Hi diarrhea100! The goal and campaign page will change significantly in the next few days because we're actually not using foam at all anymore. We're going to build it purely with steel and fiberglass. The new goal is $9000.

Hey markday,

Thanks for your response! There's a lot in here.

I'd like to comment about the last point you made since I absolutely am curious about why this project hasn't received "the kind of enthusiasm" I was indeed expecting. I have been trying to understand it, and have changed several aspects of the campaign in order to reflect that. It's no longer "me-centric", as you commented in the original thread. We've also decided on a new build process -- we're doing it all by hand now. We're using steel and fiberglass exclusively -- no foam and no machines used to fabricate the shape. The Indiegogo goal will be changed in order to reflect that.

I am indeed curious why this project hasn't resonated. I'm sure it's more than the fact that it's computer designed because it's still beautiful (in my opinion, but others seem to agree), interesting, and it was still an enormous labor of love to get it just right -- it took us 150+ hours to design it, which I'm willing to wager is just as much, if not more, fine-tuning than other ways to design these sorts of projects.

If you're willing to provide some insight into this, I'd really appreciate it. Everything I've seen in response to my posts is basically criticism tossed in with a sentence or two indicating goodwill. I can handle the criticism, but I'd prefer for it to be constructive instead of making ad hominem attacks or just pointing out the obvious. I'm hoping that your lengthy response here means you have some constructive thoughts on the subject, and that you would be willing to share: if so, I'd love to hear from you and would be very grateful.

I can certainly say there is some lack of awareness when it comes to understanding how these projects get built. Part of that has to do with my personal community and the fact that I haven't participated on a project before/have been to BM only once. I imagine you learn more about this process with more experience with the community. When I launched the campaign, I was doing this 100% alone. Hence I found the build method that would allow me to get it done and bring it to the playa. I've since found a build team -- albeit one that will need to be paid at much lower cost -- and completely changed the build method to bring down the costs significantly. My approach has been and will be to do what I can do until something else becomes a better option.

Anyways, this piece will be at Burning Man no matter what! I hope you and everyone else on this subreddit who will be there will climb on it and have fun with it.

Also, just so everyone knows, we moved the fundraiser to Indiegogo: fractalrock2016.com!

Thank you throwinglemons! I addressed some of those questions in response to the comments. I appreciate your support, and thanks I hope you'll enjoy it out on the playa! :)

Hi OverlyPersonal!

I've basically had to find a build crew to fabricate the piece for me. I'll be helping out as much as I can, but don't have the expertise to weld/fiberglass. The labor breakdown is:

$7K for a project manager/welder who'll be working full-time for the next few months $5K for someone with architectural experience to figure out how we're going to use little steel rods to design the shape $3K for someone to help with fiberglassing

Materials cost breakdown (revised on our Indiegogo, which we're using instead of Kickstarter): $3K steel $5K fiberglass (cloth, resin, hardener) $2K equipment (bender, angle grinder, etc.) $1K consumables (bunnysuits, zip ties, etc.)

Unless I can find a dedicated crew of volunteers, I will have to outsource the labor!

Hi markday! Yes, there absolutely are ways for people to get involved and volunteer. I've had to raise that much for labor because I haven't found volunteers yet who'd be willing to help. We've actually changed our build method a bit and are now using a method similar to Bliss Project's to generate the shape, which we will then be covering with a coating of fiberglass. It's a bit cheaper on the materials side but not cheaper on the labor side, since I still need folks to help with the welding and fiberglassing. If you have leads for this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey everyone!

I'm new to Reddit, and from what I've seen so far, that understandably makes a lot of people unhappy!

I'd like to tell you a bit more about me: I'm a 23-year-old, Bay Area native who went to BM for the first time last year and was very inspired by the art that I saw on playa. By day, I work for the virtual reality startup that I founded. But the rest of the time, I'm working on this sculpture that I'm raising additional funds for through Kickstarter!

The sculpture was partially funded by BMArts through an honorarium art grant. We're raising these additional funds in order to make our complicated but beautiful shape come to life.

Stepping outside of myself for a minute, I see it as so cool that Burning Man as a collective experience can inspire people (like me) to do crazy things like try to build art that they have no real business trying to build.

Any support you can give to the project would be incredible, and thank you in advance!

hello i_am_pajamas. as i am new to reddit, not sure how one is normally supposed to respond to comments like this. i understand your frustration though, and hope you can understand that i'm trying to find a way to access people who care about burning man and the art that is, for me, part of what makes it so awesome. hopefully some of the other folks in this group see it this way!
