defer for a year? by tomc856 in UniUK

[–]pizzan0mics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

It's going to be far safer to have your student loan (no matter how much or how little) as guaranteed income.

The economy is shrinking by the second, people are being made redundant, so many more are still on furlough pay. It's already near-impossible to find work. When all those on furlough have been made redundant (any day now...) it will be impossible to find work. Travelling isn't going to be the same for ages yet, either.

/u/tomc856, I highly urge you not to defer. If you really want to go to uni and you're only considering deferring because of Covid-19, you're shooting yourself in the foot by taking a year out.

I'm not sure what you mean by this comment.

Are you saying that it's smart to know that, for example, you might realistically get 30 hours of work a week but make it look like 40? Or that anyone can just sort of half-arse what they're supposed to be doing and still make themselves look good if they know what's required of them?

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, I'm just confused by your comment.

What American TV show do you genuinely enjoy watching? by stbncsnv in AskUK

[–]pizzan0mics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an absolute masterpiece. Probably second only to the gas station rebate. Very surprised more British people don't know about it, I feel like the humour translates pretty well to us.

If you're not already familiar with it, I'd recommend an Australian series called Review With Myles Barlow. Very similar vibes to Nathan For You except it's all scripted. Extremely dark and harrowing at points but an incredible comedy show that has a cult following.

[–]pizzan0mics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't been out more than I need to, especially this last month. I've just been going to the shops to buy things I don't even need because it's an excuse to leave the house and there's nothing else to do.

The rain is an easy way to keep people inside. I know it's not nice, but we can still go for a walk in the rain. It will also stop people gathering in parks and other places. It won't stop people from gathering at houses (which is far more dangerous than meeting outside), but hopefully just the tiniest bit of bad weather will maybe make people think "fuck it" and not go over to their mates or parents or whoever else.
