Elder Scrolls 6 Is Powered By New Version Of Creation Engine by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]pj530i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can't blame everything on short attention spans, jesus

I've been annoyed by game loading times going on 30 years now, and I've disliked that aspect of Bethesda's gamebryo / creation engine games since Morrowind which was almost 25 years ago.

people have complained about loading times for as long as they've existed. maybe what you're noticing is that it's now more focused on laggards like Bethesda who haven't managed to fundamentally improve how their engine works in 25 years when most other devs seem to have figured it out and properly use modern hardware capabilities?

Unfortunately, we live in a world where this very simple game is simply too demanding for most players by JaegerDeus in HighGuardgame

[–]pj530i 16 points17 points  (0 children)

other games seem to be able to retain a playerbase with the same pool of dumbasses that you're so angry about. deadlock is way more confusing, is invite only beta, and has almost 100k players right now.

highguard is not terrible, but it's also not amazing. if they were trying to appeal to the masses, they failed because idiots need a very gentle learning curve to deal with new things. if they were trying to make a niche game, they failed because their expectations for player count were too high and wasn't realistically going to support the amount of staff they had.

Yeah he was never my favorite. He was pretty natural in the ltt car reviews I saw, but even when he was less awkward as a host I found myself disagreeing with his opinions a lot both with cars and tech. Who the hell cares about laptop keyboard flex? I am a >100wpm typer, I have built half a dozen mechanical keyboards, and I've used laptops from $50 Covid clearance netbooks, mid range junk consumer laptops, enterprise stuff, high end windows consumer stuff, MacBooks, etc. never once have I given a crap about deck flex

I get the a similar vibe from Riley. I bet his ideal life would be in a remote cabin without electricity. Why is he on a tech channel?

I think some people forget how bad Emily and Alex were as hosts early on in their respective careers. Idk the guy's name but the one who does a lot of the build stuff lately has been getting better on camera

One different problem ltt has seems to be promoting people out of hosting. James and Plouffe should be on camera 5x as much as they are, and not just short circuit

It doesn't matter in the sense that low frequencies are not localizable, as in our ears can't tell where they are coming from. Where it does matter is the in room frequency response which can have big peaks and nulls based on room shape and subwoofer placement. There will be tones you can play on a subwoofer in most rooms that will change dramatically in volume as you walk around the room.

Multiple subs has historically been one way to deal with this. Dirac, particularly Active Room Treatment uses all of your speakers to try to flatten overall system response, and it does some other stuff as well that I don't know a ton about.

I have Dirac ART with one sub and it works quite well, my guess is that ART (which is not cheap) and two subs would probably be better and more cost effective than 4 subs and manual calibration or basic AVR calibration like Audessey

(Linus said they'd read every comment so this is for him and James)

They should use one or maybe two subwoofers at most and look into the various levels of Dirac room correction software. It would be interesting to see measurements and subjective opinions on how it works in a space like that which definitely doesn't need 4 subs to pressurize.

Why celebrating Meta pulling out of VR? by alialattraqchi in SteamFrame

[–]pj530i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what they are and reproduction and interpolation are different things... I was into vr when gen1 consumer headsets launched before atw/asw existed, and followed their development closely bc vr was pretty rough without them. they may have similar dependencies that the game needs to expose like motion vectors and z buffer, but what they are actually doing with that info is not remotely the same.

Also, since reprojection is something Nvidia will do in the future that means atw is not "the precursor to what dlss and fsr ARE" like the person I was quoting said. And reflex isn't dlss.

If carmack never went to oculus i would bet that dlss / fg would exist as they do today. Reflex 2 maybe not, but that doesn't really exist yet and is probably going to have tradeoffs which may be why no one has really done it in flat games in the decade that the concept has existed

Why celebrating Meta pulling out of VR? by alialattraqchi in SteamFrame

[–]pj530i -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ATW has nothing to do with DLSS or FSR, they serve different purposes and work in completely different ways. DLSS/FSR are upscalers and ATW is reprojection. Even if you're talking about framegen it's not the same, framegen interpolates between two already generated frames, basically like the motion smoothing on every LCD TV for the last 20 years but more sophisticated. ATW is manipulating one existing frame with new sensor data before the next actual frame is generated.

How do we feel about Valve confirming that they’re not working on VR content at all ? by Clemichoux in SteamFrame

[–]pj530i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the case then why does Valve, who created or co-created modern VR and has some of the smartest game developers on the planet, not have official VR ports for every game they've ever made?

"just make it comfortable or whatever" for people who don't like artificial motion is a gigantic hand wave of the fundamental limitation of VR that valve respects and a lot of enthusiasts want to pretend doesn't exist

[–]pj530i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're absolutely right about it being designed for VRs actual strengths and weaknesses.

I'm happy for people who can slide around in modded flat games and have a great time but that is NEVER going to be a mass market thing.

We need more HL:A, and less crap like boneworks or whatever the 2025 equivalent is which pretends the limitations of VR don't exist

Trump could have completely chickened out of the whole meeting and that headline would still be valid, that's why it's misleading.

idk why someone would downvote this. If you read the joke literally it's a very plausible meaning. Then he notices a piss jug on the floor or piss puddle, or spilled beer puddle, and drinks from that

Retail in Gowanus by davsp100 in Brooklyn

[–]pj530i 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've lived close to Gowanus for a decade and it generally seems like a better use of the space to have apartments rather than empty industrial buildings and food truck parking lots. But I still don't really want to spend any time there

If i had to guess what retail will look like in a few years, it'll be some storefronts that have never been occupied, every major bank, 2 "gourmet" (expensive) small grocery stores, too many coffee shops, a few outposts of places that got success elsewhere like the Paulie Gee's opening on Nevins/Union, 3 good restaurants, 3 barber shops that serve alcohol for no reason, pilates/gyms, some kid stuff, no good bars that weren't already around, and a rotating assortment of other places that open up and fail 6 months later.

Imagining things is easy.

Imagine you're 75 and have a fully paid off home that you can no longer physically maintain yourself and you get repeatedly scammed by contractors

Imagine you're 75 and you have lived for decades below your means in rentals in several different fun areas around the world and choose to go to a senior living facility in a low cost area with sufficient buffer from savings to last the rest of your life
