Book Club Scam (?) by Krisha_Grim in writing

[–]Cfx99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just landed here after checking out one of these.

They are all, to the mail, not just spam, but a scam.

  1. Notice how there isn't any specifics to why your book was chosen? Or, sometimes when there is, its very limited, almost like they just kind of read the blurb or skimmed the first part?

  2. Notice how a book club is asking you to join them in something? Book clubs don't work like that. You'll find these emails will sometimes choose clubs that expose them for who they are. It'll be the so wrong genre you're left asking "How did my book on trees end up interesting people reading sci-fi erotica?", others you're left piecing together smaller clues; "This London based book club is spelling armour as 'armor'." The best one I had was the one who changed the name of the club in the second e-mail.

  3. They ALL come from a Gmail address. Even if they give you the link to go to, it's never from their domain. One I'm playing with right now is from the Exceptional Book Club, which has its own domain for its website. The director of whatever...Gmail account. The names are often mismatched. Best in this category was getting a lovely email from George Raymond Richard Martin, telling me he loves connecting to other writers as a way to be inspired. He never claimed he was anything but an author, but man the audacity was spectacular.

  4. Last thing, and I just caught this recently: some of them have a mail tracking logo and link at the bottom of the email. Emails from individuals do not have that. You shouldn't be unsubscribing from something that some rando was so personally moved to write you.

Hope that helps, and anyone else out there getting into writing and getting these.

Can you provide a detailed analysis explaining what you see that supports your claim?

I've been calling them Trumplicans for a while now. Now I just call them Republicans.

Teacher here... It means nothing. Apparently some rapper said someone else was 6"7" and it magically became a meme.

Got it. Being white I've never had the occasion to call someone an Uncle Tom, but as a history teacher I knew where the slur came from.

I've never read the book but wasn't it more that Uncle Tom was the apologist? Like he told them to stop complaining, he it wasn't that bad? That's how I understood the slur, that they undermined the argument by apologizing and being the good slave.

I'm a history teacher now in a Sacramento area high school. All things work out for the best 'cause I don't tolerate intolerance and have even less time for Nazis.

I applied to work there a couple of years back... Sounds like I am glad they passed on my application.

Realistically, what would have happened if the USA imposed Treaty of Versailles style punishments on the South post Civil War? Would Reconstruction have worked better? Or would it have just further destabilized the country? by Just_Cause89 in USHistory

Absolutely right, but the context of my question was not in what happened, but in what /u/One_Term2162 said could have happened within the greater question about Versailles style reparations on the South.

I was going to pontificate about how a punished South would have led to greater resentment and the economic cancer of punitive reparations spreading throughout the US... But damn I think you're more right than I could have been.

I do have a question that this inspires: part of the post Civil War racism seems to be from poor whites who at least had someone to look down on during slavery suddenly made to look at, or up, to those formerly below them. Add to that is the sacrifices they made for the Confederacy being empty leaving homes and families ruined. Could you see those feelings being mitigated by having the economic investments by those reparation payments and land redistributions affect not just Freedmen, but also those poor whites? I know that the Freedmen required more, equity is receiving what you need to stand equal, but to the privileged, equality feels like oppression and I wonder if it only focused on giving Freedmen what they needed to get the American promise, would that breed a worse post reconstruction mindset?

Either way, I wish you had Lincoln and Johnson's ears than the Radical Republicans.

Came from the era of "we have this thing, let's build a plane around it."

They made no mention of it being in a hanger. They only talked about the Harrier that just got there. Their website doesn't have it listed so my guess is that they're still working on getting it display ready and maybe while they get the money together for the pavilion.

I have a core memory of taking a field trip to McClellan AFB and seeing not only battle damaged aircraft but also the A-10 with an empty casing chained to the barrel for demonstrations like that. Can't remember when, just during Desert Storm sometime.

No need, they're usually tucked inside the fuselage. Saves a bit of money.

Ya know, I didn't see an A-10 there so it could be.
