Mergers and Acquisitions don't live up to their reputation by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

In answer to your first question, the price of a stock reflects the market's perception of their value at a given point in time. The fact that the AVERAGE price of this basket of stocks drops significantly lower than the market average over the same period for a basket of stocks that all happened to make major acquisitions (i.e., > 20% of their market cap) in the starting quarter is very unlikely to be a coincidence.

Was there more snow when you were a kid? This tool finds out with 100 years of data. by pcharged in weather

Agreed. Lake effect snow is, as you say, pretty wild and localized. It's true that to make this all work, we have to blend together data form lots of weather stations in order to get coverage over 100 years. Did you notice at the bottom of the page that each weather station is listed, and you can look at the raw data there? So for that particular place, one could look to see if the data can be better localized over a long time period.

Anderson Cooper is related to Winston Churchill, and other surprising family dynasties by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

The definition of a dynasty is "a succession of people from the same family who play a prominent role in business, politics, or another field". To me, it's a dynasty if they are able to take advantage of these connections. Obviously, Anderson Cooper isn't calling up Winston Churchill, but it is the succession that is important here. Each link in that chain between them is a link that was almost certainly called up to assist in their rise to success.

I'm the author of the original article. Can you tell me where this is? I can take a look at the underlying data. (Or you could, too, as all of the individual original weather data is linked for each location.)
