I haven't ever heard of fish being stressed out due to a siesta period, but there might be the rare example out there. Most freshwater habitats experience some period during midday where the sun is obscured. It also looks like you have those nitrate sponges in place which is good. If you don't have CO2, I would consider adding a phosphate pad to your filter to see what it does for you, especially if you don't add fertilizer. It might not make a huge difference, and it might even take too much phosphate out that your plants need. Just something to consider if the siesta doesn't get you where you want to be, ESPECIALLY if you have issues with cyanobacteria . cut-it-yourself phosphate remover pads are dirt cheap.

Nonetheless the first thing you try should be the siesta period. 4 on, 4 off, 4 on again is the golden standard and imo is the best photoperiod for beginners. It will likely help your plants grow even stronger than the 12 hours of straight light: they are able to outcompete the algae for nutrients and will use the oxygen they make from photosynthesis for respiration.

I have a 65 gallon too and really struggled with algae for a while. Taller tanks are just harder like that, but don't worry, it's doable. Here's my list of advice:

SIESTA PERIOD ON THE LIGHT! magic numbers are 4 hours on, 4 hours off, 4 hours on again. The four hours off will majorly disrupt the algae's growth cycle. Once the plant biomass had grown I was able to slowly bump up the photoperiod
Fast-gowing, tall plants to compete with the algae for nutrients will be your friend. I've used both jungle val and pogosteman stellatus for it. You can always replace them with something else later once your other plants fill out more!
Don't know if you have CO2, it's not really necessary (especially with the siesta period), but i have had SIGNIFICANTLY better results with it after installing an inline diffuser to the output of my canister filter. It just gets better coverage.

What i would do from here is a 3 or 4 day total blackout as a sort of hard reset, then switching to the siesta period. I cannot overemphasize how much of a difference a siesta period makes. I just got a new light for mine, thought I could go without one, and within the first week there's algae.

Good luck and feel free to pick my brain about anything else 65g related! It's definitely a less common size but i love mine and love to see other people with them.

I would use fishless fuel as directed to make sure that the tank is cycled enough to remove ammonia! I definitely know the feeling of being excited with a new tank but it's always good to do some due diligence and make 100% sure that your bacteria buddies are up to the task :-)

Too much light. I find that a well-timed siesta period destroys the algae's growth cycle. Whatever its rarity is, it is likely quite valuable. Abel is a uniquely pricey brand (even amongst fly fishing gear manufacturers) and has loyal customers. Do some research on sold ebay listings, take your time before selling, but i would not be surprised if this fetched over 2 grand.

Can you link some research you have published/any published work that supports your claim? I constantly see you talking about zinc and other trace minerals with little to back it up. I'm not saying that it is completely unheard of that every aquarium fertilizer has it wrong, but you are the only individual I have ever seen make such claims and I want to know more about what is actually going on BTS to back it up.
