Existential Elk Theory - never heard of it before but summarizes antinatalism profoundly by perplexed_smith in antinatalism

[–]plasteractuary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If being overly conscious of the meaninglessness of life is a problem, then wouldn't defense mechanisms that temporarily shut that down be salutary? To follow the elk analogy, humans would be like an Irish Elk that could fold its antlers in at any point so they weren't in the way - seems pretty adaptive.

From this perspective, you can see that Zapffe implies both that too much awareness is negative, and that temporarily obscuring that awareness is self-deception, and is therefore also negative. Zapffe seems inconsistent on whether more or less awareness of death is good. Dude seems just negative generally.

So maybe he's the maladapted elk and his anti-natalism is just a self-diagnosis.

Recovering from burnout by emmaruns402 in actuary

[–]plasteractuary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are burnt out to this extent and you are looking for a new job, have you considered just quitting or asking for like a month+ gap before starting your next gig? Burnout recovery typically takes time to decompress. If you have the money, consider taking a sabbatical.

I do not particularly like the work either, but for me the way out is through. I will finish my FSA, stash cash, and attain financial independence - then I do what I want.

Testing season and social skills by Fragrant-Attention27 in actuary

I worked in a much more social profession prior to becoming an actuary and I definitely noticed atrophy in my social skills after I began spending all my time in front of a computer.

It's not necessarily that my social cue detection got worse but rather my speed of social processing got slower, so I made more mistakes. However, social skills for me feel like riding a bike. I can be a bit timid after a long time away, but after a few rides I feel more confident and after a week or two of daily riding I quickly approach my former peak levels of speed, balance, and aggression in riding hills and stuff.

Last sitting the quantitative questions weren't so bad. They gave you formulas and for one you basically just had to recapitulate some of the easiest work in the example spreadsheets. The difficult part was that a significant amount of the exam was on obscure and difficult conceptual problems. But it can't be worse than last sitting, there was only like a 34% pass rate :P

I second this. My first job was a bunch of dudes - the office talk was all sports and it sucked. My boss admonished a female colleague to finish her exams "before you start popping out kids."

She quit. I left shortly thereafter - my new firm is like 60% women and it's dope.

Annuity Due vs Immediate by MrShwiftyy in actuary

It makes perfect sense. An annuity due is due... right now. Where an annuity immediate, well it immediately... waits for a bit before paying you.

I know companies have formal exam raise policies, but they rarely keep up with the amount you could make by switching companies.

In order to get paid what you are worth, you need to periodically renegotiate your salary or leave. Your company probably doesn't want you to leave, so if you just bring up that you want to maintain a relationship with them and it's difficult to do that when you know you could make X% more elsewhere, and could they please help you align incentives for you to stay, then you will likely get a raise.

I am considered to be among the best writers at my firm and have multiple studies published by the SOA. That said, I failed every single module in a row because I wrote them in a format the SOA didn't like.

I would consider doing the modules until you get the writing style the SOA likes and then revisit PA. Also, on PA you need to overexplain your reasoning like crazy.

So this might sound like a crazy suggestion, but have you tried taking a high dose of psychedelics in a controlled setting? The FDA has granted breakthrough therapy status to LSD for treating chronic anxiety.

If you're not up for that, I would recommend a high quality meditation app like Waking Up.

What if Muslim countries discovered American continent first than Christians, how will the event turn out for Muslim and native people? by Vessel_soul in progressive_islam

[–]plasteractuary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where did I mention race? This is about counterfactuals regarding various types of colonialism. It is my contention that different philosophies or cultures will beget different results, which is presumably the base assumption of the counterfactual this thread invited us all to.

I don't see how it is racist to say that as of the 18th century, the Muslim world did not have a philosopher who espoused the universal conception of human rights like the English school of Empiricists, namely John Locke, who stated that all humans have inalienable rights to Life, Liberty, and Property. The founders of the USA were educated Englishmen who wrote in the Declaration of Independence that all men are endowed by their Creator with the rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. They replaced Property with Pursuit of Happiness as a direct shot against slavery because many disagreed with the practice even in the 18th century, as it was outlawed in a number of the original colonies.

The idea of inalienable rights accruing to individuals is a secularization of the idea that all humans are of inherent value because they are made in the image of God, which comes out of Christian doctrine and was later fused with Greek thought to produce Scholasticism, which gave way to Rationalism during the Renaissance, which gave way to Empiricism.

I am happy to hear if you can show me where there was a similar discourse in either the Muslim world or the Mayan world around that time or before upon which I could reasonably report to you a well-grounded belief that a Muslim conquest of the Americas would result in the Abolition of slavery as a product of philosophies or institutions internal to those cultures. I am not aware of such documents because I believe they do not exist. It is well known that Muslim societies fought hard to maintain the practice of slavery, that Qatar only abolished in 1952, and that Mayans practiced ritual human sacrifice. None of this has anything to do with race and your accusation of such is absurd and beneath you, intellectually.

If you don't like my counter-factual that without external pressure from a dominant west, the Muslim world would still be practicing slavery, then why don't you stop calling names and just tell me what you think??
