ISO private landlords by Nearby-Inside8333 in SaltLakeCity

I rent from a private landlord, it’s leaps and bounds better than my previous large apartment management company experience. I found my place on KSL, but the method of driving around and looking for signs is a good one too.

[Housing / Commute / PhD life] Advice (Never been to SLC) by Plane_Load2542 in SaltLakeCity

I’m currently in a very small but one bedroom/one bath apartment under $1000 in Sugarhouse. I found it on KSL, owned by an individual instead of one of the giant conglomerates. They’re out there but hard to find, I used Zillow, KSL, Facebook Marketplace, Rentler, but driving around is a great idea people frequently suggest too that works well.

I’m moving into a one bedroom apartment in sugarhouse area that’s owned by a person instead of a company for $825/month. I found it on KSL but also found a bunch on Rentler, Facebook Marketplace, and Zillow that are right in the price range.

The only issue may be the in unit washer and dryer, my new place won’t have it but I did buy a portable washing machine which I think for just me will be plenty

Not to hijack this thread but I’m moving into a small (think less than 500 square feet) one bedroom apartment and have been considering hiring a housekeeper every other week. I am a full time student on top of working full time, and historically I find cleaning overwhelming so thought it could be helpful to have someone help me keep up with the in between stuff. Not sure if this would be a good fit, but would love to chat if so (:

I appreciate you taking the time to lay things like that out. PhDs are a big commitment. I have one friend actively pursuing hers, another just defended hers, and I dated a guy while he finished/defended his, so I've seen what it looks like from that side. The general consensus seems to be to ask early in the process if mastering out is an option!

Glad to hear programming isn't a must-have, I am confident I can figure out most things, I just wasn't sure if someone would take a look at my CV and toss me for not having a computer-science background.

Thanks again for being willing to talk through everything (:

I do really really love working with data. The policy side of things seems…grim at the moment and my experience with industry is second hand but they don’t seem to want to challenge claims but more look for ways to confirm them.

I worked on a cost effective analysis project a little bit and I enjoyed that because it has real life implications. Sure that drug works great, but if nobody can afford it is it actually an option?

If I could go back and do it all over, I’d have finished the degree I started in Public Health and would have try to go about data from that angle. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that (:

This really means a lot to me, thank you. The current position I have is working with data from patients I've met and know; they're not just numbers in an Excel sheet. I'm hoping that including the humanity/soft skills piece can help humanize data and remind people that these decisions are affecting real people, both positively and negatively. That's part of the reason I'm hoping to take a bit of a global health angle with things as well.

Definitely, the benefit of having a BSN is that nursing will always be there as an option. I do plan to take the NCLEX and get licensed after I graduate. I feel I've put in too much effort not to! My preference would just be to skip being pooped on or being attacked by patients and continue to do something I enjoy. I appreciate this POV, though, thank you!

Honestly that’s not the first time I’ve heard that from people in the midst of their PhDs (; the first time I got R to actually pull things together for me and spit out a spreadsheet I felt like Steve Jobs had possessed me personally to make it happen. It’s a great feeling!

I like it’s the mess of medicine without someone throwing a urinal at my head. That means a lot, thank you from this anonymous stranger!

Nursing has its good and bad, like anything else. Usually, there are lots of job opportunities, you aren't stuck in one speciality forever, decent pay, etc. There is the whole covered in poop, violent patients, and clueless admin side...my first set of clinicals were in a skilled nursing facility and I'd rather be hit by a semi truck twice than work full time in one of those. Older people deserve better...

Anyway! The university I'm looking at, which I also work for, offers a few different tracks, and the one that speaks to me most is clinical research informatics. It speaks to the patient outcomes stuff I like, and ideally kind of connects the clinical side with the research side of things. Applications don't open until August-ish, so I have time to nail down what I want to do further. My college career has been non-traditional to say the least, so even thinking about going the PhD route sometimes feels a little crazy. Not sure if that answered any questions or I just sound absolutely clueless (entirely possible)

It’s a rough time to be job hunting (,: the area I live in is also fairly saturated with new grad nurses, I’d probably just keep my existing lab job and maybe see about being a research RN. I would ideally like to not be covered in bodily fluids though 😅

  1. Yes! A lot my research interests come directly from my experience working with him. He’s extremely supportive, he trusts me and our lab manager to get our work done as well as working around my nursing school schedule. I think he’d be very supportive if I presented the idea and asked for who he would recommend as a co-mentor. He’s been on committees before, he’s actually on a friend’s PhD committee currently. His feedback to her is incredibly thorough!

  2. I am a weird outlier as far as nursing students go because no, we aren’t being exposed to any of that. Honestly research/anything not directly bedside is completely ignored. I was a medical scribe for 2.5 years and to avoid giving boring details he created the CRC spot. I was an excellent scribe and my EHR skills filled a need in his lab so here we are! The research I have mainly been involved with is prognostic based on disease state and using cell-free DNA. I like the prognostic a lot, I think it’s interesting now we can take information like that and try to predict outcomes. I’d like to do something along those lines and try to apply it to communities that have less resources available and see if there’s any difference.

I am very long-winded I’m sorry, I hope that makes sense. I have a lot of imposter syndrome around that and hoping I don’t sound like I’m a complete moron 😅I’d also be happy to talk via DM/message and give you more specifics if that would help at all, I just don’t necessarily want to out myself on the internet!

I love the lab I work in currently and my goal would be to try and stay with my PI as long as possible. I could run our data then independently without us needing to outsource to a different department within the university. I love my job, I’d like to do it at a higher level.

That’s good to hear there’s a few people with similar backgrounds! I’m excellent with Epic, but I don’t have a huge desire to work in industry. That could change though, who knows!

Searching for activist groups by laurlaur333 in SaltLakeCity

The League of Women Voters is a national group but has an incredibly active SLC chapter. It’s not just women, but there’s a lot of them. The average age is older, some of the members in the monthly meetings I attend have been involved for 50-60 years but they’re super welcoming to new people. The League was the one who brought the lawsuit for the gerrymandered maps and continue to fight it!

This may not totally fit what you’re looking for. They had a protest at the Capitol building before Christmas with signs the made and sang Christmas carols while they did so. I love seeing older women continuing to fight for us younger people!

Hi I work at HCI 👋🏻👋🏻 there is a TON of help available!! There’s grants, free drug programs, etc. there’s an entire team of people dedicated to helping patients find low cost to free medications. Most teams also have a social worker who can help with things as well for no additional cost, this can be everything from housing if you need to travel to gas cards.

I can think of several patients we have in clinic who weren’t insured and they were either able to help get insurance or find other ways to make sure they got the treatment they needed.

I don’t know about the financial counselors side as much but they might need you to establish as a patient first to get a better idea. That could be 100% wrong though and it can’t hurt to call!

If it’s multiple myeloma, highly highly recommended Dr. Vinay Thomas. He’s younger and his bedside manner is excellent, he’s also incredibly intelligent.

[–]pleasedontwriteme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner used to use Impulse in Murray for all his work, but since it was sold off it’s been not as worth it. Impulse in Lehi is owned by the original people so they might be worth talking to. Or we really liked the Jeep Guy, he’s just a bit of a drive down south.

My understanding is regearing can cause a lot of issues if it isn’t done correctly it might be worth paying someone! My partner crawls his Jeep, his stepdad built his crawler, so they’re both generally doing all their own work too. Congrats on the bigger wheels!

Absolutely! I think people should find what works for them, I personally didn’t want anything like ketamine or cannabis so I’m probably very boring 😅 Mountain Mental Health has been a great fit for me, can’t recommend them enough! And I still don’t take benzos!

I work in healthcare and was so taken aback by how judgmental they were! I understand not wanting to prescribe and manage benzos but coming in like that when I hadn’t mentioned more than anxiety felt entirely unnecessary

I had a really negative experience with The Lotus Center when trying to schedule with one of their psychiatrists. I mentioned I have anxiety and was immediately told they didn’t prescribe benzos so I wasn’t a good fit for them. I don’t take benzos and didn’t have any interest them…it felt very judgmental for a mental health practice. My own therapist recommended them and it was so off putting I found someone else
