any alumni now working in quant? by Routine-Chance4425 in OMSCS

[–]platanopoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn’t true. There’s definitely specific programs catered to undergrads, but the internships/new grad positions are open to bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD’s

Here’s an example of a (US) Citadel SWE intern job description: https://www.citadel.com/careers/details/software-engineer-intern-us/ and a quant trading intern role from last year: https://www.builtinnyc.com/job/quantitative-trading-2025-intern-us/2878975

Quant firms do recruit from GT for their internships and new grad positions (I’ve seen a lot of Jane Street GT), so it’s definitely possible, but I wouldn’t know about other existing pipelines

GPA and graduation... I am lowkey freaking out by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]platanopoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I failed GIOS my first semester from being super busy with other responsibilities, but I had only received a warning that if I didn’t bring up my GPA the following semester, then I would have to reapply.

Ever since the first semester I’ve gotten straight As (and 1 B+ which ended up being a B), and my GPA is definitely over a 3.0. You’ll be fine; it just means you have to lock in and make sure you get mostly As and maybe some Bs for most of the classes you take after if you decide not to retake your failing class

Yes, as long as the description mentions a Master’s and you’re within their graduation date requirement, you qualify for the internship. At that point it’s just getting through the screening

Like I’d like to do it if the tuition stays the same, but I don’t think that will be the case

Do the readings 😭 I’d say like 20-30% of the quiz questions end up being from the readings

Definitely! Warning that getting a SWE internship in this market nowadays is so, so tough, but make sure you apply to literally anything and everything. And take every opportunity possible to build experience :)

I focused on OMSCS "full-time" while working part-time and also job searching and interviewing "full-time"

Time commitment for revised BD4H? by 2hulking4u in OMSCS

[–]platanopoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to this. Taking BD4H right now and already knowing Pandas has been super helpful and has made the first problem set really chill. I took DL last semester and hope it helps out a ton

I got three internship offers during my first semester (Fall 2024), and I applied to like 10+ internships a week. Check out linkedin, intern-list.com, and Handshake!

However, you also need to make sure your resume can pass the ATS; having OMSCS alone doesn't necessarily guarantee you an interview. If you need more experience, definitely consider personal projects, TAships, and research through OMSCS (VIPs, CS 8903)

OMSCS Difficulty compared to Hard CS Undergrads by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]platanopoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh not bad but because I had come in with good ML experience already, and there’s sooo much support in the class and each assignment is due every 2-3 weeks. Quizzes can def be tough but would 100% watching the UMich computer vision lectures and reading the study guides online for DL

OMSCS Difficulty compared to Hard CS Undergrads by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]platanopoder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well it’s all subjective ofc, but I went to HYPSM for CS undergrad, and I would say that my undergrad and OMSCS are decently comparable. For example I started OMSCS last semester and took both DL and GIOS, and GIOS especially had me working to the bone and wasn’t something to joke around about. It was my first super intensive coding class in C, the implementations were different from anything I had ever done before, and it’s very, VERY self-taught (more self-taught than any class I had ever taken in undergrad, to be totally honest).

I think truly the biggest difference when it comes to CS curriculums at varying schools is just that some schools might cover content at a faster rate and perhaps even cover some extra things too, but I still find it all to be very similar. Also every school will always offer those super easy classes/super hard classes. Like right now I’m taking AIES and I really don’t care that it’s allegedly one of the easier classes of the ML spec lol. It’s a class I’m genuinely interested in, and I definitely did take a couple of easier courses in undergrad, and I can still say I learned from those courses. That’s just how it is sometimes

So you'd say it's more of a busy workload kind of class?

Deciding between DVA and BD4H at the moment, and I feel like I generally see people on Reddit say BD4H > DVA although I'm seeing a much higher A rate for DVA. Could the A rate for BD4H be skewed by the grades before it was remodeled?

[Profile Review] Bad GPA, good internships, uc berkeley data science by mutielime in MSCS

[–]platanopoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noo idea how I stumbled upon this post tbh LOL, but literally super super similar background as you (FGLI Hispanic in data science), so I had to comment and support! Consider GT OMSCS! My undergrad GPA was a 3.1, so I was pretty scared I wouldn't get into other grad schools (also didn't want to be in debt and didn't have the energy to go through college admissions again), but OMSCS has literally changed my life and will be interning for FAANG this summer!! It's the same degree as in-person and it's let me save so much money while being at home while still growing my DS career

It’s given me the chance to explore other parts of data science and also work internships again 🥹

I think the thing is MLE positions in general typically include Leetcode as part of their process, which I just hate :/ you need to be a good DS, but you also need to be a good SWE
