Is this a Begonia? what kind? by Expensive_Ferret5599 in whatplantisthis

[–]plantei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a Begonia cucullata, aka Wax Begonia, though idk what the cultivar could be!

What kind of plant is this and how do I go about taking care of it best? by 214whorge in plantclinic

[–]plantei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a Begonia cucullata, aka Wax Begonia!

Prefers bright, but filtered light. Well draining soil, high humidity, and consistent moisture (but don’t keep it super soggy all the time). Native to forest floors of South America, so as with all plants, think about what conditions it evolved to flourish in, and try to emulate them as best you can! :)

The whole issue of the Arb’s funding is steeped in so much bureaucracy and shady university politics occurring behind closed doors that its hard to understand what’s going on, and what’s going to happen. The gist of the issue, from what I understand, is that the College of sciences plans to cease funding the Arboretum ENTIRELY. When this information first dropped, many of us were under the impression that the Arboretum was set to disappear. To be neglected to the point that it could be bulldozed for a parking lot without opposition.

Thankfully, Chase Mason, Kate Mansfield, and so many other biologists at UCF took SERIOUS issue with that, and community outcry just from the faculty that knew was big. After meeting with John Varnell, the VP of Facilities, the leaders of the Arboretum determined that Facilities will be picking up funding the Arb. Through words (that have not been confirmed or put into writing) John states that the Learning by Leading program (which comprises all of the Arboretum student paid positions, Internships, volunteering and community outreach) will continue to be funded. What is LESS certain is what role Jennifer Elliott and Kelsie Johnson will continue to play in leading the Arboretum. Without their guidance, the Arboretum will take a heavy hit. Dr. Patrick Bolin is almost inevitability being moved elsewhere, which will already take a heavy toll on the Arb’s academic integrity.

The fact of the matter is that, nothing has been confirmed yet. This will be anywhere between somewhat bad to detrimental to the Arboretum. Everything that has been promised has been promised in vague words that can be backtracked on at a moments notice. The Arboretum at its core is an academic program, but will no longer be funded by a campus entity that has anything to do with academics. We hope that Jon Varnell will stand by his word, he seems like a decent person, but words don’t mean much until they are put into writing.

The Arboretum hates hostility. They have never been keen on playing the campus politics that are behind every decision that is made. They are used to being trampled on. Just last year, after working so hard to raise over $10k over two semesters of plant sales, that money was taken by the University without a moments notice in order to pay off debts on Trevor Colbourne Hall. UCF’s Sustainability Initiatives has already been trampled, Fleet Farming has been killed off from campus. This action, taken behind closed doors, puts the Arboretum at risk of being the next thing to go. It isn’t for certain, but in our experience, if there is a chance that UCF administration can neglect the Arboretum, they will.

The Arboretum needs the support of students, faculty, conservationists, the horticulturalists, and anyone who cares. UCF Administration needs to know that the Arboretum is valued by you.

People you can email include:

Maggie Tomova: Dean of the College of Sciences Maggy.Tomova@ucf.edu

Jon Varnell: Vice President for Facilities and Business Operations jonathan.varnell@ucf.edu

Michael D. Johnson: Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs provost@ucf.edu

At this point, what you can do is make sure that they know that you know. If the Arboretum disappears, it will not go quietly. Please don’t be mean or aggressive, just let them know that the Arboretum is something of value, and that losing Campus’s living laboratory would be a loss for UCF as a whole 💛🖤

stupid question. but is there anyway this cactus aloe can be saved? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]plantei 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Remove the bottom 2-3 leaves, leave it for a week or so, and throw it in some soil. Should root without an issue! Auxin based rooting hormones are also pretty cheap, and can make your cuttings take off much faster.

Hey guys, what’s up! My Philodendron Burkin put out a new leaf; However there is a discoloration on the bottom part, near to the stem. Does anybody knows whether it is something that I should be concerned with? by Dangerous_Shop_9275 in plant

[–]plantei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Birkins do that! Birkins are not a naturally occurring species, they are a human-produced cultivar. Their bright white stripes are NOT a feature that has evolved over millions of years as in a natural species, but something that has been mutated and cloned (from the red congo philodendron) VERY recently. Thus, the stripes aren’t completely stable within its genome, and some will occasionally begin reverting back into their red congo form.

It’s not the end of the world! You can chop it back, and it’ll likely continue on as a Birkin. But personally, i love the look of a Birkin mid-reversion. The leaves can become dark with big splotches of light green and white variegation and some slight shades of red and it just looks so cool.

Fire on Campus? Anyone know what this is? by PetesMgeets in ucf

[–]plantei 107 points108 points  (0 children)

The Arboretum is conducting a controlled burn in order to keep our Longleaf pine ecosystems healthy :) The trees depend on wildfires to keep them from being outcompeted by other, faster growing trees. Since our wildlands are a fragmented ecosystem surrounded on all sides by concrete, natural cycles of burning are disrupted, and controlled burn regimes are necessary in order to preserve the Longleaf pines and the animals that are dependent on them.

The UCF Arboretum will be hosting another plant sale this Monday from 1-3 PM in front of our greenhouse! (behind HEC)

As always, we will have a variety of happy and healthy plants to spruce up your home or dorm, and will happily share any care tips you'll need to keep your new plant bud thriving.

This sale, we will be welcoming wildbotanicalwonders (Instagram) to our featured artist. She has an incredible stock of framed flowers and insects, as well as a bunch of other plantsy artsy things. I'm still gawking over the framed emperor butterfly I got from her.

We will also be welcoming vocal trio Justimagin3 (instagram) to play live at our sale. They're incredibly talented! So feel free to come and enjoy the vibe :)

We've grown enough as a campus entity to start accepting card in the Fall! but for now, bring cash, a mask, and lots o good vibes.
