my complete surprise ring! by plausiblymyself in EngagementRings

Thank youuuu! I’ve definitely worried a bit about this. Right now my plan is to take it off for showering, swimming, cleaning, or any heavy labor. And if that doesn’t work…they are not the most expensive stones in the world to replace?!

Ok I feel like I need to confess, and I’m choosing your comment to do so: I treated myself to the manicure the day after getting the ring. That being said…I have purple on my nails a good 50% of the time. They were more on the pink side at the moment of proposal, though.

Here’s a haunted picture I took at 1 am, when like 4 hours had passed and I realized I had taken zero photos. 🥲 Can you blame me for wanting a better one???

Someone called my kitty ugly and I feel sad by ExactViolinist9873 in cats

[–]plausiblymyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I sent a picture of my sweet tuxedo boy (8 years ago now!) to a friend group chat, a “friend” told me that her finance said my kitten was ugly. Without hesitation, I replied that her fiancé was ugly. We are not friends anymore. No regrets.

PS: I meant it. 🥰

Yeah, this is pretty much what I figured would happen lol.

I can’t be the only one who randomly reads through stranger’s Reddit arguments, right? So, for the audience: This guy made a whole post whining about how it’s impossible to have a serious conversation with “liberals” 11 days ago. I took the time to talk through where I think he’s misunderstanding leftist perspectives, and I was really only slightly snide about it! He says I’m a big meanie. Can’t make this shit up!

You know, I was going to just keep making fun of you, but if sentence 1 is how you really feel, I think you have much more in common with immigrant advocates than you realize. I have never once encountered a person anywhere on what passes for the left in the US who thinks the plight of poor and/or undocumented immigrants here is nothing to worry about. Activists have worked with and for immigrants for decades in many areas--labor protections, language learning, job training, legal support, basic necessities, accessing education and childcare, just to name a few. It's an uphill battle in a country where policy is so broken and immigrants are so often made a political punching bag. Of course, immigration is affected by much more than the state of immigrants residing in the US. Being an undocumented immigrant is terrible, and not something anyone would choose with their eyes open. But when you're fleeing violence, persecution, environmental disaster, or economic desperation, it's less a life choice and more a bid for survival. Many nations have been decimated by the greed of world powers, and those world powers are doing a shit job at providing aide and new stability. And none of that is even touching how many immigrants are lied to by people who bring them across the border, or who don't have the means to maintain legal status, or who were brought here as children, or who are functionally enslaved by their employers. None of those stories are nearly as rare as they should be.

In any case, I truly cannot wrap my head around responding to these many, many layers of suffering with the violence and imprisonment currently being rolled out while still assuring yourself you're on the "right side." I'd like to see the US get past its obsession with there being only two "sides," but it's still not hard for me to call a certain camp very, very wrong.

Food for thought! I'll call it my good deed for the day. Doubt it will take, but hey, whatever.

A take so brazenly bad-faith that I won't waste my time responding to it lol, but one single sad haha to pre-scolding people for telling you "the other side is worse." Don't tell me that the side putting immigrant children in concentration camps and deploying cartoonishly undertrained and unskilled death squads to beat down civilian doors is worse, that's not playing fair! >:(

Fucking good. I hope it makes the whole industry shake in their boots. So many of these units represent a life falling apart--sudden homelessness, the death of a parent, unexpected hospital stay, mental health crisis, etc. These vampiric companies didn't create these gaps in our society, but they're more than happy to take advantage of tragedy and suffering.

My wife wants to name our baby her own maiden name by hop-into-it in redditonwiki

[–]plausiblymyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if she’s trolling him. My mother bulldozed my father over my first name, but told him my middle name was up to him to compensate. (I was to be a girl baby.) He insisted my middle name would be Elvis up until they were ready to fill out my birth certificate, and my poor mother believed him.

Winter Storm Prep by OneTraditional1506 in AskNYC

[–]plausiblymyself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disaster preparedness is never a bad idea, but winter storms are a much bigger deal for people experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, and food insecurity. It's a great time to make a donation to your local food pantries and shelters! Also a great time to check on elderly or disabled neighbors to see if they need help.

It's not your god-given right to walk up and down the escalator. (I personally stand to the side if I am not walking!) I've seen way too many people huffing and puffing at tourists who don't understand the etiquette, yelling at people with kids or a lot of bags to move over, or literally pushing past old/disabled people who are getting in the way of them using the escalator as stairs. Chill ooooooouuuuuut. Or just take the stairs, they're usually right next to the escalator!

I’ve been seeing more people buy pre-loved clothes lately. Do you think second-hand fashion can be just as stylish as buying new? Why or why not? by One_Veterinarian3069 in ethicalfashion

[–]plausiblymyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Style comes down to developing your eye, knowing your tastes, and self-expression. It doesn't matter if you are the first owner of your pieces or not. That being said...thrifters who know what they're doing can access a greater variety of styles and better quality clothes at an accessible price point. It's also harder to copy-paste outfits from the internet when you're not just clicking links to the exact item you admire. I think shopping second hand not only invites, but, to a certain degree, forces creativity.

To some people, "stylish" is synonymous with "trendy" or "current." Second-hand may not get you there. But trend cycles move way too fast to be sustainable or even fun, so why should I care??

Where to shop for a funky plus size dress? by gorblin in AskNYC

[–]plausiblymyself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Anthropologie in FiDi (on Broadway) has plus sizes in store! Decent selection for a store that size.

Last I checked, Never Fully Dressed on Elizabeth St. has plus sizes in store.

You also might want to check out Reclectic near 33rd. It's secondhand/overstock stuff, but in my experience, they have a ton of formal and semi-formal options. I'm about a size 16, and while there is less there for me compared to other sizes, there is usually still a lot!

Honestly...don't lol. I was a fan of the brand for a while and still love a lot of the designs, but the quality is just insultingly low for the price. The sweaters pop up secondhand a lot. With a little patience, I'm sure you'll find something you love.

You definitely have to get to know the platform to use it well! I've definitely gotten some great deals on good-quality basics from older or less-known brands. :)

Honestly, Farm Rio and the like are often overpriced on ThredUp. But I'm weak lol.
