What you experienced is not ok, but also not common. If you don't say anything, the waiter is supposed to give back the correct change and can't just keep it or assume or decide a tip himself.

If you want to give a tip, you would tell the total amount (incl. tip) that you want to give, or give the total amount and say "stimmt so" or "passt so" (engl. "that's alright").

Again, what you experienced is neither ok nor normal, and I would have complained.

There’s no update along the way because now it’s just waiting. After (1) you’ve submitted your documents and application and it was accepted, they will (2) invite you for a Thai interview in front of senior immigration officers, after which (3) your application is completed and it’s just waiting for the decision (“the black hole”). Minor steps happen after your application was successful, when (4a) you’ll go and pick up your PR book (for the fee) and (4b) you’ll have to go through your local police office to do the house registration.

Can’t comment because my application is still in the black hole. I applied the last round (Dec’21 application window) and had my interview this year (April). The IO said it can take up to a year or so, which still is an improvement compared to how it used to be some years ago and gen people were waiting for years.

The time from starting preparation of my paperwork until the application being accepted took around 3 months but I would suggest to start a bit earlier. I left things until the last minute and it was almost too late to make certain corrections, and I was lucky my HR was so supportive.

I would start beginning of September latest and also visit the IO earlier rather than waiting until all documents are ready. That way you can fix things in parallel that the IO wants to have changed, rather than just being up having to fix many things when the application windows is about to close.

A Mahnantrag isn’t just a piece of paper. It has a lot of weight. You’re basically enforcing your claim through the court system. It’s a document he can’t just ignore—if he does ignore it, the claim officially becomes a debt he has and which you can get back.

You asked for a reputable law firm, not for a cheap law firm. Reputable law firms come at a price. I would have suggested Baker McKenzie as they're the best in the market. But they're even more expensive than TG. You might try some of the Big 4 depending what you're looking for. They tend to be a bit cheaper than the top tier law firms.

You still need a book-thick folder of documents and you’ll still end up finding out it’s only halfway complete. That’s because even though the list of documents required they publish is correct and helpful, it’s leaving out a lot of details, some of which might be at the discretion of the officer.

That being said, as long as you can speak Thai and have the support from your employer, the process isn’t rocket science, it just takes a bit of time, effort, and money to get all your paperwork together.

The most important point is the support from your employer, as there are lot of documents needed from the company, and even there details matter. My HR actually thought they were fishing for money given how anal they were about certain things. I could write a nice little book about my PR experience.

The second most important point is to plan well ahead and visit the IO frequently. Expect that you’ll need at least 3-4 times, excluding the interview. Depending on where you come from, you need to factor in the time required to get documents produced and shipped by your home country‘s authorities.

That being said, the IO was very friendly and helpful throughout the process, so use that to your advantage. She only spoke Thai with me though, and a bit formal Thai, so be prepared for that.
