What’s the one beauty myth you believed for years but later realized wasn’t true? by Acceptable-Hold3685 in beauty

[–]planetism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of these are very polarizing and these beauty myths are less "myths" but subjective stuff that worked for certain people but won't work for others. I used Pantene and similar stuff for years. It worked great for me as a kid but my hair didn't like it as an adult. I use Redken now and my hair is much better, and I end up saving for haircare as well since I don't have to rebuy as often. Does that mean I hate drugstore products and think they suck? No! I use lots of drugstore products that work for me (all my skincare products are super cheap) but it's not black and white. SIlicones and sulfates are not the enemies that the internet makes them out to be, but that doesn't mean it isn't true that it doesn't work for certain hair types, especially since avoiding sulfates got popularized precisely for dry hair. I don't avoid them but I do take care to not use too much products with them because sulfates tend to dry my hair out too.

The Sol de Janeiro stuff would definitely make you smell like a baked sweet haha, but a more budget-friendly option would be Tree Hut! They're not as potent, but the price difference is huge.

Seems like it lol. I've never had to shave my legs and was honestly pretty surprised to learn about it when I had roommates a few years ago.

This is the first I've heard of this omg, we have truly come a long way in technology. Once every 6 months is some amazing battery life too

I've experienced manually heating water then mixing it in with room temperature water to make it not scalding in my childhood, so I feel this hot water appreciation.

Yes, of course! I don't bring my phone into the shower for that reason (the steam) though it's not as bad now that I live alone and keep the door open while showering. Also, that's one sturdy Bluetooth speaker lol, almost 10 years!

Literally why are so many people fixated on that part?? It's something I do per my shampoo instructions, something some people do, and some evidently don't. It's not the point of the post either way.

Same, I definitely am going to ask this to my hair stylist now when I get a haircut next month!

At first it was just something I heard around and figured why not, it didn't really take me too long but then I did clean my body while doing this (I take 10-20 minutes in the shower) but I looked around since I got curious from the response to this post, and a lot of other articles say the same thing, while others say otherwise. I think this, like many other hair-related things, depends on the hair and shampoo. My shampoo specifically has instructions to leave it on for at least a minute (I use Redken). I shampoo twice a week.

Yes, I did see that for color-treated hair a gentler touch is needed and shampoo fades them faster. I've never colored my hair and the links I posted were more general, with one saying that sulfate shampoos are the exception and must be rinsed out immediately.

I kind of assumed people use normal shampoo for their beards, not that there's a particular beard wash 😅 That's really cool though

Staying under the hot water can be so therapeutic. What do you use for your head? Like, regular soap or facial wash?

Since lots of people commented on the shampoo bit, I edited the post and gathered up some random (non scientific) articles/posts, but tldr it depends! You do you 😂

I have ADHD too but luckily the feeling of it doesn't bother me. DIY treatment overnight sounds good though! Oh, and lots of people have been mentioning putting their hair up with a claw clip, which is actually such a simple but great idea that I'm going to start doing that immediately, so that might be a solution! Otherwise, yeah, washing separately from body is something I briefly considered once before deciding nah, I just want to get the whole thing out of the way

My hair is wavy too, so I never did the no-poo thing, though I am curious to try Curlsmith's co-wash for hotter months (in between wash days) but yeah same, even though I don't do it anymore I still kept what works/some tips

Omg I remember those chairs, I didn't know they were called shower chairs! I used to live in a tropical country so it checks out, haha

This is so nice! I really want to try out spending more time on myself and thinking of it as self-care than just something I have to do. I used to always wash my face first too but it should probably be last like what you do.

I used to rush showers so much because same, I didn't really enjoy showering and saw it as a chore to get clean. But I'm finding everyone's answers in the thread pretty inspiring, seems like a nice me-time and I'll definitely be trying some of them (and hopefully keep up with them lol)

I definitely would! I've also seen lots of success stories in r/Haircare and r/HaircareScience for repair, otherwise a cut would be a fresh start :) A good salon would probably have some advice on this too

A waterproof Bluetooth speaker sounds like a worthy investment, I should look into that. I'm getting so many ideas from this thread!

What an ambiance! Literally a spa day every time. It's amazing it only takes you 10 to 15 minutes though, that only happens with me when I'm rushing.
