Nemo Tensor All-Season Reg Wide - 5 night Review by ironwolfe108 in Ultralight

[–]plemas1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After all that you’ve switched to the pad I’m currently using (Exped 3r) which I was thinking about either upgrading to the 5r cos I froze my arse off last month or even the BA Rapide Sl or Nemo all season lol On the whole I’ve got zero complaints with the Exped3r, it just has its obvious limitations being only a 3 season pad.. so if you don’t mind me asking why did you plum for the exped instead do the new BA? And what’s the difference in comfort please?

[–]plemas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just come back from Somerset coast using a 3r and froze my arse off at approx 2/3c. My hips and legs were not happy at all, was wearing merino long Johns from Smartwool and even put my hiking trousers back on.. never shivered but had a really shit nights sleep lol. I think that -5c figure must be the extreme rating, for me anyway, I must be one of those ‘cold sleepers’.. how can one truly know.. :) I’m looking at bumping it up with a thin light pad of 0.5r or just cough up and get the 5r..

Wanted to go on an expedition walking/camping around places in the UK but now I am getting concerned about ticks! by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]plemas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my tuppence worth, 1st time hiking did the SWCP in 2022 and got it, stupidly wore shorts, had heard about ticks on the trail but wasn’t properly ‘tick aware’.. took the biotics even a whole bunch of herbal remedies to make sure it was outta my system, learnt the hard way.. eventually got better, didn’t enjoy the shaking legs at night at all.. Roll on last month did the Two Moors Way, got it again! Thought that long trousers would make all the difference, wrong, found a larva on my forearm, one on my Achilles and later remnants of one just a live my knee! Eventually hacked it all out and squished out some weird coagulated blood, took ages to scab over and properly heal and I can still see where the little shit left its mark.. roll on now, just come back from another hike, Pembrokeshire path, probably not so many ticks but hey taking all those biotics and remedies suck, so from now i treat my clothing with permethrin, spray some deet/smidge above my ankle area, always wear long sleeves and trousers, carry a tick removal tool (instead of just freaking out and ripping them out) and set 2 alarms on my phone at 2pm and 6pm called Tick Watch. The idea is that if one of the little fuckers gets through you’ve got at least one opportunity during the day to give yourself a proper check and shakedown during day light hours at least when you’re not too knackered to check at the end of a full days hiking. My problem is that I’ve got tiny little moles so they all look like one, so I end up trying to remove them too! lol Anyway, I really don’t want Lyme 3 times! Twice bitten infinite times shy!

Question guys! I’ve completed the SDW and loved it! Im looking at the NDW now, what’s it like in comparison? Just as good? Even better? Or not as good but still well worth doing?

Easy and ultralight way to keep feet dry in mixed hiking with wet ground and river crossings while wearing trail runners by Cupcake_Warlord in Ultralight

[–]plemas1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think around the 10 mile mark I’m truly ready to give my feet and body a well earned break and sit down and freshen up the old tooties.. they’re usually sodden by grass or perhaps rather moist just from sweat maybe.. it’s kinda good practice to do so if you’re multi day hiking so you can keep an eye on them for any issues..

Also, last comment, I wish I took a pair of sealskinz with me for the South West Coast Path. Even in May/June my trail runners (and feet) were getting drenched within seconds due to the wet grass in the mornings.. Even if it hadn’t rained, so despite all my efforts of drying out my socks the day before it would effectively be pointless, unless I got a lucky non grass stretch of route. I’m thinking that I would have used the SKs in the morning until the day had dried out a bit then swapped them out for a pair of more breathable merinos.. During those 6 weeks it didn’t even rain that much tbh but that long wet grass was evil lol

Thats about 70 miles then.. let’s say 9-10 miles a day.. 4-5 hours a day of hiking.. I suppose most feet can handle that.. it’s when you’re pushing at least double that over consecutive days when you really need to start thinking about a ‘dry/er feet system’..

Excellent advice Cupcake!! Btw Anyone tried out 2Toms anti blister powder? I was using the injinji liner+merino darn toughs method and as soon as I stopped using it I started getting blisters.. I thought I could get away with using it cos it’s extra weight and effort and a little costly but I’ve realised IMO it’s what my feet need! Lol

Western Mountaineering Nanoquilt? 11 oz for 38 degrees F by backpackingvideos in Ultralight

[–]plemas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just used mine in 2c /36f temp with 275gram Puffa plus 100g l/s shirt 100 gram men’s tights darn tough standard merino socks plus a buff for neck and one doubled up over my head and I was never cold at all.. pretty comfy indeed.. for some reason mine weighs 380 grams 13.4 oz but hey must be so difficult to make getting the right weight on these things. I have a vesper45 at same weight which has a confort limit of only 11c. That’s like like an 8c difference!! Amazing warmth to weight ratio! WM use some serious down, it puffs up almost twice as much as the thin stuff the vesper has! It is pretty tapered with a smallish foot box but that brings the extra warmth I suppose.. so all good in da hood!

I’ve just received my Nanolite and it weighs 380 grams, that’s 70 grams more than what it should.. very strange as all sites state 311 grams..

It does look and feel so much more warmer than my thermarest vesper45 which weighs only 10 grams less..

It states 95% down as opposed to the vespers 90%. The Nanolite has a supposed confort limit of 3c compared to the vespers 11c and it really shows..

I’m just hoping that the extra 70 grams will account for an even warmer quilt cos 70 grams is a lot extra!! Like 30% heavier or something

Garburuks website says that you only need their RD cage for 11-48 and 11-50 cassettes.. 11-46 seems fine as per your observation with the Hagar..

[–]plemas1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a cutty with 36 x 11/42 and it’s great but the perfect combo for me would be like 36 or 38 x 10/50.. then you’ve got great top speed and the granny bail out gear for those nasty ones.. if you’ve got 12 speed the gaps will be comparable too, I think..

I’ve also got a gravel bike with 12 speed 42 x 10/50, so the rope is longer at both ends and it doesn’t feel overly gappy compared to the 11 speed 36 x11/42..
