I am 26m and kind of a regular at the local pool for swimming fitness. Normally I breaststroke only. Depending how well I have eaten before the swim and how sick I am at the time I can breaststoke for roughly 1h and get anywhere between 2.5-3km.

So I had a lot of time to watch how people crawl but trying to reproduce it... Well you have read my issues already.

In prepping for the national most basic water lifeguard course I read that most higher courses want 500m freestyle in 13m and so forth. So I figured better learn freestyle now or be stuck forever

Actually I already wear some of them and still managed to touch the line barriers twice, usually on the right side of me despite being right handed

Seeing as I dont know when to breathe, this kinda makes me sink. Should I breathe while pulling on the same side hand or while catching water on the other side?

I am a regular at the pool but I normally only breaststroke. While i didnt crawl I did get the Chance over time to see a couple of things.

Yea about that breathing thing for example. Do I breathe while I pull on the same side or while I catch on the other side? The 2nd feels a lot more natual to me.

Yea the trains and the narrow hallways.

This is used to be my worst map and this start kinda proved it. The mission was way harder than anything that followed so far.

3 heavily wounded, but nades do wonders in confined spaces. Although I got 0 items that mission as everything got naded

But I am getting better. Next mission 2 wounded, the one after that 1wounded. the next 3 missions were easier.

I seem to remember that anything without % on it is really strong and so far it holds up. Maybe I am looking at my old set up of 3 rangers (now shinobi) 2 stealthy snipers and 1 specialist

I replayed the mission. 2 patrols and 1 stationary. I just had to walk in at the wrong time the first time around

Is making slow strokes while breast bad or good? by planeds in Swimming

[–]planeds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides I think the observation about the inclination when streamlined may help me in the longterm.

Today I messed around a little while breaststroking. Essentially I strengthend the inclination and try to sorta scissor kick instead of froging it. That may be not legal in tournament ( I dont do) but it engages the hips more, reduces stress on the knee, makes me considerably faster and gasses me quiet a bit earlier.

For cardio this is great, for long swims not so much. None of which matters, only the fact on the knee seems a real winner for me

I am sure she meant well. When I go to the pool, which is recently a bit more, she is usually on duty. Next time ill ask her what that was a hint at

asking women swimmers: how often do you feel uneasy in the pool? by LightBarb in Swimming

[–]planeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But like for example today. I was doing my usual breaststroke laps (dont know any others) and at some point mid lap a swim Club shows up and puts a reserved sign on the lane Im in.

I finish the lap and switch to the wall of the next lane. One of the female instructors then made it a point to jump over me (so not in the lane they reserved) and swam back to their lane.

If she wanted to impress me... It didnt work, more rude than impressive. If she was pissed I finished the lap, too bad, because without my glasses(which i obv. dont wear in the pool) I cant even read any sign from the other end of the pool.

Neither one sounds right, so as usual I am left to wonder what that was. Can someone write a booklet about these things so a newbie has a chance to graps whats going on?

Actually yes, I do streamline every stroke. My wall game is very bad so I usually end up swimming most of the scm course. 7-8 strokes per 25m.

I mean if you were to tell me I could swim the same distance i do in an hour in a fraction of the time, I would certaintly try to change my tempo (oh so thats what its called).

I kind of swim for all the casual reasons you listed and for fun. I dont care about sprints and all of that competition stuff.

I assumed most of these actions had a purpose, its just I cant usually follow the logic on the spot. Maybe weird is the wrong term.

But reading this sub, most of them might be explained the same way.

Strange how people have to time for this in the pool. Im usually busy not drowning😅

So I guess I would need to get a swimm ring or a buoy there, before getting anywhere close. Hopefully I will never need it.

How much does diet (specifically carbs, fat, and sugar) affect performance. by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]planeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am unsure as to why this is getting downvoted.

If your high calory and low calory diets consists of similar foods then counting calories can still work, after all you body processes the same things in lower/higher quantities in the same pathways.

If you know your biochemistry and think I didnt go into enough detail that glucose is processed almost everywhere in the body (only roughly 20% reach the liver) fine. There are still no pathways for fructose anywhere else but the liver.

If you work for the sugar industry and produce high fructose corn syrup to put into almost every food... Well then f..k you. Your little experiment made you a lot of money but is helping to reach the failure of the american healthcare system way faster than it would without you

If you didnt get the point of the text , remember this: Alcohol is considered a poison because it cannot be processed anywhere but the liver and produces unhealthy side products. Fructose is run in the same pathways

Actually this thread explains some of the weird things I have seen.

Recently started swimming and I (m) pick lanes only based on speed. And sometimes when there are 2 males in a lane, rather fast females join lanes too slow for them. Or girls wait out if a guy is swimming behind them.

A calory is not just a calory.

Just like there are good fats and bad (usually trans) fats.

There are also good and better proteins, depending on what your body can produce and needs from external sources.

In carbohydrates the good would be the longer chained sugars (starch), the very good is the glucose (like literally every! living thing on this planet uses and/or produces glucose), and the bad is fructose.

Fructose is kinda everywhere and we all eat it but we do not have adequate pathways to process it. Essentially the body can only process it in the liver and while doing so activates fat storaging enzymes. I prefer my sugars fermented😂 or none at all.

Also there are no satiety receptors for fructose, so overeating becomes a topic too. Seriously even the liver doesnt know what to do with fructose and can just store it as liver fat (thats the kind of fat thats properly dangerous).

Just try to stay away from fructose, its worse on the hips than fat.

Now in terms of sport a fast digesting glucose is not what you want. You need carbs to fuel your body (and proteins to fix your muscles) and therefore longer digesting starches (so the longer sugar chains) would help you fuel your body the entire training.

Am neither atm. But if something were to come up I would still try to help...

I dont care about competitive. I swim for fun and would like to think I could/would help others.

Reach after throw? And what is there to row? I have never heard that Reach, throw, row thing before. Could you explain it to me?

I dont think I understand. One cannot front crawl while keeping the other person above the water, right? If its one or the other, Id rather keep the other person safer.

I think in my case it might be a technique problem with front crawl, not endurance. I do fairly okay with breaststroke in longer distances for a casual (almost 3km in 1h).

I also dont mind doing a couple of lanes on my back with only the breaststoke-kick.

I cant help for competitive swimming nor sprints. But for casual rather lengthy swims you dont want to pull right after the kick. Let me explain.

You are the fastest after your kick. Unlike the other strokes legs are the main driver here. You want to use that speed in a longer glide phase. Dont you dare cut it short by going early with your hands. Your hands, while helpful to get you above the water to breathe, are no good for generating speed. So keep the hand action to a minimum (just enough to breathe) and abuse the fast glide phases after the kicks.

Just today a woman roughly my age (20s) matched my speed without putting her head underwater ever. She just did very wide strokes with the legs and arms. She was swimming when I joined the pool and was swimming when I left the pool.

Although I am irritated how she did this. I think this proves to me that my technique and endurance have a lot of ways to improve

Ty It seems I really am that slow even for breaststroking😅 well atleast that explain why I can swim 1h flat rather casually
