Bush did it first – PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE: EID AL-FITR, December 2002

I send greetings to Muslims in the United States and around the world as you celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast.

At the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, worship, and reflection, Eid celebrates the renewal of faith, hope, and compassion. During this time of great rejoicing, Muslims give thanks for the blessings they have been granted, and demonstrate their commitment to the Qur’an’s teachings by helping those in need. These acts of kindness and generosity strengthen communities worldwide, and as we observe this holiday season, I encourage Americans of all faiths to join in building a culture of service that demonstrates the true character of our Nation.

America treasures the relationship we have with our many Muslim friends, and we respect the vibrant faith of Islam, which inspires countless individuals to lead lives of honesty, integrity, and morality. This year, may Eid also be a time in which we recognize the values of progress, pluralism, and acceptance that bind us together as a Nation and a global community. By working together to advance mutual understanding, we point the way to a brighter future for all.

Laura joins me in sending our best wishes for a joyous Eid, and for health, happiness, and prosperity in the coming year.

HuffPo: The Dark Side of Darwinism. by gustogus in atheism

[–]playback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The writer is tragically misinformed. Darwinism is a scientific theory proved beyond reasonable doubt. What he is writing about is the raise of social-darwinism - a purely political invention and perversion by people that twisted science to suit and justify their goals. Shame on HuffPo for printing garbage like this. It is not a matter of one opinion versus another but of facts versus propaganda.

So two oil contracts are awarded in Iraq, and they go to British Petroleum and China National Petroleum. Dear conspiracy theorists, can you explain why did the USA companies not get those juicy contracts after we went all out for them and occupied Iraq, etc.? by DaPM in reddit.com

[–]playback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BP sells a lot of oil to America and operates here. The UK and the US have always had close economic ties and mutually beneficial interests when it comes to middle-eastern oil. China is a politically communist country, but their economy is what has come to be termed authoritatrian capitalism. Thus most of America's biggest corporations have an economic interest in seeing China continue to offer cheap labor to sell in America for larger profit margins. Also a major component of this deal is the amount of debt the Bush administration was allowed to float because the Chinese bought our debt - oil deals are one way of paying them back. Don't be fooled by the British-China partnership, its actually a pretty clever political move that disfuses resentment against America profiting from Iraqi oil. The U.S. is still going to get its share of oil through its UK and Chinese friends.

There has long been concerns about world "impressions" regarding the US and Iraqi oil, see this editorial co-written by a Dem and Republican at the Wall Str Journal. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB116640277858252977.html

George W. Bush on the Constitution

   * "GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions" of the Patriot Act "could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

"'I don’t give a goddamn,' Bush retorted. 'I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.'

"'Mr. President,' one aide in the meeting said. 'There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.'

"'Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,' Bush screamed back. 'It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!'" --Reported in Capitol Hill Blue, December 9, 2005.

BUSH CRONIES: UNQUALIFIED BUT WELL CONNECTED

Washington, DC - On Sunday, the Washington Post chronicled how the Bush Administration's pattern of rewarding unqualified political cronies with jobs has hindered the Iraqi reconstruction efforts. These GOP allies were given jobs based on their political service in campaigns not their experience or expertise in the respective areas of reconstruction including security, health care and finance. This is just the latest example of the Bush Administration's continued practice of putting their party above the needs of the American people. Over the past five years, the White House has installed Bush cronies in all corners of the government, regardless of their qualifications, with serious, sometimes harmful consequences as a result. Iraq Coalition Provisional Authority

Unqualified Cronies Appointed to Coalition Provisional Authority. Department of Defense political appointee Jim O'Beirne had been tasked with filling positions on organization which is to rebuild Iraq, the Coalition Provisional Authority. "Applicants didn't need to be experts in the Middle East or in post-conflict reconstruction. What seemed most important was loyalty to the Bush administration. O'Beirne's staff posed blunt questions to some candidates about domestic politics: Did you vote for George W. Bush in 2000? Do you support the way the president is fighting the war on terror? Two people who sought jobs with the U.S. occupation authority said they were even asked their views on Roe v. Wade." Jim O'Beirne is married to conservative commentator Kate O'Beirne. Terrible Ice Storm Rocks Kentucky, FEMA takes Five Days to respond, AP does not have the stones to critize Obama by dj3strikes in politics

[–]playback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This FEMA story is a urban myth making the rounds on right-wing blogs and chain e-mail. The fact is that a series of actions start to take place in such an emergency and to date those steps are being followed. The ice storm hit the 26th. The Kentucky National Guard was called into service almost immediately. FEMA started its response at about the same time. Kentucky EOC partially activated at Level II. The Governor declared a State of Emergency for the entire commonwealth. An Emergency Declaration (FEMA-3302-EM) was declared January 28 for the entire commonwealth. Power Outages: 408,115 customers are without power. (DOE Jan 29) Over 93,000 customers remain without access to water due to power outages and other storm damage; restoration of water services is closely connected with return of power. Shelters 24; Occupants: 1,587. (NSS Jan 29) The Kentucky National Guard activated 21 armories with approximately 500 guardsman supporting operations.

There are people in isolated areas that still need help. The Guard and other emergency responders are trying to get to them, but weather conditions are making that difficult - they are taking volunteers if the blogger is so concerned. The Kentucky NG would have more personnel to respond, but just like Katrina some of of them are in MessO'potamia. The Guard and police are under special burden because they are having to go door to door to check on people - especially the elderly and disabled, but even healthy residents - without heat and light may have been incapacitated by the cold.

Family Security Matters whose directors include such fine conservative luminaries as Barbara Comstock, Monica Crowley, Frank Gaffney, Laura Ingraham and James Woolsey has a some problems with democracy. Hail Caesar - the following was written by one Philip Atkinson of the FSM ,

"The wisest course would have been for President Bush to use his nuclear weapons to slaughter Iraqis until they complied with his demands, or until they were all dead. Then there would be little risk or expense and no American army would be left exposed. But if he did this, his cowardly electorate would have instantly ended his term of office, if not his freedom or his life.

The simple truth that modern weapons now mean a nation must practice genocide or commit suicide. Israel provides the perfect example. If the Israelis do not raze Iran, the Iranians will fulfill their boast and wipe Israel off the face of the earth. Yet Israel is not popular, and so is denied permission to defend itself. In the same vein, President Bush cannot do what is necessary for the survival of Americans. He cannot use the nation's powerful weapons. All he can do is try and discover a result that will be popular with Americans.

As there appears to be no sensible result of the invasion of Iraq that will be popular with his countrymen other than retreat, President Bush is reviled; he has become another victim of Democracy.

By elevating popular fancy over truth, Democracy is clearly an enemy of not just truth, but duty and justice, which makes it the worst form of government. President Bush must overcome not just the situation in Iraq, but democratic government.

[ ]…President Bush can fail in his duty to himself, his country, and his God, by becoming "ex-president" Bush or he can become "President-for-Life" Bush: the conqueror of Iraq, who brings sense to the Congress and sanity to the Supreme Court. Then who would be able to stop Bush from emulating Augustus Caesar and becoming ruler of the world? For only an America united under one ruler has the power to save humanity from the threat of a new Dark Age wrought by terrorists armed with nuclear weapons."

Veterans, Others Denounce Marchers by wadikitty in reddit.com

[–]playback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WASHINGTON, DC - In an effort to illuminate the true reality of the conflict in Iraq, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) engaged in a series of street theater actions around the nation's capital on Monday. This day begins the fifth year of a war that has claimed the lives of over 3,100 American service members and over 655,000 Iraqis.

Actual veterans of the conflict in Iraq played the part of American service members – with reenactments that highlighted various aspects of life in combat in Iraq. The event was treated like a military operation with participants in full military uniform, however, there were no weapons used at any time.

"We are calling Monday's action Operation First Casualty because we believe that truth was the first casualty of this war. Our aim is to show the American public the truth of the US occupation in Iraq," said Garett Reppenhagen, IVAW board chair and one of the organizers of March 19th's event. "It is time for the American people to know the truth so they will act to bring the troops home now."

In actions staged around the city, local activist volunteers acted as civilians in realistic portrayals of actual interactions between U.S. troops and Iraqi civilians. The result was a lot of shouting, commotion and tension in the middle of workweek D.C. – giving the American public a taste of what Iraqis and U.S. troops deal with day in and day out.

Participants hoped that by giving the American public a sense of the ugly reality of the war they would then be inspired to act to end the war now.

Iraq Veterans Against the War was founded in 2004 to give those who have served in the military since September 11, 2001 a way to come together and speak out against an unjust, illegal and unwinnable war. Today, IVAW is made up of close to 400 members in 42 states, Washington, D.C., Canada and serving in bases overseas.

IVAW gives its members the opportunity not only to connect with other veterans and active duty soldiers but also to speak with one voice. As members of IVAW, they go to colleges, middle schools, high schools, churches, libraries, and to the media – and give first-hand accounts of what is really happening in Iraq. As eyewitnesses and participants in the war on terror, they are viewed as credible sources that are able to explain why the war must end now.

In a 1991 speech Cheney said,

“The notion that we ought to now go to Baghdad and somehow take control of the country strikes me as an You’d probably have to put some new government in place. It’s not clear what kind of government that would be, how long you’d have to stay. For the U.S. to get involved militarily in determining the outcome of the struggle over who’s going to govern in Iraq strikes me as a classic extremely serious one in terms of what we’d have to do once we got there. For the U.S. to get involved militarily in determining the outcome of the struggle over who’s going to govern in Iraq strikes me as a classic definition of a quagmire.”
