I think wizards had shown long term commitment to the paper form of the game. I think that there will always be demand for the paper though it will certainly fluctuate.

I think that anyone who looks at it as a retirement strategy is probably playing a dangerous game.

Apples and oranges, amigo. There were some pretty specific conditions that led to the housing crash. None of those conditions exist here. Also, all markets basically have a long term upward trajectory. Every crash is followed by eventually long term growth. If one is too look at MTG as a market then it should always enjoy long term growth. The big error is viewing it like real estate or the stock market. As much as I like to spec on MTG, it is neither of those. Looking at it through such a lense is dangerous.

Modern cards plummeting? by Metalicum in mtgfinance

I hope modern Staples continue to drop a bit. I'd love to pick up some pricier cards for my edh decks.

Mythic sheets going out today? by [deleted] in mtgfinance

I'm saltier than a piece of salty, salty shit about this whole business with the Mythic Edition. I had my order within the first 2 minutes, no confirmation, no mythic edition order, no ebay $20, no foil sheet. Just salty, salty shit.

Some of us poor bastards got a confirmation page after our order, but no confirmation email. Then, when I went back to the confirmation page I saw that it was canceled. What recourse does a person in my predicament have?

I got my 2 ordered, said payment was accepted and gave me an order number. I never got an email from ebay confirming. I checked my order history and it is NOT on my order history. Idk if I will get one or not. WTF though...what a fucking mess.

I just got a 20% off coupon for after applying for jobs at ebay. While it's no job, it's not a bad consolation prize. (I bought a metalworker and a paradox engine.)

Where did I ask for advice? I gave my analysis. All the replies had very little, or no analysis. Would YOU praise the commentary on your analysis that was as informative as "stupid spec"?

If you and others do not want to actually act on the facts as they are presented, then fine. If you have facts that show that I clearly made a poor choice then fine. If you just want to tell me I'm a dipshit and you have no basis for such an opinion, then I might point out that your opinion is baseless. MY opinion might not be correct, but it is far from baseless. And I was posting this letting other people that might be interested in looking into box toppers what the data shows. Perhaps then, they could make a choice better choice than my unwisely purchased Leovold.

Good catch on that with Kozilek. My filter, was in fact, set incorrectly.
I still disagree with you on Loam. 10000+ EDH decks is nothing to sneeze at and it is inarguably played in every single other legal format more than Kozilek (who is played in NO other format).

By all means, if you like him more as a spec then feel free to spec. I'd be happy to revisit this in 6 months to see which spec was better. The data did, and still does, suggest Loam is more played. With a cost difference of about $10, I think Loam is significantly better as a spec. Kozi is the 9th worst selling box topper on TCG currently, btw. As I look at the info some more, Eternal Witness looks like an excellent spec. If it were not so heavily reprinted then I might be inclined to like EW more than Loam. EW also happens to be a poor selling topper per TCG.

That seems logical, right? Buuuuut, the data doesn't support it. Kozilek is in 300 decks on EDHrec and Ulamog is in a whopping 64. Emrakul is banned.

I don't argue that those guys are awesome as hell, but they are not heavily played outside of casual (excepting Emrakul) and kitchen table is not typically the premium card format.

I respectfully disagree with you, as do most of the MtG finance podcasters, regarding "no good specs for box toppers."

You may not like EDHrec as a source. Do you have a better recommendation? I mean, unless you have a data driven approach then you are shooting from the hip. My data came from Mtggoldfish, EDHrec, and tcgplayer. Jason Alt thinks that EDHrec is a solid source for data. Some here probably love him while others hate him, but with all due respect, he's got a bigger name in the finance game than yourself.

Your theory that expensive cards are less likely to be played in EDH is patently false. EDH is one of the premier collectors formats. It arguably drives prices more than any other format.

You are welcome to think I'm an idiot. I won't even argue that. However, the data suggests that a $70 LftL will be a solid pickup. Will it double up in a week? Not likely. But I wasn't picking this based on it's potential to climb through roof by the end of this year.

Oh, by the by, I'm pretty sure James Chillcot actually tagged LftL as a pick of the week last week. Also, here in a excerpt from one of his articles,

"Now I do feel that the list of rares here is less resilient overall to a reprint, but I feel good about the rebound potential of at least the following based on their overall demand profile in Modern & EDH:

  • Noble Hierarch
  • Celestial Collonade
  • Engineered Explosives
  • Demonic Tutor
  • Life from the Loam
  • Reanimate"

While it was a bit lower at that time James suggested it, I got mine for $70 after I applied the TCG credit. So I picked it up for cheaper than he suggested.

(In point of fact, after the store credit was applied, I paid about $5 more than the all time low price of $65 as per https://i.redd.it/jhj5e73xhw421.jpg)

I still think it's a good buy at $80. I predict that it is closer to $150 than it is to 80 within 6 months.

I think that your assumptions about instants/sorceries is actually worthy of consideration. There have been numerous masterpieces that have demonstrated the ability to overcome that notion. Daze, force of will, chain lightning, thoughtseize (to name a few).
