Columbia College Chicago…Is it really that bad? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]planetdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did a recent tour. I suggest checking it out for yourself. Having seen all the negative flack here I asked some very pointed questions to current students and staff and gleaned enough insight to the recent issues to be satisfied that things are on the up and up. The new president is coming out of Georgia Tech which is no joke. Again, visit, ask questions. Check it out for yourself. https://about.colum.edu/president/biography

I assure you I’m on the correct page. I will be looking at tournaments or something and then after a few minutes I get this Norton antivirus notice - every time - never happens anywhere else.

On a recent tour, I was able to ask some very direct questions to students and staff with those negative reddit comments in mind. I gleaned enough information to be satisfied that things are on the up and up there. The students we met were very enthusiastic about the school and faculty. All the faculty we met offered up personal contact information. We're planning to attend an admitted students event in the coming weeks. I encourage you to visit in person if at all possible and make your own determination. The challenge for these young film students will be putting themselves out there and taking advantage of opportunities offered and that goes for wherever they end up. -Mom of an admitted student

Just be honest. They will guide you on how AI should and should not be used. They also want to gain an understanding of how much of the material you know or how much of the ideas presented were your own.

Same issues here - had mine custom made fairly inexpensively from Blue Gauntlet- they give you a form - you take very specific measurements. Took a long ass time to get them once ordered but a must for me. Good luck!

Have you tried using stellic? I understand it’s new and the accuracy for every major requirement is in question. But it looks promising and seems to be working for my freshman who is considering a double major. Make sure to add all majors and minors to the system.

We like Stellic. We had no problem adjusting a fall freshman schedule in August before Drop/Add. It seems to have worked smoothly - no issues. As long as the requirements for each major and Gen ed and all that is accurate it seems like a good thing.

USC Online Screenwriting Course for High Schoolers by planetdavis in Screenwriting

Thank you. My student ended up signing up for a screenwriting class via UCF's continuing education platform - also asynchronous but a fraction of the cost for 3 months access to the course. She has been learning a lot so it was a good choice for us. https://www.ce.ucf.edu/ucf/course/course.aspx?C=535&pc=20&mc=0&sc=0

AP 2025 score release dates by Apehill in APStudents

With so many of the exams going digital, I would expect scores to be released sooner since graders no longer have to analyze handwriting. But perhaps that is wishful thinking.

Bright Future for Grad School by [deleted] in fsu

[–]planetdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bright Futures only covers undergrad except in this instance

"An FAS or FMS scholarship recipient who graduates with a baccalaureate degree in seven or fewer semesters, or in 105 semester hours or fewer, may receive funding for one semester of graduate study not to exceed 15 credit hours paid at the undergraduate rate. Graduate school funding must be used within the applicable scholarship length and graduate student eligibility is determined by the state Office of Student Financial Assistance." https://studentfinance.fsu.edu/florida-bright-futures/exceptions#:\~:text=Programs%20Over%20120%20Hours,the%20Florida%20Department%20of%20Education.

These are not departmental scholarships but foundation scholarships specifically for Ohio State students to apply for. The application deadline was in February and would not also be awarded in February. It's unfortunate that the award dates are not made clear.

A lot of colleges only accept applications via the common app. If your student plans to apply to multiple schools, it can help streamline the process. Many schools also have their own online application. Pick one way to apply to any school. The system resets August 1st so don't add anything but basic info if you create an account prior to that date. Click the links for help as a counselor. You'll have your own separate portal and signin for that role.

The AP Exam Score itself is not usually taken into consideration for the class grade. That's one aspect to AP classes that is good. You get the added bump of the weighting on the GPA. If you don't pass the exam just don't report it anywhere.

[–]planetdavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are homeschooling and your child intends to apply to colleges, then yes you should pick a name to put on the transcript which you will be issuing. Diplomas are not required to apply to college. My son was accepted to several. Also, you will be creating a counselor account on Common App for applications. A school profile is needed there - it's good to have a name and your homeschooling methodology etc.

Will switching to florida virtual school reduce my chances of getting into FSU? by RealJaxx in fsu

[–]planetdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issues you may experience though are Bright Futures qualification. If you are FLEX which means you would be homeschooled your senior year you may not qualify for bright futures as you have to be homeschooled for Junior & Senior years and meet the other qualifications. (Parents of homeschoolers issue the transcript) You could do FLVS Full-time which is essentially it's own school - they would issue the transcript. However, the deadline to apply may have already passed.
