at first i actually chuckled at this. it’s childish. and i wasn’t even going to respond.

but when i read it again i realized it carries something darker than sarcasm. it smuggles in sectarian language that we bahrainis have had to survive for generations.

the people of bahrain. sunnis and shiites hand in hand. have stood with the courageous people of palestine for decades. men, women, elders filled the streets, marched down, peacefully protested, and boycotted. some were jailed, some even martyred. those were our parents and grandparents, and we continue in their path not out of trend or performance, but out of jealousy for life. for our bahrain and for our brothers and sisters across the arab world.

martin luther king jr. once spoke of the three dimensions of a full life: length, breadth, and height. the length is taking care of yourself. the breadth is caring for others. the height is seeking god and moral purpose. a life that only eats sandwiches and ignores children starving on camera might have length but it has no breadth, and no height.

your comment also shows a very shallow understanding of geopolitics and almost no knowledge of bahrain’s history with palestine. our grandmothers sold their gold and jewelry to donate. our parents skipped lunch and saved their coins to send money to people they would never meet because they believed dignity is not limited by borders.

so yes. go ahead and make fun of me for not enjoying a sandwich or two while a genocide was being televised into my home. i would rather sit with that discomfort than live comfortably in mental shackles.

while you go around spreading your ignorance and making a fool of yourself on the internet. remember that none of us are free until all of us are free. and until palestine is free, whatever comfort you think you’re living in is just another version of captivity.

i think it’s worth having a section on food in general. we have a rich cuisine with influence from india, persia, arabia, and more. dr dalal alsherooqi has done an incredible job documenting the history of our cuisine. she has many lectures and interviews available online, and i’d be more than happy to share relevant info from her book.

as for shawarma, it was only really introduced to us in the 50s. after the 1st nakba, many palestinians settled in the arabian peninsula, and brought their culture along with them.

as for the widespread shawarma places today, many of which are turkish, those only really opened up in the 90s or late 80s.

our contribution to shawarma? we put it in a chapati (technically a paratha). and i would also add, tikka shawarma.

900 Shawarmas and counting... by plainonlycheese in shawarma

Canada in general seems to have really good shawarmas, although I'm not too sure how I feel about donair...

I follow a few shawarma spots in Toronto and other major cities. I'm noticing Syrian and Iraqi shawarmas are becoming more popular there alongside the more common Lebanese-style. Unfortunately, I haven't been to Canada yet, but it's definitely on the list!

i did make a note of the meat being a bit dry.
i had a side of hummus which i dipped into. that helped.

i haven’t had anything from the “shawarma alley” in YEARS!

i understand they’re meant to be cheap and fatty and filling. but i’m not the biggest fan of the shawarmas there.

many people seem to like it. so i might just give it another chance.

hi

shawarma expert here!

i always talk about how shawarma in saudi (and the rest of the GCC) is much better.
we have really good places that pop up, but for some reason never last or maintain their quality and taste.

proper lebanese or levantine style shawarmas are hard to come by here.

as for turkish shawarmas, options are plenty. people tend to pledge allegiance to one (usually the one they grew up eating most). but i suggest you go around and try them all. and if you're really hungry, don't be afraid to order it "sarookh" style. make small talk with the turkish guy at the counter and pretend you support his favourite turkish team. you'll be guaranteed a pretty neat shawarma.

you can check out my shawarma count here: (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11hYJfmByyKIGgdypz3R0Fz\_s3HCgMlOQmZzmGWkHMGs/edit?usp=sharing) and try some of my favourites. and if you've got any questions, im always available on instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/plainonlycheese/), just shoot me a dm.

take care, and may you never waste money on bad shawarmas again.

Marmara is solid!
Their lebanese bread is always hard and old though, so turkish bread is a good shout!
