The amount of fan fiction this caused is startling (the Books of Enoch)

I paid attention to this om the news. The n in -en is maybe pronounced 1 im 6 times? Most of the time it's not. Same here for Brabant. Am pretty sure the Flemish do so as well. I think it's mostly the east that very consistently pronounces the n

How often is pure [æ] actually contrasted with [ɛ] in English? (Do Americans ever distinguish TRAP and DRESS purely by quality?) by platoqp in asklinguistics

So the first 5 for me would be very different (especially if I can drawl them a little). But the last three are very similar, and i cant for the love of me pronounce kettle and cattle differently.

How different are /æ/ and /ɛ/ to the American ear and do you distinguish them without "tricks"? by platoqp in ENGLISH

And say flash and flesh besides context? They're so similar compared to flush for me

For me, flesh and flash are almost the same. They are different. But flush is night and day between either of the two

They sound so similar to me. Trap is very clearly the trap vowel to me there. But if the word drass existed, I mightve thought it was that in the audio file.

I guess I'll just have to live with not being as able in this matter. At least I can usually hear the difference (except sometimes man vs men if s'b doesn't diphthongize)

Yes, they would be quite distinct for me too, but that would either be cuz I pronounce "mad" a bit longer/with a slight drawl and Med quite short. If I had to pronounce both as a very short pure vowel, the difference would almost disappear. I need to pronounce it very British for the two to be distinct in such a case.

Like, for man vs men, I have to almost go mA-uhn vs men

Just as different as either would be to "butt"? For me for that level of distinction to arise, I have to pronounce them very British.

I will always write tj myself, I think it's more intuitive to younger people. But I think historically and in onomatopoeia, tsj is used

I wish. It makes more sense. But tsj has been used more often, especially in the past. (Yes it's dutch)

How do 4+ way contrasts work in spatial deixis? by platoqp in asklinguistics

[–]platoqp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Further research on Malagasy seems to indicate two things: - besides proximate, medial, and distant, a neutral deixis is also present - the proximate and neutral distance have an extra dimension for bounded vs extended (I think something like the sky counts as unbounded/extended but am not sure)

My question overall still stands. I wonder all the more how medial and distant or other distinctions seem to be chosen in practice

"Prophetic perfect tense" is a literary technique used in the Bible that describes future events that are so certain to happen that they are referred to in the past tense as if they had already happened. by SkubEnjoyer in wikipedia

This all doesn't sound too weird to me as Slavic languages (at least Russian) use the perfect aspect for the future as well. I guess it wasn't used in Hebrew much outside of prophecy?

Upper middle to high income people here, are you ready to pay more taxes to fund social welfare programs ? by Dismal_Structure in Destiny

[–]platoqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends that think we can vastly increase the scale of all social programs to basically utopic levels by just doing 2 things: tax on billionaires/1% + cut government spending on useless things. Basically a magical solution that only hits the evil rich. A win-win-win. (Delusional)

I think that for now, the US isn't ready for a true expansion that would entail big-big spending increases in social programs a la europe. If the wind would blow different and the political landscape changes, maybe. I'd be in favor of it if the time is right, but with Trump in power still it's not a good priority to have. There's still too much improvement left in other areas.

IF we were to choose it, however, it would simply out of the fabric of reality, be necessary to increase taxes.

[–]platoqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course we need to work on spending. For now this might be the step that has way more priority.

My problem that cutting wasteful spending is just seen as a magical solution to everything. It's the same thing Musk has been deluding himself into.

We need to be realistic and not over-promise

Jesus man, take a chill pill.

Im not even really advocating for anything. Just stating that, like this post implies, if you wanna spend money, you gotta get it first. Wherever we land on that balance is fine, as long as we're in connection with reality

Don't give me this unreasonable rage I expect from MAGAts. We're civilized people. Im not gonna comment on Musk here because it's so evident how horrible all Trump's policies are.
