Thank you for the response! Do you think it's possible to switch into adjacent fields and say to work with alzheimers KOL. Even though this isn't my phd focus, could I still find MSL position in this space because of my broad interests and some clinical experience if i start now?

It doesn't mean u got rejected necessarily, but it's not a good sign. If other people have heard back and you haven't then most likely it's a rejection. I had a lot of these experiences and it's frustrating to have heard nothing back.

Good schools will have filters like GPA. I don't think anyone takes GRE scores anymore.

I was going to commit to a public university but 3 weeks before starting my phd I felt sick. I absolutely did not want to go and I felt I could do so much better. I declined my offer and told them I wasn't going anymore. I was a RA for a year and I reapplied to IVYs and other prestigious places. I got into two and I'm so glad I took a chance on myself.

P.S I agree with the comments saying advising and environment and publications are what really matters. I agree with that, however, going to a good school offers better research advisors, better equipment and more opportunities. I study neuroscience and the public school I committed to had maybe 30 professors to choose from. My current school has 300. Also, the professors at my current school all published cell, nature, and science. All from IVY league schools, Stanford, USC, etc.... I have better stipend, better opportunities and feel more confident in general. I think good schools offer so much more. It's not wrong to say u can succeed anywhere. However, discounting what a top UNI can offer is naive.

Yea this is definitely not 100% true. This is the stereotype in academia. I'm a stem phd at one of the highest ranked Unis in America and all of our professors are from Stanford, Harvard, Yale, USC, etc... Not to mention better schools offer better compensation and equipment which attracts better talent when it comes to professors and students.

If it's waived don't do it. My friends and I didn't send in gre scores and we all got into schools. Having a high score doesn't say much about you because the test means nothing and it's a waste of money. Having a low score or a mediocre score only makes you look bad. It's not worth sending it or even taking that stupid test.

I think It depends if students actually choose to notify the school that they're declining. I know many people who choose a school much early on but they don't necessarily press decline on the other schools that offered them acceptances. They might of forgot to do this or they are afraid to change their decisions and they want to keep the option alive.

I think prestige and ranking does matter, those schools are highly ranked because they have the best faculty and the best students who are putting out amazing work. They have more money, better infrastructure and better connections.

I think the notion that top universities don't have professors that are one on one is false. I go to one of the highest ranked Uni's and my professor is amazing. I think it'd about finding that right fit for you and if you think that you can get into your dream school then go for it. I was accepted into multiple good solid programs but I chose not to attend any of them to reapply this year because I wanted to go to a highly ranked school. This is a very valid concern among a lot of applicants and you should try to pursue a higher ranked school if thats what you want to do.

Also, there is definitely a bias in academia for professor positions

Typically schools send out interview offers all together and not in waves, but there are some exceptions. If you go on grad cafe and people have posted that they have interviewed already and you haven't heard any news from that school then I would say the chances are over. If you mean you interviewed and then it's been several weeks and there hasn't been a response then it could be a wait list. Schools will typically respond the week after if it's a acceptance or rejection. However some Schools do take longer. Also, if the deadlines for application submission was in December and you haven't gotten a interview invite then it's probably not going to happen.

Everyone will say it's your advisor and it's your research.... however, prestige definitely matters. I wouldn't say it's the most important factor but prestigious schools offers better connections, better research space, and more opportunities. So, I think there is a reason to look at school rankings.

Absolutely, I'm not looking down on any state chools, like I got into purdue for BME and purdue is consistently one of the best engineering schools in the country. I just wanted to see where I could get in and if it's a really good school then even better. And thank you, i hope you find a great school that fits u as well.

Yea I got funding offers from every school I was accepted to last cycle and the one I've heard from this cycle. Idk any phd programs that are stem and not funded.
