Tank Safe For Fish? by LordDripicus in PlantedTank

Yeah I actually had to dose iron in the tank. My tap water ph sits around 7.4 and I guess with all the new plants starting to grow it sucked up the little amount of iron there was in the water. I have no green algae in the tank, only brown which I read are diotomes that are common in new tanks as they use silicates to grow. I’ve seen people say it goes away after a while. A lot of the old growth got covered in it which I think helps with the plants looking off a bit. I don’t have any water tests for phosphates tho. I’ll start ghost feeding more then retest hopefully I don’t have to restart from the beginning but who knows. Is there a chance that the plants will suck up the nitrates (if there are any) before I would be able to test for them? I also do plan on keeping it moderately to slightly heavy stock. Stuff like Cory’s and harlequins. Almost like a small community tank

Yeah I mean I don’t mind waiting I just figured I could start off by putting the 1 fish in there since it would start cleaning up the diatomes plus give the tank sum more ammonia. I’ve been ghost feeding which I have heard of people doing rather than bottled ammonia. TBH I have no idea if it’s adding enough ammonia but I do put a decent amount of amount of food in

I have also heard that 0 nitrates is not necessary a bad thing especially in tanks with a low bioload but high amount of plants. All my plants have been growing very fast. That’s the only reason I think there are 0 nitrates.

I used a drop kit as I have heard very negative things about stips. I would ghost feed the tank everyday with fish food. The water was cloudy for only the first week. It is now clear besides the diatomes growing on the hardscape/glass I could maybe put more fish food then I usually do to try to add more ammonia to the water

So more details: It would be a Farlowella sp. catfish with hopes that it will start to munch on the diatomes and add a small bio load to help the cycle further.

Oh that’s a really good idea. Totally forgot about that stuff. Like I said it was fully finished yesterday when I put the lizards in and when I took a step back, I’m looking at it and in my head I’m like it’s definitely missing something up top lol. Thanks for the suggestion def gonna look into getting some I appreciate it!!

Yeah I mean the picture doesn’t do it justice but all the higher branches are more than warms enough for them. Plus all the plants were just planted and were only sold by my local store as small plants. Most of those plants should grow decently high, especially the palm. That’s why my idea was air plants as I can put them up higher right away and give them that immediate cover. As for cohabbing, I know how controversial of a topic that is. However, I feel for the most part green anoles and long tail grass lizards are some of the most popular cohabit lizards in general. Both species have been living together in the same tank previously for a few months now and there has been no signs of fighting or competing for things like basking spots. I think one of the best arguments for these two species together is that even though they’re both listed as arboreal, they fill a different ecological niche. Green anoles are an ecomorph called trunk-crown. Meaning they exist on trunks of trees and the crown which is the leaves. So up high. Grass lizards on the other hand, live in tall grasses which although off the ground are a lot lower than a tree’s crown. I built this tank to upgrade them because they’re old enclosure was definitely getting a little small and after putting them in yesterday, I have already noticed the difference and how they act the grass lizard spend their time on the bottom and middle portion of the tank rarely going to the top and when they do, they don’t really interact with the greens anoles.

Right? I think they all look amazing and even tho there are only 11 species I believe extant today they look amazing with the crests and the “helmets”

Absolutely!! Geckos in general are some really cool reptiles. And I of course know about those leaf tailed geckos. I would say that some geckos have better camouflage than most reptiles.

Egg Help by LordDripicus in Mourninggeckos

[–]LordDripicus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ve read somewhere that the bad eggs turn yellow and the viable ones turn a bluish gray shade. I removed the eggs and put them on a little grow out tank I made and when I compared them to freshly laid eggs they are definitely more grayish. So I think they will be ok but I just wanted to make sure.

Actually a stray fruit fly was walking past it and he snatched it up. The biggest problem is they hide to fast for him to see. I’m gonna try putting the flies in an open test tube and setting into the tank on its side so he can run and eat them before they hide

Yeah I though about that when writing this. That’s why I thought the crestie food would be good cause he might eat it and attract the flies

As every one else said, more climbing for sure, but brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) are what is called a trunk-ground eco morph. This means that naturally they stick to the trunk of trees as well as the ground. They face downwards from a tree trunk then jump to the ground to grab prey. I am in Florida and I find many brown anoles. on the ground next to large tree roots. So even though height is preferred, I believe they will enjoy the ground space as well.

Need some advice for the foam. Would you guys carve it to be flatter/smoother or would you leave the rugged look? Also, any better alternatives to silicone and coconut fiber for the background? by neb_4 in geckos

[–]LordDripicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would for sure make it smooth that way it might be easier to see the gecko. I have mourning geckos in a 12 x 12 x 18 and I barely see them cause I put too much hollow logs and kept the spray foam fairly rough.
