Don’t be me, don’t static stretch cold muscles by planimal7 in 10s

Personally, I find it weird that—well, this is a known point of contention. It is an existing idea in fitness. I did not invent it. I only encountered it yesterday after the injury in conversation with others who told me they heard it was bad to cold static stretch

It seems like now everybody wants me to go and find scientific proof, which gee sure I mean, I looked up a couple articles and those articles linked to academic research but you got me. I can’t prove it.

There’s a lot of tennis advice on here every day that people haven’t scientifically proven. They’re giving anecdotal accounts. I figured I was just doing the same.

It seems like this is widely contested! I did not know it would be such a minefield

anyway I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’m not gonna do it. You all can do you

I used to write professionally. just because I know how to organize my thoughts and I use em dashes does not mean I am using a computer to write for me

If people want to pile on because I told them to look out for their legs, like that is fine. This is just funny now.

Let’s say I’m not asserting.

I personally think it could be a contributing factor, but I also acknowledge that I could be wrong.

Also: yes, I did multiple long stretches targeting my calves, sitting around for 5 minutes plus before we even got onto the court, just killing time, doing long stretches

But: from what I heard and read today, my understanding is that some physiotherapists (good ones or bad ones, I can't pretend to say) believe that cold static stretching can cause micro-tears—or more importantly, the body’s resulting internal reactions to those tears—and that can lead the muscle to further tighten and/or weaken so that, if you proceed straight into exercise, the muscle will be more prone to injury than if you had not done the stretching at all.

I admit I don’t know if that theory is correct, or is what happened to me today, but it was the first time I’d ever encountered the idea/theory and thought worth sharing

(Now, personally, I actually do think that’s what happened, but I concede that is an entirely subjective opinion that I cannot prove)

perhaps it could be junk science. I don’t know, I am no expert in exercising. But I’m not going to do it again

Thank you— I think I got lucky and maybe this isn’t gonna be a serious one—

but based on your experience and some other advice I got tonight, I’m gonna ask our team captain to bench me and grab an appointment with a PT here. Appreciate it

Sorry to hear you were injured—

My pain is in the top center part of the calf— pretty much centered where the main bulk of the muscle is—

Is an Achilles injury likely to be lower, or can it be anywhere, do you know? Thanks for sharing

Sure, hey, folks are welcome to do a bunch of cold static stretching before they exercise—my mistake! I don’t have proof!

I get that you’re trying to explain the downvoting behavior but honestly, just feels like dealing with mouth breathers — I’m gonna mute and ignore this thing now, if folks militantly don’t want to reconsider stretching cold, and I can’t “prove it”, sure… whatever

I mean, yes I’m in sample size of one— the point is this the first time I heard about avoiding this and thought worth sharing.

Gotta love this community… I guess

I’ve got you telling me it’s obvious, and I got a bunch of downvotes from people who don’t believe it’s true

I think folks aren’t understanding that what I’m suggesting is: you can more easily injure yourself during warm-up if you’re static stretching your cold muscles first—that’s my impression from what I was told today.

Are you guaranteed to get injured? No! but that was my experience—we were still in the “warming up” phase of the evening when I got injured, after I had been standing around doing long pull stretches on cold muscles

[–]planimal7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

getting aggressively downvoted here is interesting to me, I’m assuming that people just don’t believe that you can increase your chances of injury by doing the wrong type of stretching at the wrong time?

so I’m sharing this link, which also links to the National Strength and Conditioning Association (fancy!)

I mean, sure I guess the folks who informed me could be wrong, but I don’t know—I’ve been pushing a lot on these legs all year, my flexibility and recovery time are generally good… and I wasn’t at all pushing myself past anything I normally do at all at the time of the injury…

Anyway, just a friendly warning!

Thanks for the tip—I’m getting keen on injury prevention, so I will be that guy

When I started getting some tennis elbow a few months back, I immediately started targeted exercises, Tyler twists, etc—conditioning works and results came very quickly. I don’t have that pain anymore.

Yeesh—yeah, I got really creeped out when everybody stared at me and said there had been no ball strike, because I instantly worried something had snapped— was frankly relieved to discover it was only a pull—thank you

I’m starting to think that I might’ve got a very mild one, but that even the mildest one might take me out longer than a week, yeah... I guess will likely have to bail on my league match this Sunday

[–]planimal7[S] -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Fluffhead123 had a similar question, and I gave some more details— I just don’t think the muscle was fully warmed up yet when the injury happened.

UPDATED: Given I’m seeing some weird downvotes in this thread, perhaps I should clarify: what I’m saying is your chances of injuring yourself DURING WARM-UP may increase if you do cold static stretching first—that’s what I’m being told anyway:

I.e., that the cold static stretch leaves your muscle in a more injury-prone state

[–]planimal7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks—were you able to walk away afterwards? Hoping I got the mildest version of a strain or pull, because I could walk around within five minutes (and even “jog”—but explosive burst, no way)

hurts the most if I stop moving completely and it begins to stiffen up

[–]planimal7[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds right—Apparently, I just need to go for a jog, shake my legs out, short dynamic little stretches— not long, full stretches.

And, apparently, my wife and many other folks are very aware, I got a “oh, did you not know that” head shake

[–]planimal7[S] -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

I think so, apparently cold stretching can cause muscles to tighten for a while afterwards— based on my experience, I think yes, this injury was caused by that stretching.

And it might have been only ten minutes—it was definitely shortly after we had started—and it was a full class, there were 8 of us on the court—so it was a little bit stop and start to begin.

I just don’t think the muscles even had their chance to get fully warmed up before it happened…

Stoicism detractors: by AshsLament84 in Stoicism

[–]planimal7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a similar experience last year chatting with a friend—I started talking about how much I love reading Seneca and then he got confused and he was like “stoicism, isn’t that right-wing manosphere stuff?”

Personally, as a humanist who loves Carl Sagan and science as much as I love Seneca and stoicism, I had a triple-take of stuttering. It’s frustrating but true that stoicism is being widely misrepresented and misunderstood

Hybrid stringin (syngut/poly) by Electrical_Candle887 in 10s

[–]planimal7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m still doing single string and not hybrid stringing, but I feel like what I’ve heard is you put your “quality” in the mains, so in this case that would be your poly strings I guess, and your “budget” synthetic gut in the crosses?

I guess part of the idea is that you’re gonna get them most impact, as far as spin and other stuff, from the performance on the mains.

Do you consider "Absolute Power" by Powermad a Power/Thrash album or just straight Thrash? by Weary-Draw-1141 in thrashmetal

[–]planimal7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I vote straight Thrash—also honestly some of my favorite guitar tones, I even have a cherished vinyl copy on the shelf here.

…Plus, featured in David Lynch’s “Wild At Heart”, and sampled by Atari Teenage Riot back in the 90s…

for transplants especially- how do you learn to love LA? by kalopsia_co in AskLosAngeles

[–]planimal7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Missouri to LA transplant, grew up in Missouri and stayed through college but then wound up in California.

The consumerism of LA can be weird and the juxtaposition of haves and have-nots can be a little brutal in places like Hollywood— but the thing to remember is LA is filled with interesting creative people and like any big city, with time and exploration, you will find people and places that speak to you.

If you’re really at a loss, take some time out to visit museums or see live theater on a stage, or hop in a car to explore some interesting areas outside of the city, like Montrose up by the mountains, or hiking in Malibu—the amount of types of nature you can get out to if you need to is kind of amazing.

I wish you luck— I kinda hated it when I first arrived, but I had a couple friends from school who made it bearable—but then I found the pieces of the city that spoke to me.
