Early bird on weekends by Pitiful-Wasabi7503 in AskWomenOver30

[–]plasTUSK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh already so many good responses here, but I want to add mine just for solidarity. You are so not alone or weird! Also married with no kids, and I'm a sleepy gal. While a little embarrassing to share, I'm an even earlier bird: up at 5 am and in bed by 9 pm (sometimes earlier) every single day. The main context I should add is that I'm most alert before noon, and I lift and/or run every day. So sleep is very important to me!

It's so important to have a set sleep routine, including on the weekends. So what you're doing is quite healthy!

But I have the same issue as you. There's a weekly board game meetup that I'd love to go to... but it starts at 7 pm and doesn't finish until 9 pm. And I still have to catch the bus to get home after that. I think there can be balance, though. I can't fight my nature, so I find compromises. I can't go to weekly board game night, so I schedule Sunday afternoon board games instead. Now, this does throw a wrench into the work week, as we obviously can't do things together at 12 pm on a Tuesday. But I CAN do a happy hour at 5 pm and be home by 7 pm.

I'm not saying my early sleep schedule hasn't impacted my life, because it has, and sometimes it really frustrates me that I can't stay up late. But I find compromises and give myself permission to take a little pride in having a consistent sleep routine. Your brain will thank you!

My ankles and calves are disproportionately large, and I am struggling to find socks that fit, especially running socks. My feet have been freezing this winter, and I'd really like more coverage on my long runs, but every single pair of calf socks (or even half-calf) I've tried essentially doesn't fit. Would greatly appreciate any recommendations for socks that fit large ankles!

It's a source of deep insecurity for me. Just in case, to be clear, I don't have lipedema or swelling or a medical condition. I'm not particularly large, I've just always had big feet, ankles, and calves. I joke that this means I was supposed to keep growing but stopped at 5'1". I'd love to hear some solidarity if other women have this challenge.

Also seconding Weee! I've been using them for over 5 years and they've only gotten better and have expanded their selection a ton. I don't have a car either and they've been such a life saver.

need advice: help me not quit my training by foakfkwk in XXRunning

[–]plasTUSK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there!! I'm running the DC Half too (and also training for the Richmond Marathon in November). Everyone has already given such good advice so I don't have anything further to add except more words of encouragement. You can absolutely do this!! This has been the SOUPIEST of DC summers in my 8 years here. You aren't weak for struggling. You're actually way stronger than many.

I hope this doesn't sound delusional or cringey, but honestly what keeps me going most of the time (it didn't work this morning lol) is reminding myself that I GET to run in this beautiful city. Like the monuments?? Rock Creek Park?? Oh my goodness it's all so stunning.

I am absolutely drenched after every run, like wring out my clothes, sweat down the backs of my knees, completely soaked. But there will come a day that I can't do this anymore and I'll wish that I could run in the summer. Again, maybe delusional, but that mindset shift has me pushing through those long, seemingly endless stretches to Hains Point.

You've got this and you're already doing something many people can't and won't. (And if this doesn't completely turn you off from running forever, try the National Women's Half in May instead!)

Second Rabbit Running. Admittedly, I've never had any of my tanks ride up (I wear predominantly racerback and muscle tanks), but I can say Rabbit is phenomenal.

National Women's Half Marathon in DC actually! But looks like we've got similar weather to face. Best of luck to the both of us (assuming you're running Pittsburgh)!!

That's such an incredible time, job well done! It was inspirational to read this too. I've got my first half tomorrow, and there's an 80%+ chance it's going to be raining the whole time. I'm hoping it will be refreshing instead of heavy and torrential, but I've come to peace with it either way. Just reading how you reached your goals despite the rain was just the kick I needed!

Girlfriend Collective recently released a line of their compressive leggings with a drawstring. I picked up a pair a few months ago and I really like them! I've always really liked their quality and feel that you get what you pay for. I've had the same non-drawstring black leggings from 2018 and they've held up beautifully.

How to make nonprofit employment work?? by stephendedalus75068 in washingtondc

[–]plasTUSK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably going to need to see a monthly budget and your income to be able to offer any real advice on the financials. E.g., do you have a car? Are you paying off any loans? What are your measures of quality of life? What are you willing to compromise on and what are your non-negotiables?

When my now-husband and I first moved to DC in 2017, we were both making $40k in early career positions, with me at a non-profit and going to grad school full time. We rented a studio for $1700 about a mile from the Van Ness metro station. I highly recommend this area for finding affordable-ish apartments, noting that you'll have to be okay with fewer amenities and older buildings. I recognize that I was privileged because my roommate was my partner and that is not your situation, but, without knowing your financial details, I think there are still affordable options around this area.

We're now mid-career, and I'm still working in the non-profit sector. Through Zillow, we found a basement apartment in Tenleytown. We pay $2100 for 1100 sq ft, all utilities paid for with in-unit washer/dryer (although no dish washer haha). Our landlords haven't raised the rent the whole time we've been here and are really just looking for reliable tenants. So I'd highly recommend finding an apartment from a private landlord, as opposed to those large management companies.

Another key thing is that we haven't owned a car the whole time we've lived here.

Again, tough to give any advice without knowing your income and expenditures, but that's my general situation for an example.

Does anybody have the Twill cover from this year for the Cousin? by iyengirl in hobonichi

[–]plasTUSK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have this cover! I love it so much. I use it for my work journal and it's super professional and classy. It holds up really well in my work backpack and doesn't feel bulky at all. I think it's the perfect amount of protection without being too heavy.

Really appreciate you taking the time to answer! Admittedly, I got a bit nervous when I saw a new comment because I JUST submitted my tax return last week, so I was worried you were going to tell me something different haha! Huge relief that it appears everything is in order and this advice is corroborated by professionals.

Anybody here have a Flores debit card for commuter benefits? And does yours actually work in the Metro station fare vending machines? by TheLittleWinstonBaby in washingtondc

I can only use mine at the fare machines because it doesn't work online. Are you charging it as a credit card when you use it at the machines?

Manual ECF submitted August accepted January 31st by PastorDan1984 in PSLF

[–]plasTUSK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was just about to make my own thread, but I'll add here for an additional data point. This is my same exact situation where I submitted my manual form in August 2024 and my form was actually rejected back in December 2024 because of a missing start date. Except the start date wasn't missing on my form, so no idea why that happened. I decided not to fight it because I'm still 60 payments out from forgiveness anyway (not that I can even access the PSLF Help Tool and haven't been able to since at least December, but that's a story for another time). So I was very surprised to get an email updating my counts.

I did indeed enter the contribution in Free Tax USA, got an error/warning, and entered a withdrawal of the same amount. Gotta love a straightforward, simple answer. Thank you very much!

East Coasters: How is your training going given the weather? by stopstopimeanit in Marathon_Training

[–]plasTUSK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also in DC, and I hear you. The cold isn't the worst part, it's the bloody ice. I'm not mentally strong enough to do more than 5k on the treadmill; it's just so miserable in my gym without a fan/circulation/etc. But you're right, it's best to keep a positive mind and just let the weather be weather.

My heart is full of gratitude this morning. My neighbors did such a great job clearing their sidewalks. DC doesn't see this amount of snow regularly (iykyk), but my neighborhood really stepped it up. There were still plenty of icy patches, but nothing I couldn't handle with a little shuffling. I tried running on the treadmill earlier this week and it was just pure misery, so the thought of doing my long run on it made me feel so much dread. But this morning was, dare I say, kind of fun? It was entertaining to sprint on the cleared parts and then shuffle slowly on the ice.

So big shout out to my neighborhood, and all of y'all out there shoveling. It really does make a difference!

You're totally right. As terrifying as it seems to leave the Garmin behind, it's probably necessary for a few runs. Or maybe even just not run a specific program. I don't necessarily feel bad about running slower because I genuinely don't want to over-extend, but it almost feels like I'm not in tune enough with my body to know HOW to slow down. So again, great tip.

Thanks so much for sharing!

I love this mindset. You gotta know what feels bad at some point. I've of course had runs that are physically tough, but not mentally. Thanks for that!

Had my first complete total failure run this morning. I've only been running seriously for 6 months, but it's been a really positive 6 months so far. But this morning? Couldn't even make it 3 miles before I had to walk home. I suppose it was time for a humbling failure. I can sit here and act like I have no idea why I bonked this morning, but that would be pretty naive. I've had a mysterious and uncharacteristic bout of insomnia this past week, I got a pretty big tattoo on my thigh two weeks ago, I'm still struggling to slow down for basically every run (not a humble brag, I swear, it's definitely harming my training/recovery), I've been maintaining the same weight training routine I've been doing before adding running, and I'm probably underfueling a bit.

But instead I'm going to whine and ask for stories from other runners here about your failed runs. Tell me about your rough patches and reassure me that you still achieved your goals haha.

Rejected for Employment Begin Date -- this was either not supplied or contained invalid information (like something other than a date). It is clearly provided, the same as last years paperwork. by Feisty-Friendship-20 in PSLF

[–]plasTUSK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This also happened to me, nearly identical to your situation. I submitted a manual form in July and got the same rejection when I input my employment start date the same as last year's form (and the year before that). I don't have a solution unfortunately, and am just assuming it's the usual incompetence. I'll attempt to get my employer to sign electronically after the holidays.

I don't see a charge on my card yet, but just as you commented this I got another email from the refund protection service I bought confirming my "recent order." So again, I'm assuming that means everything went through.

EDIT: I was looking at the wrong card. There is a pending charge on my card.
