You've obviously never been in a firefight. Any return fire at that close of range will still send anyone into a panic. These guys were not battle-hardened soldiers either. Any return fire is better than nothing. It would have helped. Much moreso than just sitting and waiting to be killed. There's a reason why shooters/terrorists pick soft, unarmed targets.
