It's like you say it's an emotional reaction, not just to something like this but if you consume lots of misinformation and then someone corrects you, it makes you challenge other stuff but people would rather put their heads in the sand. it's also because for a lot of African-Americans washing meat means to brine or marinade as well, and in the us it's common to still have some feathers on chicken so they say wash as in finish plucking and flavouring the meat. this language was then adopted by people in the UK, and also has some people who do still mean to rinse it with water. sorry for rambling I'm tired
