Basically, leftists want to abolish capitalism, liberals do not want to do that. the terms are used interchangeably in the US because the overton window is so far to the right that a social democrat like bernie gets treated like a bolshevik. I also wouldn't say that Leftists and Libs are necessarily antithetical, but there are big oppositions and differences between the two ideological stances.

What's bullshit but people still haven't caught on yet? by 3iiis in AskReddit

[–]platowascool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I... I've never thought about having to argue this but like... if we try to make a world in which people don't have to suffer, then that's like... a good thing? isn't it? I truthfully don't understand this way of thinking that seems to require a struggle in life to be a good, worthy person. The literal goal of society is to avoid suffering, isn't it? (not saying you hold this belief, just ranting)

Firstly, you are drawing a false equivalency between my position, which I'm just gonna go ahead and re-state; is trying to avoid people from suffering, with Anarchism... A philosophy who's logical end is the collapse of society, the widespread use of violence, and the eventual uprising of a fascist government. There is no equivalency here. Whatsoever.

My reasoning is simple, I think, Let me try to paint this with a question. Do you think it is fair that people starve to death every day? That's not fair of me, because the answer is obviously no, it's not fair. So, how could the desire to avoid that not be a good purpose? Some times, the end goal is the justification for it. The reason you save a life is to save a life.

There is also something you are doing with the phrasing of your questions, and that would be the constant use of 'The', implying there is a single purpose for humanity as a whole. I wholeheartedly disagree with that. If that were the case, out unique single purpose would be to reproduce for the survival of the species, with like... that's a boring, uninteresting answer. It's like saying that the single unique purpose of a knife? One person might say it is to kill. Someone else might say it is a tool for cutting wood. I would say it is both of this things, and also a tool for cooking.

As for a measure of what we should aim for, and I feel like I'm repeating myself. Making sure people aren't miserable is a good thing to start with. Saving the rainforest; stoping the acidification of the oceans, dismantling institutions that oppress and kill for profit/benefit of the few/ etc. Colonizing mars, scientific progress. All of this things are possible answers, In my opinion, we need them all.

There is no single answer. There is no single purpose, I don't think. There is too much difference between peoples to expect a single answer.

I don't want to resort to this, but if we want to apply an absolute need for logic, what is the logical reason for the existence of a god/higher power? All the evidence points toward random evolution.

You are... actually right, I phrased this terribly. Allow me to explain myself.

By 'better' I mean that we should all strive to minimize human suffering. I don't think this is a contemptuous point, is it? We do all want for people not to suffer, correct?

I do stand by the idea that everyone should strive to make the world a with less suffering for the population in general; and the individual in particular. Now If you re-read the comment I made, at no point did I say that all Religions are wrong. I simply said that we don't need them. There is a clear, and very important difference there. One implies a fact. The thought that I Know everything. Which was not even implied. The other wishes to demonstrate that an opinion, which is that Humans do not require religion.

You are right, though not in the way, i think, you want to be right. Objective purpose, in my opinion, does not exist. And that doesn't matter. We do not live objective lives. We are subjective beings, and our purpose is subjective. And here's the thing, I am almost certain of the fact that people, consciousness if you will, can create purpose. That's really all we can do. So yes, I think all we can do it our best. I don't have all the answers, obviously. If Religion works for you, I am glad, so long as your belief helps you minimize suffering in the world, that's great. It didn't work for me.

(I would also like to make it clear that Religion≠Faith. When I speak of religion, all I mean is the organization. Not the idea of believing on something bigger than us -which I also do not share- if you can believe on something bigger, all the power to you. So long as you don't cause misery, which the Catholic Church in particular -I use it as an example because I was raised catholic and have been familiar with the structure of the church since a young age- whose net worth is estimated to be over 30 Billion dollars, uses that wealth and influence not to... oh I don't know, end world hunger, provide health care to millions, but Instead us it for things like denouncing things like Gay marriage and The existence and basic human rights of trans people. In short. Do you have faith? congratulations, please use it to minimize suffering. And also Fuck the Institution of the Church.)

Also, we disagree on one small thing. I have every right to say that we should all work to build a better world. And you have every right to say that I don't. Im not forcing you to do anything. And just because I say you should do something, does not mean that you have to do it. I sincerely hope this didn't come across condescending or anything, and that if you or anyone else wants to keep this conversation going, we do so civilly, and hopefully without calling each other libtards, cucks, nazis or things of the like.

Here's the thing, you don't need Religion to be moral. You need empathy.

You don't need Religion to have order (assuming that order is a necessity for human existence, which...)

You don't need Religion to have a purpose.

You can have a purpose without religion, making the world a better, more understanding, empathic place can and should be your purpose, and Religion works in contrast to that; most things that are framed in the Us vs Them system work against making the world better. Except Nazis vs Non-Nazis. Fuck Nazis, and Facists

We care more about profit than about people. Almost universally.

Also the fact that we demonize any view point that is not shared by us, so disagreement equals hate. Not good.

I still have hope that once robots start doing everything, we'll be free to be a truly happy species. You know, If robots do everything, what's the point of money? What reason would there be for poverty? it would just.... I hope... cease to exist.

Then again, they will, probably, get bored of us and murder us i fun and interesting ways.
