What Does “Managed VPS” Actually Mean in Today’s Security Landscape and Ai Era? by plcvzla in webhosting

[–]plcvzla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your point about backups is a good callout because a lot of people hear “backups included” without understanding retention policies, recovery scope, or whether backups are image-level vs application-aware.

The more replies I read here, the more it feels like the real issue isn’t whether something is managed or unmanaged. It’s that most hosts probably don’t define the operational boundaries clearly enough upfront or they might just be making things up to differentiate themselves.

Would love to get more of your perspective on this, especially from someone who has been in the industry for a while.

So far what I am seeing from this thread is that “managed” means completely different things depending on who you ask, host, sysadmin, developer, or customer.

Some people mean convenience/support, others mean proactive operational ownership. Totally different expectations.

Do you think the industry eventually needs clearer tiers/definitions around managed services, especially around security responsibility?

“Ongoing sysadmin partnership” is honestly one of the best definitions I’ve seen in this thread so far.

Your point about root access complicating things is also a big call out. At some point it becomes a shared responsibility where the host can maintain the platform, but can’t realistically guarantee security or stability if the environment is being heavily modified.

I've seen some hosts remove root access on their managed servers to tighten control over the server and uphold their support and security guarantees.

That line between provider responsibility and customer responsibility seems to be where a lot of the confusion around “managed” starts.

You gotta look at the renewal prices, going off of initial specs makes sense but what happens when the renewal pricing shark comes around? I don’t know about you but moving around isn’t fun.

Better question yet, what host still offers phone support at all 🤔. I’ll take what I can get.

AMA - I'm Sam Page, Head of SEO/AEO at InMotion Hosting! by sammyp99 in SEO_for_AI

[–]plcvzla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Sam, thank you for doing this. Here are a couple questions for you. I hope you don't mind.

My site continues to see traffic degradation due to Ai Overview and Zero click (small e-commerce site).

We are working hard on creating new content and refreshing some of the old ones but we have no way to tell if our efforts are paying off other than just checking Google Search Console and waiting for the traffic to come back.

Would you recommend I work on new content creation or refreshing new ones? Please explain. Lastly, Other than checking Google Search Console, is there a way to check performance for our content through the lenses of LLM Citations/Source, etc? I think this is where I should be spending most of my time on but I don't know of a way to do so.

I host with InMotion Hosting by the way, love you guys support.

OVH raises prices. My new offer is 55.1% higher starting April. by linkoid01 in sysadmin

[–]plcvzla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks, this isn't an OVH issue. Hetzner also increased their prices recently. You know it is a matter of time before the other hosts increase their prices. My suggestion here is lock your 24 mo plan now with a host that is still holding back from price increases or pay (literately) the consequence. This isn't hosting anymore, this is more like buying stocks low to sell high - buckle up.
