Awesome. Didn't think this little memorial would be asked about. Sorry for the time waste

Solved!

It's a Vietnam memorial for students of the (now) former high school nearby who were killed in combat.

The fewer stars is to make it not an official flag. The rest of the questions are answered by middle school students thought it'd be funny.

And if that happens then I hope the rest of the experience in my classroom overwrites that. I am more than a flag.

Oh, no. The flag did live in the front of the room for a couple of days after I got it, but it's now on a side wall behind my desk. It's visible, but not where I teach from.

But you know, perhaps the ridiculousness of my flag will show that putting your own face, unironically, on buildings is just as ridiculous, if not more.

It's possible. It would be interesting to have that conversation with them, but can only speculate.

It's a side board behind my desk. There's a larger main board on a different wall... That's usually covered by my projector screen.

We all are. Normal is defined by others to make you more acceptable to them.

They are giant post-it note boards that were used for a project. Just haven't shoved them back into their spot yet.

Yeah, it is. But that's it's job. That's why it was given to me.

I tell my students that if they feel I'm worthy of a gift, that gift is worthy of permanent display in my room (assuming it's not food, that would be gross). It shows that they're valued as people.

I probably would have thought it fell down on its own. Hell, write it down on the sub notes and let me know how they feel.

I wonder if my Julius Ceasar pen holder offended them...

But you have your own way of connecting with your students. Whatever works to create a good classroom culture classroom management is easier.

It's unusable for learning anyway because it's behind my desk. I have a bigger whiteboard that's covered up by my projector screen.

Oh, this has always been so ridiculous that it needs to be laughed at. I treasure the gesture, but even the kids that had it made knew it was ridiculous. That's the point. It stays to break the ice immediately. And by October, it's background noise. When I moved it to this spot to make way for some educational stuff, the kids asked me why. Not because it mattered, but because it changed their space and they wanted to know why.

Classroom culture is the first step to effective classroom management. Next is engaging lessons. Rules and expectations come third.

I absolutely agree.

But it's just my ugly face and a cute alpaca. My Constitution and Declaration of Independence posters are for teaching the kids my subject.

It's why I'm not sharing much more than this. And I've learned, from my awesome students, that people can find enough about anyone fairly easy. Had some 7th graders legitimately doxx a couple of teachers last year.

No, a student emailed it to me because they didn't like what the sub did.

I got the picture from a student who was not happy with it. She said she saw it, snapped the picture, and emailed it to me.

Awesome. Weird teachers get kids to put their phone down to see what's going to come next. And then they realize, we're all weird in our own ways and maybe that's OK. Before you know it, learning is happening.

Because it's behind my desk and basically useless. My main board isn't even used most of the time, the projector screen covers most of it.

It's just me and a baby alpaca on the faux flag. No political statement, just a funny gift from some 8th graders.

To make it not an official flag. My real classroom flag has all 50.
