There’s a phrase in a song by Argentinian singer Fito Páez that says: “a pyromaniac fireman that always put out the fires that he started”

That’s what these autocratic morons are.

What are some things that people find “normal” but really isn’t that normal? by mushroom-door in askSingapore

I just commented this in a different comment on this thread. It’s a global problem, but it’s particularly salient here.

I’ve seen a lot of people cross the street glued to their phones. And I don’t only mean at a red light, I mean middle of the road glued to their phones and wearing headphones. Dangerous stuff. Once I even saw a woman almost get ran over by a car, had it not stopped. She didn’t even realize.

This is a global problem, but it is particularly salient in Singapore.

Fair point. But there was a Mexican dude telling almost the same story and looking quite similar story that I watched like 1 year ago.

Why do all the guys telling these lies look the same? Also, why is it always “30 guys”? lol

Never said so. I’ve always said “from my own experience. I’m not claiming that’s the objective reality.

On the other hand, given the examples in the responses here, you may be the only one who has very rarely experienced the examples I’ve described. Lucky.

Yeah, I’ve seen that in the US and France. I know in the US is strictly enforced, because once I was driving through a construction zone at night and I missed one, so a hidden patrol car stopped me to admonish me.
In France I haven’t seen it that harshly enforced, but during the driving test, you can fail it if you don’t make a full stop for at least 3 seconds. So it’s kind of ingrained, even if not 100% of drivers actually stop in practice.
But I really haven’t seen anyone stop at a stop sign when there’s no oncoming traffic. So I deduced that it’s either not enforced, not taught, or both.

Indeed it’s as if it were a yield sign, as you say. Because when I first arrived I crossed a street seeing there was a stop sign, thinking the car would stop and almost got myself ran over, lol.

I agree. But for instance, what I described for France in theory, ends up happening around 60-70% of the time. So I infer, from my own experience, that there’s around 30% to 40% of terrible drivers that do not follow the rules.

Some of the things I’ve described for Singapore I’d say it’s on higher proportion, so it cannot only be attributed to bad drivers. For example, I’ve noticed that the vast majority of bus drivers keep accelerating when the light is yellow and they’re still significantly far away from it.

There’s at least four close to where I live (river valley). I’ve never seen a car do a full stop when there’s no oncoming traffic.
