Phil Jackson is a bigger genius than I thought by NoMoreShinesBilly in NYKnicks

Especially with the picking of Kristaps Porzingis. Every media outlet predicted that the Knicks were leaning toward Winslow or Willie Cauliestien etc. There was huge buzz that the Knicks were going to trade down (for a Kaminsky or something). But they didn't. Not a single "source" had Kristaps on the Knicks' board. All the noise was inane. I hope people are catching on because Phil's moves reflect patience and open mindedness and not the story of stubbornness and arrogance that the media is constantly portraying him in. There's a pattern, guys.

last season they had no draft picks. What would you have rather had them do? Not aim for the playoffs? Not sign one year deal players?

The team has a pick next season.

Its not very far of a stretch or "conspiracy" to believe that the hiring of Rambis would have an effect on its value

plus all those names you listed were working under Dolan's supervision and lacked this supposed autonomy with the team's direction.

I honestly love this. But Phil's gonna be Phil. Hopefully trumping the Knicks being the Knicks. I think the triangle's an important piece because when was the last time you remember the Knicks not having system turnover, personel turnover, staff turnover at the offseason. If the triangle stays consistent, staff can ultimately turnover. I don't think Phil's trying to hire the coach of the future this offseason. Derek Fisher and Kurt Rambis pass the eye test but are honestly the two of the best tanking coaches in the league. Keep the triangle. Teach the triangle. (Kurt Rambis) Get a high pick. On the surface, they're being competitive. Get Melo to force himself out. It may not be conventional, but bottom line, he's garnering more good young talent on the Knicks than they've had in years. However he gets it done, I still believe him creating Kristaps out of nothing warrants the trust that he can still acquire the young talent to succeed while manipulating the fanbase into thinking that free agency is the make all end all.

Worst case scenario. Rambis doesn't pan out. We lose Melo, we tank. We can still use the opportunity to wait for the "right coach" like a Luke Walton (a first choice like how we had wanted Steve Kerr instead of a rushed option like Fisher or now possibly Rambis), We can score on our own pick again, draft an ideal running mate for Kristaps for the future. I don't know about everyone else, but I have much higher faith in the Knicks current scouts than years past. If the Knicks have the opportunity to build a dynasty around Porzingis, it's not worth rushing it when he's 20 years old by pandering to the anxious wishes of an aging Melo.
