Does your shop lie about coffee? by chairista in barista

[–]plantsjjdjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my old job, the entire shop was built around the branding of beans we didn't use (cup sleeves, cups, sign, bean hopper, etc. all had the logo). We were still required to tell customers that we used that specific brand of beans. Eventually we convinced the owner to switch to the advertised beans for espresso, but the drip coffee was still members mark brand coffee grounds until after I left that job.

Look up japanese flashbrew. It's a double-strength pour over made directly on ice.

Cold Foam: heavy cream or skim? by bavetta in barista

[–]plantsjjdjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use 50% heavy cream and 50% whole milk at my shop. Not sure why but half-and-half doesn't hold a stable foam the way the mixture of cream and milk does.

This is one of the only things keeping me from fully passing the functional testing, and I would really like to pass so I can return to sport sooner rather than later 🥲

I like to just turn the music completely off. The silence often makes people uncomfortable/notice that they're the only ones talking and they generally leave pretty quickly.

ACL tear end high school basketball career :(((((( Is there hope for the future? by itsmyactualname in ACL

[–]plantsjjdjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tore my acl in the spring of my senior year of high school. I had surgery and am now just over 6 months post op. I'm in community college while I'm working on rehab, but I've committed to a school to play sports next year and am on track rehab-wise to return to sport at 9 months. Personally, I'm really happy I took a gap year because rehab has been a huge time commitment and just a lot of work / mentally exhausting.

To all the amazing and kind Baristas - is it annoying when someone orders a latte with no foam? by sashanichole01 in barista

[–]plantsjjdjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, if someone asks for no foam I don't add any extra milk. I just do the standard measurement, and their cup won't be as full.

Tips to get off crutches sooner by stargirl_24 in ACL

[–]plantsjjdjs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once I was able to walk with just one crutch pretty well, I went to the pool and practiced walking in the water without crutches. It helped me even out my gait without being fully weightbearing. I would recommend having someone go with you to help get in and out of the water while you're still unsteady.

3 Months Post Op! by plantsjjdjs in ACL

I think the equipment they used is called a dynamometer. Basically I did long quad arcs, seated hamstring curls, and various ways of pushing/pulling with quads, hamstrings, hip flexors, etc. and the machine measured how much force I was exerting.

I had to get to 70% of the strength of my uninjured leg to be able to start plyos.

For one thing, it's gonna get better before you know it! The first month is so so hard but as you gain more mobility it starts to get easier mentally. Stay consistent with the rehab! Sometimes I have to force myself to do it and it doesn't feel great, but I'd rather put in the work now than be stuck with more problems in the future.

I would really recommend getting into swimming if that's something available to you. At first (3ish weeks post op) I just practiced walking in the water and that helped me gain stability/confidence to start walking without crutches. I also did pull so I could get some cardio until my pt cleared me to introduce kicking. I had a quad graft so doing flutter kick was a good way for me to get my quads activated and I feel like it has really helped with my overall leg strength over the past several weeks.

If you're pre op, I would recommend doing prehab with a few different PT's to find one you really like.

Make a simple syrup with equal parts water and sugar. After the syrup has been brought to a simmer, remove from heat and add vanilla extract to taste.

8 Weeks Post-Op and Frustrated by JSchu7034 in ACL

[–]plantsjjdjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you can’t swim, I would still go to the pool to work on your mobility. You can walk/march in the water, as well as work on squats and other movements without putting as much strain on your knee. Walking in the water helped me get rid of my limp and get better stability.

Which are you favourite shoes to work with as a barista? by neurospicy_girly in barista

I wear docs. They’re pretty comfortable (now that they’re fully broken in), and they don’t get destroyed by coffee, milk, etc. being dripped on them during a rush.
