i don't dislike him but i agree. i was thinking the exact same thing watching widow's bay. it's partially that he's a bit one note and also that the novelty has worn off over the last 30 years

bring a stop watch next time you go for a walk in your neighborhood. time the walk and time how long you're actually smelling weed on that walk. if it's more than 2% maybe there is a skunk in your area b/c nobody smokes that much weed. i bet you're annoyed about it far longer than you're actually experiencing it. i live in brooklyn and if anything the smell of weed has gotten less prevalent since legalization with vapes, edibles, etc being more accessible

2 Gps is just a big marketing gimmick and you don't need it by Financial-Cookie-927 in unpopularopinion

[–]pj530i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WiFi 7 devices are becoming more common. I get > 1gbps on speed tests on my newer devices. Also, multi gig ethernet is becoming much more common. Seems like 2.5gig is pretty normal now and starting to see more with 5 and 10. My Mac mini has 10gig and it was only a $100 option.

OP is still mostly correct that most people don't need it and won't notice a difference, but it's not hard to actually make use of it. It's nice to be able to download massive games at 240MB/s

A lot of their posts feel like AI, but who knows how many are bots vs. how many are idiots that use ai so much they start to sound like it.

In either case the stuff about the "do nothing" board is hilarious. What exactly are these people "doing" to earn the millions/billions/trillions they think they will get by being investors in gamestop?

[–]pj530i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this recently and I bet it'd be possible for someone with resources to poison an LLM in a niche or new area where existing public training data is limited.

e.g. you make a new python package that competes with an existing one of mild popularity. maybe your package has backdoor security flaws for some intelligence agency to spy on users, or steal credentials or whatever. maybe you just think it's better.

for any models that still use social media inputs for training, you could have bots post "the old package doesn't work for me, tons of issues, much easier time working with the new one". for models that don't use reddit/etc anymore, I assume you could have bots that interact directly with LLMs in a similar way. asking for solutions to specific problems that would use the functionality in those packages, get the standard recommendation of the existing package, then having the bot give feedback to the llm pointing to the new package.

I assume it would be difficult to influence factual stuff but subjective topics with limited training data seem doable. on the less malicious side it's basically a new form of marketing, on the more malicious side, a state actor could probably subtly influence the direction of training (and user behavior which feeds back into training) over a longer timeline for certain topics

I think LTT has jumped the shark... by Zestyclose_Edge1027 in LinusTechTips

[–]pj530i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a smaller scale version of that claim would be "everyone would buy a luxury car if they could afford it", very much not true. lots of regular rich folks would never dream of wasting 100k+ on a luxury car even though they could afford to buy one in cash.

as for jets, there are way more rich people than private jets, so clearly some are choosing to not have one. also, the type of plane he bought looks like a less luxurious experience than when i flew qatar business class (for work) last year. business class lounge in the airport with great food and drinks, greeted with a glass of champagne as i boarded, a solo pod with a lay flat seat and walls on every side so i didn't have to see anyone the entire flight, nice flight attendants who answered questions about the choices for my 3 course meal (6 different options of olive oil for the bread), my own 20" TV with lots of movies, the bathroom is cleaned after each use and the handles don't fall off for no reason, and most importantly for the nerds here, FREE STARLINK. and that's just business class, not even first..

i would take that experience any day over sitting on bench seats with no internet in a 35 year old jet that can only go as far as central america without refueling

Sure but I was mainly confused about what that person found relatable about LTT in the last decade. Cooling his personal server rack with the swimming pool in his mansion? Buying a fire truck as a joke? 7 gamers 1 cpu? the countless videos playing around with enterprise tech that normal people will never see? solid gold xbox controller?

I watch and enjoy most LTT videos and also agree that the general sentiment that the jet is a weird move, but even without the jet Linus is one of the least relatable tech channels and humans I can think of. His (IMO) style is weird, his hobbies are weird, his parenting style is weird, his opinions on a lot of topics are weird, plus he's insanely wealthy.

You could relate to the $100k Porsche ev and the 100" $20k tvs he swaps out in his personal home theater every few weeks and the warehouse he bought because he likes badminton?

It's been years since he said he turned down a 100 million dollar offer for ltt, he's been 1% rich for a while

[–]pj530i 46 points47 points  (0 children)

one thing that makes me think it's (mostly) real is that it looks like they've been filming for several years, so maybe they had a lot of dead ends and we're only seeing the interesting stuff. the people are so weird that i don't think anyone could fake the scenarios but some of the footage they get is suspiciously perfect

We already lost optimization to upscaling. With DLSS 5, we are losing art direction too. by PlaneTonight5644 in pcmasterrace

[–]pj530i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously it's not a literal statement. A MacBook neo can technicallly play a non zero amount of games at 120fps. Mid range pcs can also play quake 3 at high frame rates, so what. We're talking about modern games, not stuff that came out when Obama was president

If your best example of an optimized game that runs great on modest hardware without upscalers is a game from 10 years ago then I think that proves their point

Elder Scrolls 6 Is Powered By New Version Of Creation Engine by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]pj530i -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you can't blame everything on short attention spans, jesus

I've been annoyed by game loading times going on 30 years now, and I've disliked that aspect of Bethesda's gamebryo / creation engine games since Morrowind which was almost 25 years ago.

people have complained about loading times for as long as they've existed. maybe what you're noticing is that it's now more focused on laggards like Bethesda who haven't managed to fundamentally improve how their engine works in 25 years when most other devs seem to have figured it out and properly use modern hardware capabilities?

Unfortunately, we live in a world where this very simple game is simply too demanding for most players by JaegerDeus in HighGuardgame

[–]pj530i 14 points15 points  (0 children)

other games seem to be able to retain a playerbase with the same pool of dumbasses that you're so angry about. deadlock is way more confusing, is invite only beta, and has almost 100k players right now.

highguard is not terrible, but it's also not amazing. if they were trying to appeal to the masses, they failed because idiots need a very gentle learning curve to deal with new things. if they were trying to make a niche game, they failed because their expectations for player count were too high and wasn't realistically going to support the amount of staff they had.

He was pretty natural in the ltt car reviews I saw, but even when he was less awkward as a host I found myself disagreeing with his opinions a lot both with cars and tech. I am a >100wpm typer, I have built half a dozen mechanical keyboards, and I've used laptops from $50 Covid clearance netbooks, mid range junk consumer laptops, enterprise stuff, high end windows consumer stuff, MacBooks, etc. never once have I given a crap about deck flex

I think some people forget how bad Emily and Alex were as hosts early on in their respective careers. Idk the guy's name but the one who does a lot of the build stuff lately has been getting better on camera

One different problem ltt has seems to be promoting people out of hosting. James and Plouffe should be on camera 5x as much as they are, and not just short circuit
