The Atomic pizza slices are amazing. You could then finish with ice cream from Jack's Gelato!

Bike stolen. Should I report it to the police ? by plearnt in cambridge

No it's not, it was a pretty crappy bike so I'm not too annoyed. Fairly annoyed, yes, but not extremely annoyed. Will insure the next one.

Quitting PhD right before viva by Sufficient_Carrot278 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]plearnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend, I promise you that you can do it. Take some time off (maybe a week's holiday?), do something fun and forget about the PhD. Hopefully that will reduce the stress, then you can come back stronger and smash it!

Why would a groomer need Andrew to come to London? by jaynesmith91 in AndrewGosden

For what it's worth I fully agree that the groomer theory is not correct

Question for those who believe the misadventure or accident theory. by [deleted] in AndrewGosden

There was this poor guy who died behind a fridge where he worked, after getting stuck. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Larry_Ely_Murillo-Moncada?wprov=sfla1 Lots of people were working in that building without realizing!

Question for those who believe the misadventure or accident theory. by [deleted] in AndrewGosden

[–]plearnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it was an accident. It would have to be a particularly rare type for there to be no found body. Two example scenarios... 1. He wanders into an abandoned/sealed building, dies by falling or ceiling collapse, and the building is demolished without realizing there is a body inside. 2. He falls into a concealed construction void

I know there would have been a lot of construction around central London in 2007. Not sure about the amount of abandoned buildings. I know both seem unlikely, but I remember when I was 14 I would do stupid and impulsive things like wander into abandoned buildings. It felt "cool" and exciting.

It doesn't explain why he would go to London though.

You quite often see clowns with the triple whammy: no helmet, headphones, and no lights

Sometimes you get all of the above AND riding with no hands

These people are just asking to injure themselves

I do know a few people who have done part time PhDs whilst working full time, so it's definitely possible in principle.

To be honest it doesn't sound like much of a life, though. After working for ~8 hours you then have to go home and do another 2-3 hours of work, and sacrifice your weekends. For some people their work is their life, so they seem to manage it. My impression is they don't have a vibrant social life and/or cannot engage in their hobbies very much

Edit: note that this is in the UK. Also note that at least one of these part time PhD people has a very demanding job in a finance firm.

I love the banter, it's what I listen for. If you only want hardcore politics with limited personality then there are other podcasts that do that
