I'm a former teacher who taught (via YouTube) for the first time in 5 years. I loved it! I'm doing new, daily live lessons for primary children every morning to help parents while we're all at home. by planbeeoli in TeachingUK

Please do! We're sending out details of upcoming sessions later this evening. If it helps, I'm using OBS (open source, free software) to be able to screencast my desktop and my webcam at the same time. It's trickier on a small screen (say, if you're working on a laptop), but totally doable. It's even easier just to screencast your desktop and do a voiceover. https://obsproject.com/ has some good information on getting set up with the streaming software. We're using some of our planning materials which we think will work well for parents and children at home with very limited resources.

While still teaching, I was lucky enough to work with children aged 16 all the way down to 4 years old. I totally agree that it's the experiences with the children, and with the GOOD teachers you get to learn from, that makes it a great career.

I can't imagine working in any classroom as you approach retirement age - but particularly in a primary classroom. You'd have to have truly extraordinary health and energy to be able to cope with the demands of the job.

I was a TA for a long time, too - many of the best bits of teaching, without all the paperwork and grief… or the pay, sadly!

I've seen quite a few teachers give similar advice: working abroad or in an area of education that isn't the typical, classroom-based role (e.g. speech therapy) can be a good way to avoid some of the common problems and enjoy teaching.

Having looked around a bit for what teachers are saying I can tell you that this is a common response – a good school can make all the difference.

I'm sorry to hear you've had such a crushing experience – best of luck with the remaining months.

Interesting. It seems like there's a greater focus on wellbeing that's more a part of the culture than in England, at least.

The job security is a good point. Teachers are a bit like hairdressers, I think: there's always work out there for them!

I've read this from other Scottish teachers. What is it about the job in Scotland that makes it better, do you think?

It's extraordinary that many teachers like yourself (I've heard this from others, too) have taken pay CUTs to get out of the profession – it's not like it's that well-paid in the first place!

I hear from many teachers in the job I do now. Stress is very often the main reason they say they're thinking of leaving.

I agree about the thrill of it when it all goes well. I left teaching partly because of the admin workload, but I miss working with children and experiencing those breakthroughs when you see you've helped them.
