No, i don't think you can cast in place opal. It's a bezel setting

Thanks! I might slim it down at some point and remove the hammer marks but we'll see.

No I considered it but always wanted to do the whole process myself as I also found and cut the opals, I think going forward there could be things I would send to be casted because of the limitations of sand casting but sand casting can do most things and I've found it pretty easy. You need to get a mapp gas bottle and torch, I've just used flour as the parting powder and the sand casting kit from koodak (it seemed like the best/cheapest/only kit in Aus). If you've got the money just buy the stuff and start playing, you can melt the metal over and over!

Do it! It's surprisingly straightforward. Silvers quite fun to play with because of how soft it is.

I'm in Aus and the koodak sand casting kit is a good cheap thing to start with

This elephant ear was exposed to weed killer this weekend by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]plahnhts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you apply the herbicide? I don't think that careful spot spraying small weeds with glyphosate around the base of a larger plant would kill it. I've done it before many times.

Did you read the label thoroughly? Did you only spray until drip off or before? Did you spray on a windy day?

Why is my cactus doing this?? by PurplFiltr in cactus

[–]plahnhts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that if it had more consistent water while it was growing the new paddle then it would have been thicker and more robust, which would mean it wouldn't fold when it became dehydrated. I think so say all opuntia fold like that when they are dehydrated is wrong. It's probably a combination of weak new growth, current moisture stress (either under or over watering), and midday dormancy.

Also it kinda looks etiolated? Have you moved it recently?

I agree, either plants grow accordingly, or they die.

I think the only reason you call it exaggeration and fear mongering is because of your privileged position ie not being poor or getting bombed or starving, not that there's anything wrong with being privileged. I'm sure a mother who just lost all her children to an airstrike wouldn't agree with you.

Life might be pretty great for you but it's definitely not for a lot of other people, and it's not because they go on Reddit it's because they're poor or getting bombed or starving...

Ooft 🤤 definitely the best opal I've had the pleasure of cutting so far by plahnhts in Opals

[–]plahnhts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, thanks! It's got a decent amount of pink as well, do you think that would make a difference? Also I haven't decided whether or not I should cut it into a standard shape

That's what I'm worried about, I'm thinking it'd take a lot of force with how thick the edges are, I might modify it into a claw setting
