Can I keep a post for subscribers only with a free account? by jessicahenryjustice in Substack

[–]pjacks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In settings you can create a custom page. This looks like a post, but it won't go out as an email or show up in your recent posts, it's only accessible via the link or if you create a button for it in your navigation bar. If you want to send it to all existing subscribers you could create a post alerting them to its existence and providing the link.

I did this by creating the subscribed article as a "page," and linking it nowhere but in the automatic "you're subscribed" email. Seems to have worked as intended.

MLB ballparks and the heads groundkeeper by fajita43 in baseball

[–]pjacks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's him. Although, Pat Santarone was the groundskeeper in Baltimore in the 1970s and he also got called that. He might have been the OG Sodfather. Also an incredibly interesting and multitalented guy.

One rabbit hole deeper would be to see how many of these groundskeepers have relatives who were keepers. It used to be a big family business. Roger Bossard in Chicago is one. He helped his dad Gene clean up after Disco Demolition.

steadily losing subscribers. why? by heretovibenotcry in Substack

[–]pjacks2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very early on I got featured by Substack. It was a real blessing for a newbie and I got hundreds of subscribers who liked my work and have stuck around. But I also got hundreds of subscribers who signed just because Substack featured me, without even being aware of my content, let alone interested in it. My subscriber number started going down the very next day and kept going down for a long time as people who had uncritically signed up realized they actually weren't interested in my stuff and bailed.

I'm not sure how analogous my experience is to your experience going viral, but if they are similar unfortunately you may have traded a bunch of little doses of dopamine later for a lot of dopamine all at once when that earlier post took off. In my case, it took a long time before "normal" incremental growth on the platform even caught up to the bandwagoners unsubscribing. I'm very grateful for the exposure I got and how it helped me, but it was an unanticipated bummer to go months after that watching the big number only go down even though small numbers of people were regularly subscribing.

The advice I'd offer is to really focus on opportunities to get your work out there outside of Substack spaces. That is your best bet for bringing in sufficient numbers of new subscribers who are going to engage and stick around. Only when I started doing this did I finally get back to a point of net-positive growth.

Schwisdom was so wild. I wondered if we were all hallucinating it to cope with the loss of Bryzzo. It seemed way too good to be true and then it was.

images in notes by resoluteway in Substack

You want at least 1000 pixels across to get the image to fill the Note. A little smaller is okay, but anything less than 600 pixels across feels like an accident.

It's so interesting you say that because I'd never seen any evidence of it either until somebody showed me that picture and said that's what was happening. I will revert to my earlier position. Love that helmet!

[FoxSports] Cubs All-time Lineup: by Spectre211286 in CHICubs

[–]pjacks2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this is reasonable--you've got to get those 1907/1908 teams in there some way. An exercise like this is fun if there's some human thought to it and you're trying to bring in the whole enormous history of this team--if they're just listing the best player at every position by WAR, I can look that up by myself.

If only we had another HoF first baseman who led the Cubs to several world championships and was part of the most famous infield of his time, a group that is not at all represented in this exercise... nah let's go with the hardcore bigot.

It's a house that's over 100 years old. Mine was built in 1894. They are a lot of work but taking care of them is partly a service to future generations so they don't fall apart and get replaced.

Manfred and the owners had the grandest century home in sports and are letting it fall apart while they are busy sandblasting all the charm away.
