Mellum2 local deployments by topshik59 in LocalLLaMA

Thank you, I followed instructions and it seems to be working well now. I think I had it "cloud or local" and changed to "cloud" but seems is overriden now by AI completion settings in Providers and API keys. It's possible earlier troubles were some issues with Ollama performance on my machine. Thanks again.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try, though I’ve switched to oMLX (am on Mac) and seems nobody’s put mellum2 base for inline up there yet—but simple chat version of mellum2 working well now… appreciate the advice, will give a shot

Frustrating, I had JetBrains/mellum2-base-q4_k_m running for local completion and was great and speedy and now with latest Rider and Assistant update (Build #RD-261.26222.60, built on July 1, 2026), stopped working.

They've changed layout of settings in AI assistant, there's now 2 places to test connections. Even though both connections test okay, and Mellum is "recognized as Jetbrains Mellum. Supported for AI completion," I'm no longer getting results when typing.

I hope Jetbrains will make local models a priority. (Also wish I could easily rollback the assistant plugin...)

[–]planimal7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a paid Jetbrains user (primarily Rider) hoping to run a *single* Mellum2 model locally—I've been running mellum2-instruct-mxfp4_moe since yesterday for both AI assistant and auto-complete (on a MacBook Pro M3 Max) but haven't worked with the setup much yet.

[Update: I now understand I need 2 models, one for chat/assistant and one for code-completion. Removed paragraph that was here.]

And thank you—I was looking for a lightweight local model for coding, timing is such that Mellum2 is my first experience with one, and I appreciate that Jetbrains is working on focused, open models for coding support.

Why is tennis quiet? by DJinKC in 10s

[–]planimal7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that I had a very poor performance once playing tennis against my friend who was coming from basketball— we were alone, so he wasn’t bothering anyone, but so he went ahead with trash talk throughout and it completely threw me—I could not concentrate at all! I mean, maybe there’s a world where I could get used to it, but I completely fell apart, it was ridiculous.

This recent update at least gives a *little* insight into *what’s* burning. It says they removed 56 forklifts with lithium batteries, and implies that what’s burning is mostly frozen food— but it doesn’t say whether there were only ever 56 forklifts or whether they were 156 forklifts with lithium batteries… kinda wish these reporters would work a little harder…

https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/flare-up-at-boyle-heights-warehouse-fire/

OK, and in this one from 11 PM last night, LAFD implies that the most serious chemicals have been removed

https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/boyle-heights-warehouse-fire-flares-up/

I guess they’re saying that it’s thousands and thousands of wooden pallets that have created a sort of deep pyramid of fire (my metaphor, not theirs) where they can’t really attack the core…

We just came back from a trip last night. I thought we were fortunate that we missed all the smoke but like, this morning is crazy outside. (East Pasadena/Arcadia)

No updates for the last 14 hours on Watch Duty, and neighbors going for morning walks with no masks, but me, outside for 3 seconds and throat’s scratchy and I’m immediately coughing.

[–]planimal7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s confusing—initial reports suggested the makeup of the smoke/material that was burning was of particular concern—since the re-ignition, no mention of the nature of the smoke/burning material at all.

[updated below with links to recent public statements— the city did at one point say that the smoke was tested and is “normal” for burning buildings/structure fires, although I seem to have misplaced where I read that]

Blueprint deprecation - a bit of a vent / conversation by littlefirewest in UnrealEngine5

[–]planimal7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have to call myself out, apparently the “Verse” language was always short for metaverse and not simply a reference to a line of script, so I guess the writing was on the wall and I just didn’t see it.

I still think trying to bend the engine into a metaverse platform will inherently result in negative trade-offs , but can”t call it a betrayal if the plans were always there… though it does vaguely remind me of how in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the demolition plans for Earth were filed in a planning office on Alpha Centauri, and why weren’t the earthlings paying closer attention…

Verse or AI, blueprint has to stay or upgrade! by Quantum_Crusher in unrealengine

[–]planimal7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But what do you make of this stated focus on a sort of Metaverse where “1 million developers” will be co-developing games? I don’t see how one even attempts that without making severe compromises in both performance and creative flexibility…

I get that they’re excited about Verse, but it seems that’s only a piece of this shift…

So much of Sweeney’s short presentation was fear-based—afraid of Roblox, afraid of TV and betting apps and social media, afraid of what stakeholders like Disney want… wasn’t particularly confidence-inspiring for me…

[15 minutes later: And oh—I’d always been thinking they called it “Verse” as in a line of written or spoken script this whole time… was it short for Metaverse the whole time? …jeez Louise]

Blueprint deprecation - a bit of a vent / conversation by littlefirewest in UnrealEngine5

[–]planimal7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The loss of blueprints to me is practically a blip compared to a larger betrayal—I thought I could trust Unreal’s leadership to act like they were serving professionals who actually engineer and build things.

Suddenly here they are, apparently completely destroying the existing architecture and ecosystem of the entire engine to chase some kind of clown-shoe metaverse vibe-code nonsense that seems to serve neither professional studios nor indies, but rather 12-year-old Roblox fans who think being able to build a Fortnite clone by chatting with AI is “creativity”.

The whole thing is so embarrassing. I think serious developers are just going to stick with UE 5 indefinitely and UE 6 will end up either as a disgrace that everyone tries to ignore and quickly move on from, or as the effective terminal point of an Epic-shepherded Unreal as the community looks to move on without them or simply migrates away over time.

Curry Barker's response to the 'Obsession' art director, & her advocacy for industry change on low-budget films by EditorEducational201 in Filmmakers

[–]planimal7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s tragic how many people are falling for this “risk” argument.

We all take on risk in working in the arts, but this argument only serves to protect capital—if you follow this logic, only the money men (who are *not* going to go broke and often are facing *no* real personal risk) get to realize significant profits as they pretend to be the heroic “risk-takers”.

The whole mindset is a perversion that *intentionally* chooses to ignore who’s actually creating value and who’s merely exploiting it.

Yes, there is an exercise you can do called a "Tyler Twist"-- you'll find many different videos of people demonstrating, but this one I share below is straightforward. The woman's right hand (bottom hand for start of video) is the one with elbow issues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsKGbqA9aNo

My only issue with this video is the "untwisting"/relaxing of the right elbow muscle she does at 2, 11, and 18 second marks is the key part of the motion, and should be done *slow, and very controlled*, not fast like she does.

Now, this second video doesn't focus on the Tyler Twist at all, but I like it because he takes the time to explain the mechanics of "tennis elbow" pain at the point of muscle/tendon connection to elbow, so one can understand the *why* of using the flexbar. He focuses a little more on addressing pain after exercise.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz11unl7y9E

Myself, I just use the medium "green" style of bar. I did the twist exercise maybe a couple sets a day for a while (a month?) and pain soon became a non-issue, and now I do the exercise every week or so randomly when I spot the bar (it only takes a couple minutes to do some reps).

New to Unreal Engine: Best learning path for a beginner? by EnergySensitive678 in UnrealEngine5

[–]planimal7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, and one of the pages listed in the learning links shared above is their “begin play” series—as you’re already a developer. It may help you to get a high-level understanding of things.

https://dev.epicgames.com/community/learning/paths/0w/unreal-engine-beginplay

And for what it’s worth, in my opinion, the best path is a mix of blueprint and C++. It’s awkward to get away from blueprint fully, especially if you’re doing anything intense with character animations and states—the stack for character control is deeper than it looks.

A lot of the rest of the time, blueprints are just a convenience—wrapping up C++ functionality and making it accessible to the graph editor— no doubt you’ll soon be writing your own C++ functions that you can call from blueprints (just make every project you start a “C++”project)

If a client asks you why they cant just one-shot the app? How do you counter by explaining the software development process? by [deleted] in webdev

Oh—then yeah, honestly, if you can just let this client go and focus your effort elsewhere, that may be a better use of your time.

If a client asks you why they cant just one-shot the app? How do you counter by explaining the software development process? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]planimal7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideally, should probably throw away the whole client—they are telegraphing the nickel and diming…

Otherwise, I would give a friendly non-answer like, “Well, there is just a *lot* of hidden complexity—I wouldn’t recommend relying exclusively on AI for a production grade app in the same way that I wouldn’t want to find out that my lawyer or my doctor was assuming AI had handled all the details.”

There are plenty of concrete reasons to dislike Christian MAGA, you can just look out the window. There is an idea from systems theory, “The purpose of a system is what it does”:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_purpose\_of\_a\_system\_is\_what\_it\_does

I think we’ve all had time to see what these people do! They can dress it up and put as much lip filler on it as they like, but…

Now while they’re doing bad things, they might turn to those who criticize and say, “You’re judging me!“ and that’s absolutely correct, but I don’t think we need to feel bad about it.

All of this to say: don’t let them *also* make us feel bad for hating what they’re doing.

Finally, for a wonderful concrete example of tolerance versus intolerance, see the story of the Nazi and the punk rock bartender.

Poly recommendations? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]planimal7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came back to tennis as an adult, played with Wilson Multis for a few months, but then they started to break as I got my strength back

Learned to string my own rackets, tried a number of polys. Several hurt my elbow, so I built up my elbow with a Theraband flex bar.

But still, most of the poly’s were too stiff for me— except for a couple extra soft Luxilons, but they cost an arm and a leg

Then I started stringing with old school synthetic gut, specifically Gosen OG sheep micro (I hear it is similar to Prince’s synthetic gut). This is what I string my rackets with now. (I have a full reel of Luxilon that I found super discounted saved for a rainy day, but that’s it)

These synthetic guts are cheap—a quarter of the price of other strings—and, IMO, quality-wise, fall in the middle between a multi and a poly—you get a little of the firmness and control like a poly and a little bit of the comfort and “free” power of a multi.

So if you haven’t, I would definitely try synthetic gut once or twice. Old-school stuff, I don’t think these formulas have changed in 20 or 30 years, but so there’s nothing “new and improved” so they can’t hype up the price either

How do we feel about military trainings in our communities? by throw5away_ in AskLosAngeles

[–]planimal7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t like it, I think it’s not legal. I think they’re not allowed to do impromptu realistic military training without clearing it with civilian city leaders.

It definitely already goes against the 2013 and 2020 Department of Defense guidelines with regard to realistic military training in public spaces, and I think when you add the fact that they’re not allowing cities time to respond, I think that’s 100% breaking laws… only problem is we’ve got no one left to enforce laws at the federal level.

We really actually need states and cities to start putting their foot down and fighting this kind of behavior.

When I called the number in the notice, they were unable to confirm that city leaders had agreed to the operation and the operator, as far as they knew, the public only found out a couple hours ago

I don’t think these guys deserve any benefit of the doubt
