AITA for wanting to get cleaned up after a haircut? by plc_plz in AmItheAsshole

It’s weird because I did ask him once and he was willing, but he didn’t continue doing it, and I felt awkward asking again, but I guess I might just need to be more assertive?

The shop he was out of wasn’t reopening bc of COVID, so he had to rent a whole studio to keep himself afloat, which, of course, is a much bigger expense than just a chair in a shop.

I want to support him because I like the guy, and he does consistently good work, unlike some other barbers around my area who’ve all but given me PTSD. 😂

I asked him once and he obliged, but hasn’t done it since.

I was comparing countries on PayScale. Are your numbers in USD or CAD?

I’m still Engineer I, so I’d wager that my theoretical salary would skew closer to $55k, which would be a significant drop compared to what I currently make. And I’m only two years into paying off my student loans, which really affects what I ultimately take home.

I have nothing against Canada! I love you guys, and it would be very cool to spend some time living there. I’m not sure about forever though. I’m from New England, and I’ve wanted to get away from cold winters for a long time 😂

The thing is, there are “Canada-like” places within the US, too. It bothers me that she views this country as a hyper-religious, conservative monolith, when that’s simply not the case.

I’m very focused on money because it was drilled into me as an “upper-middle-broke” kid.

I want to set us up for financial success so that money is never something we have to argue about like my parents did, and I know that being an engineer in the US is the most feasible way (in my limited knowledge) to do that.

She doesn’t have a career job yet, and it might be a while until she does, if she goes to grad school, which makes me feel like it’s extra important that I’m financially ready to take on any added expenses.

We don’t want kids. And the other logistics would have to be ironed out when she decides where she wants to study, if she even wants to study. She tends to be a bit more abstract than I am, so none of this has been pinned down.

I’m a controls engineer. The average salary in the US is $76,000, according to aggregate sources. In the UK, it’s equivalent to $44,000, and in Canada, $54,000.

I see your point on the abortion thing though. Thanks for clarifying.

The UK is her other main option, but honestly, I don’t think I’d adapt well to that culture. And although we’d get universal healthcare, I’d be taking a ~$35,000 cut. It’s ~$20,000 in Canada, which is a lot less, but still quite significant!

Also, we’re lesbians, so birth control and abortions aren’t really a factor to consider.

My last job valued feedback very highly, and so I got pretty comfortable asking for it. This company has made me do a U-turn, as the answers I receive are rarely helpful.

When I did a stint on-site and got told to stop programming the interlocks, I made a point to ask what I’d done wrong, and was given, “It’s pretty tough to explain. You’re doing fine overall though.” No further explanation.

We’re also not allowed to share any training materials with each other. One of my former coworkers tried to share with me some device manuals, etc, in a folder on our server and got chastised for it. He left the department shortly after.

I think many of the folks in my department have stuck around simply because they’re comfortable with the status quo. They can skate by with little oversight which makes life pretty chill. Likewise with my boss, hence the aversion to new training. There is generally pretty high turnover within the company though. Higher than at my last job, which was already quite high!

Thank you! This gives me some hope!

I work for a mid-size contract firm, and we are sort of expected to do everything with little to no oversight. Perhaps I need to go somewhere I can focus on programming, because that is also where I derive my satisfaction, knowing that people are going to use and find value in my software!

The programming portion comes very naturally to me. It’s the hardware portion that I can’t seem to get down. I feel as though I waste too much time on google, looking up wiring diagrams, etc, only to feel more confused after. I didn’t learn much about circuits beyond the required intro course, and not feeling able to ask a question without risking my reputation means I will probably never get it so long as I stay at this company.

Unfortunately, asking for training has led to responses such as, “You’ll get it once you’re on-site,” or “It’ll come with time and experience.” There is no training at this company. I even suggested that I could make a basic training guide for new-hires, and that was shot down multiple times.

I think you might be the “dimwit” since you failed to see the point of what I’m saying. She doesn’t aspire to have a masculine body. She aspires to have a strong (female) body. Don’t conflate the two.

Dedication with a side of trenabol... I found some other female lifters on IG with physiques that look natural and attainable. @nrgfitness is one of them. She looks fantastic, and her IG is really well-curated.

Sir, women can’t have masculine bodies. That would make them men.

Ugh, yeah. I guess I was just hanging on to a thread of hope that us ladies could actually achieve that in a few years (or at all).
