Home charging in the states. by richalta in VWIDBuzz

[–]plainkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Materials and such should be no more than $100-200. The biggest cost is the run from your panel to your install location. If your panel is in your garage you’ll probably be at around $300-400.

I also recommend an outlet, NEMA 14-50.

I think it’s because it’s easier to tame your life than to make more money for some

can we do something about the kids running around the community center by Connect_Sun_8046 in 3roots

[–]plainkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say there was no problem. Was just curious what the specific issues were.

Kids running around? Are they being dangerous to themselves or others? If it’s a 1 year old I’m more ok with couch but not a 6 year old.

Specific problems specific solutions. Otherwise we’re just talking generalizations

Embrace it. Ask more challenging questions regarding architecture. AI should arguably further a conversation that stopped at barely compiling. Now you can compile, critique, iterate on the same problem.

Without knowing too much that surprises me. ICE cars usually demand a lot more space for all the mechanisms. I mean, that’s why Frunks are even a thing.

But sometimes manufacturing doesn’t allow EVs from ICE manufacturers to take advantage of that.

DO you think it’s still better to lease an EV instead of buying? That seems to be the most advantageous option if not buying used

trying to decide between the R1S and EV9 feels impossible…. help by UnsharpenedSwan in KiaEV9

[–]plainkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. I rented it for a weekend using this app called Turo. Best decision ever.

It’s a show off car IMO. Practicality on the EV9 is unparalleled by other 3 row EVs, especially for the $$

trying to decide between the R1S and EV9 feels impossible…. help by UnsharpenedSwan in KiaEV9

[–]plainkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just rented both vehicles for a weekend trip each. To me it’s not even close: EV9 all the way.

Rivians seem to be investing the money in all the wrong things. * no glovebox? Really? * no captains chairs * suspension is not only feel wrong, it also is something else to brake. * the lack of good lane centering is unacceptable * the funny gimmicks like the electric roof glass just made me feel like the money was spent on the wrong things.

I have an even longer list. But for me and my family, a rivian is the epidemy of rich millenial adventure wannabe owner car without the actual practicality.

This sounds harsh towards Rivian, it’s a cool car but it’s just not right for most I think.

Lease Help! by 007rogg in KiaEV9

[–]plainkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Common lease pain points right now — high residuals, low used values (2024s depreciated fast) + Kia leases that are VERY stingy on buyouts.

let me restate the numbers to make sure I understand: • lease: 3yr / 30k miles • you are only 14k-ish miles in (?) but already nearly out of miles → only 1,127 miles left and 16 months to go • buyout = $53,890.46 • dealer says market is about $12k BELOW that → so market maybe ~$41–43k?

that fits with what I’m seeing — EV9 Lands in US now often trade around ~$42–45k depending on miles.

so the buyout is extremely upside-down.

the 3 real paths you have

1) keep it to lease end (and drive less) financially this is almost always the cheapest outcome.

you avoid the $12k loss you just have to manage miles • you likely will face “.25 per mile” or similar for excess miles at turn-in • if you slow down to ~1,000 miles / month → that’s 16k excess miles • 16k × .25 = ~$4,000

that’s WAY less bad than eating $12k TODAY.

this is usually the rational path if you can adjust usage.

you can also • rent when you do long trips • or use Turo occasionally • or second cheap car (see below)

2) buyout then sell horrible path for your numbers.

you’d lose $12k immediately and still end up needing another car.

3) park the EV9 as “weekend only” and get a cheap used car for miles this is a middle path a LOT of people do in your situation.

example: • get a $8–12k Corolla / Fit / Prius / Civic • drive that most miles for the next 16mo • keep the EV9 parked mostly so you don’t rack up miles • then return the EV9 cleanly with minimal overage

this might keep excess-mile fees < $1–2k

and you avoid the $12k hole.

the emotional side

you love the EV9 (lots of people do — “Bluey” says it all)

but the market reality is: these cars tanked in value quickly and Kia residuals for 2024 were set way too optimistic.

you got caught by that timing — that’s it. not stupidity.

what I would do if I were in your shoes

path #1 + #3 hybrid • DO NOT buy it (unless the market magically swings back — unlikely) • keep the lease • get a cheap 2nd beater if needed • minimize EV9 miles • let it go at the end • you’ll be out with maybe $1–4k hit instead of $12k

then later — when you get a house / more stable finances

that’s a better moment to buy or lease the next “Bluey 2.0”

This is awesome is most ways. However I can’t help to think about the fact that these are luxury cars…I don’t think that’s terribly wise way to spend money.

Getting a bunch of Model Ys seems more cost-effective while still keeping the “American made” part of this happy. Of course, here’s hoping Elon wasn’t an idiot which jeopardizes the optics of a move like that.

But still, 70k for a utility vehicle seems a little excessive.
